Description:
Durham, NC and New York: W. Duke, Sons & Co. Printed by Knapp & CO., NY. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good Plus. N.d., circa late 1880s. Oblong 8vo. (7 by 10 inches, 17 by 26 cm.) 22 pp., plus wraps, which also have chromolithographic imagery. Reproduction of three different series of cigarette cards issued by the Duke company, which was a pioneer in the mass production of cigarettes and the namesake of Duke University, among other things. Cigarette cards were a promotional tool of cigarette companies, and as an extra gift of sorts with the purchase of a box of cigarettes, an instant collectible. In the these three book renderings of the cards, the cards are artfully placed on the page with a backdrop of period arts and craft decoration that also incorporates, and accentuates, the theme of the particular collection of cards. Thus with the Yacht series, we have some sailing motives as well as more generic Morris-esque decoration. Slightly more elaborate, and also impressive, is the background… Read More

Description:
Innsbruck. Cloth. Paper pastedown on buckram. . Fine. Beautiful ethereal painting of Tyrolean boy rendered on material woven from actual cobweb. Exquisite, and scarce, with supposedly fewer than 100 paintings of this type (cobweb) paintings ever done. N.d., circa 1870s. The artwork is about 9 by 5 cm, in a frame, 13 by 10 cm and the outer folder is 15 by 12 cm. Also contained in the small folio is a sample of cobweb material. The painter, Franz Unterberger (1838-1902), was a well-known Austrian painter known for his traditional Tyrolean genre artwork. He retained local artisans to render his image on to the cobweb material.

Description:
London, New York and Bombay: Longmans, Green & Co., 1896. Hardcover. Good Plus/No Jacket. Oblong 11 By 9 Inches. 63 pp. Full color plate illustrations not quite every other page, with text illustrations interspersed in margins of comic verse. One of the best of the politically dubious relics of late nineteenth century children's literature. It is hard to say whether the infectious humor of the illustrations or of the fluent inspired doggerel, almost certainly emulated by the likes of Roald Dahl, is the bigger draw. Probably the rarest of the highly desirable Golliwogg series, this one taking our characters to Paris, Japan and Africa. This copy has considerable soilage on the boards, which are illustrated paper pasted onto the boards. Shelfwear along edges and corners. Original spine band survives, with some wear by tips and rubbing along gutters. Interior tight. Some scattered soilage to pages, but text and especially the illustrations remain attractive.

Description:
London: R. Ackermann, 1815. First Edition. Quarter Morocco. Fine. Folio-sized, measuring 13.5 by 10 inches, 34 by 25 cm. With 17 hand-colored plates of academic dress, which was then more nuanced by position and status. Included are doctor in divinity, doctor in in physic, doctor in law, doctor in music, master of arts, bachelor of arts, a nobleman, a gentleman commoner, a commoner, a student in civil law, a scholar, a proctor, a servitor, a collector, a vice chancellor, beadles and a verger. While the palette of costume is more muted and restrained than typifies other Ackermann costume collections of the time, the plates are both elegant and evocative of Regency style and ideals. The text and plates are clean. Modern brown calf over marbled boards. A hard to come by title in lovely condition.
