Description:
1968. PICASSO, Pablo. Le Cocu Magnifique. By Fernand Crommelynck. [3-10], 11-173, [5] pp. Illustrated with 7 etchings, 4 aquatints with etching, and 1 aquatint with drypoint and etching, all by Picasso. Oblong folio, loose as issued in the original vellum wrappers and morocco folding box, in a cloth folding box. Paris: Editions de l'Atelier Crommelynck, 1968. Picasso drew on his own vast repertory of myths to illustrate this play by Crommelynck, which tells the story of a man undone by jealousy. Picasso had a lifelong relationship with Crommelynck, and he had intended to illustrate the play for quite some time before this edition finally appeared (the play was first presented in 1920). Crommelynck's sons, who had opened a printing atelier in 1963, printed many of Picasso's later prints, and produced the present work. This is one of 150 copies signed by Picasso and Crommelynck, from a total edition of 200. A mint copy of this marvelous book. Goeppert 140.

Folio, 352 x 252 mm., bound in publisher's red cloth stamped in silver on the cover, preserved in a new matching cloth folding box. [Milan: Rizzoli & Co., 1935]. 1762. PANNI, Anton-Maria. Distinto Rapporto delle Dipinture che trovansi nelle Chiese della Città, e Sobborghi di Cremona. XXIV (i.e., 20), 214, [2] pp. 8vo, 171 x 120 mm., bound in contemporary carta rustica, sewing visible along spine. Cremona: Nella Stampa del Ricchini, 1762. First and only edition. Panni's book remains the ultimate artistic guide to the city of Cremona. The introduction focuses on the conservation of early paintings, and the text covers the major architectural monuments of the city and the artwork inside each cathedral, church and chapel. Anton-Maria Panni (1730-1790) was a painter and architect from Cremona who, in his Distinto Rapporto concentrates more on the interior decoration (especially paintings) than any other feature in the guide. He often supplies names of the painters, even if the picture is unsigned. His book is divided into five daily itineraries, walking throughout Cremona seeing sites and stopping for a viewing of all the paintings within…

1879. PARIS, Ministere de Travaux Publics. Album de statistique graphique. 1879, 1880, 1881, 1882, 1883, 1885, 1887, 1888, 1889, 1890-1891, 1892, 1893, 1895-1896. Each volume contains 12-26 colored plates of informational graphics, many folding. Folio, 330 x 255 mm., publisher's boards. Paris: Imprimerie Nationale, 1879-1896. These splendid volumes were published by the French statistical bureau between 1870 and 1897, and are very much in the style established by Charles Josph Minard. On the outside they appear drab and undistinguished, but on the inside they are alive with a profusion of dazzling coloured charts. They have been called "the finest specimens of French graphic art in the century" (H.G. Funkhuser). All of the volumes are rare, and the series remains largely unknown. Some wear to a couple of bindings, and a few inoffensive library stamps, but otherwise sound.

1828. PATTEN, Edmund. Gibraltar. Drawn on Stone by Hullmandel from the Original by Edmund Patten. Contemporary hand colouring. Oblong folio, 450 x 315mm, mounted on heavy grey paper. London, [1828]. The full title of this print is: "Gibraltar As seen from the Spanish Western Beech, a Mile and a half distant; the Rock's northern Front full in view, with the Embrasures for the Cannon marking the line of Excavations; side view of the Town on the N.W.slope; Devil's Tongue and King's Bastion Batteries; Coast of Africa in the distance, a Fleet passing through the Straights and a part at anchor in the Bay and different rigged vessels belonging to Gibraltar, and the Neutral Ground and sheds and tents on the Garrison side. Sketched 15th, Sep,1828." This is one of at least two views of Gilbraltar drawn by Patten, and they do not seem to have come from a book, but rather to have been issued as prints.

[4], 68, 26; 76; 74; 73, [3] pp., illustrated with 4 engraved added title-pages and 124 full page steel engraved plates. 4to, 275 x 214 mm., bound in publisher's elaborately decorated red cloth. Paris: Fisher, 1845. First edition in French, profusely illustrated with superb steel engravings after designs by Thomas Allom (1802-1872) executed by a number of master-engravers. The work also contains copies of Chinese drawings from Staunton's collection, executed by Captain Stoddard and others (reproduced in Alexander's The Costume of China, 1805). The study centers mainly on the south-east of China (Canton, Macao, Nanjing, Shanghai) although there are excellent images of Peking and Yehol. 1677. GARDENS DESIGNED BY LE NOTRE; FOUNTAINS BY LE BRUN AFTER AESOP; ENGRAVINGS BY SEBASTIEN LE CLERC PERRAULT, Charles. Labyrinte de Versailles. 34, [1], 79, [4] pp., with an engraved title-vignette (arms of France) and 41 full-page engravings by Sébastien Le Clerc. 8vo, 203 x 130 mm., bound in contemporary calf. Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1677. First Edition. "Only a few copies are known of the 1677 first edition; and even the 1679 second edition is an extremely rare book" (Harvard, Philip Hofer Bequest, no. 38). The suite provides a contemporary pictorial record of the fountains in the famed Aesop labyrinth garden at Versailles, which was designed and planted by Le Nôtre between 1668 and 1674. Referred to as the most delightful garden created for Louis XIV, the complex maze of hedges sequestered wondrous fountains with coloured bronze fountains designed by Charles Le Brun as inspired by Aesop's fables. Unfortunately, during the reign of Louis XVI the Labyrinthe…

2010. PETTIBON, Raymond. South of Heaven. By Jim Thompson, with an introduction by Arnold Hano. Illustrated with 44 duo-tone offset lithographs on red paper by the artist Raymond Pettibon. 4to, 309 x 220 mm., bound in publisher's red paper over black cloth. San Francisco: Arion Press, 2010. South of Heaven is based on the laying of a pipeline from an oil source in West Texas to Port Arthur on the Gulf in 1927. Hano writes in his introduction to the Arion edition, "so real in its depiction of the horrific working conditions, it takes its place among the finest proletarian novels of this country. What Upton Sinclair did to the meat-packing workers, Thompson does to oil pipeline workers. It has cold-blooded murder and cold-blooded deaths that are not criminal, at least not by the usual standards of jurisprudence. Men die on the pipeline. That is their fate, in a world indifferent to that fate." Pettibon illustrates this edition with forty-four drawings, printed on red…

Letterpress title-page, 2 pages list of householders, plus 24 double-spread engraved plates. Folio, 420 x 280 mm., bound in later tan half calf over marbled boards. Amsterdam: Bernardus Mourik, (1768). First edition of this rare and very important study of Amsterdam architecture, presenting detailed depictions of 1400 facades of homes and buildings along Amsterdam's major residential and business canals (the Heerengracht and Keizergracht). It is significant that the buildings are reproduced precisely as they appeared in the mid-eighteenth century. As the title indicates, this "Collection of all the houses and beautiful buildings along the Amsterdam canals" features etchings of the house fronts in a "mirrored" fashion. The buildings on the right bank of the "gracht" appear directly across from their respective building on…
