Description:
1939. NAKAYAMA, Masataka. Kasuri Shunju. [26] pp., double-page title, illustrated with 24 pages of colour woodblock plates, each with two images, on double leaves folded accordion style (orihon). Folio, 300 x 220 mm., bound in publisher's silk over boards, in a new folding chitsu case. Kyoto: Uchida Bijutsu Shoshi, 1939. This is one volume of a multi-volume set of textile designs. This one on Kasuri, a traditional textile, which is the specialty of the Iyo region in Ehime Prefecture. The Japanese verb "kasuru" means to gently touch something, which is where the name "kasuri" comes from because the pattern in the fabric looks like it has been lightly touched. Kasuri is a craft that has an ancient and well-beloved tradition behind it in the Iyo region and there are many different varieties. Some wear to the boards, otherwise fine with plates clean and bright.

1823. NEILL, Patrick. Journal of a Horticultural Tour through some parts of Flanders, Holland, and the north of France, in the autumn of 1817. xvi, 574, [2] pp. Illustrated with 7 black & white engraved plates, two of which are fold-out plans, by W.H. Lizars after John Hay; 8 illustrations in text. 8vo., 229 x 142 mm, bound in original brown boards with paper label on spine. Uncut. Edinburgh: Bell & Bradfute, 1823. First Edition. Neill undertook his tour of the Continent with fellow Caledonian Horticultural Society members John Jay, Edinburgh planner, and James MacDonald, the chief gardener at Dalkeith Park to the Duke of Buccleuch. Their goal was to trade techniques and seeds with other horticulturalists in Northern Europe and to bring new fruits and vegetables back into Scotland. They traveled in areas under French control which had, until recently, been inaccessible to Britons. The Society wanted to establish an Experimental Garden upon their return where "the fruits… Read More

Description:
1939. NEURATH, Otto. Modern Man in the Making. 159, [1] pp., illustrated throughout with charts and diagrams. Small 4to, 265 x 205 mm, bound in publisher's blue cloth with title in silver on spine and front cover. New York: Knopf, 1939. In the 1920s, Neurath developed the "Museum of Society and Economy" as a means of conveying complicated social and economic facts. Together with the illustrator Gerd Arntz and with Marie Reidemeister, Neurath created "Isotype," a symbolic way of representing quantitative information via easily interpretable icons. Isotype was hugely influential, especially in the Soviet Union. It was much used as a design element, and is, in fact, still omnipresent. Modern Man in the Making is Neurath's magnum opus, and despite being a trade book, is notoriously hard to find. Spine faded, otherwise fine. See: Otto Neurath, The Language of the Global Polis.
