He saw what the "company store" plan was doing to the people - turning in their cotton crop just to balance their account and were left with nothing. He knew they needed jobs that paid cash so he raised $75,000 and the mill was built and people realized that working and living in mill houses was much better and receiving real money for their work. An inscription on the front endpapers as follows: "For Doctor Roger Barker from Bob and Kathleen Morehouse - as a small measure of great appreciation for his skills, understanding and human (human) kindkess" signed and dated July 8, 1986. The front flap of the dust jacket has a pencil underlining of the word "incestuous" with "not really" written in the margin. Dust jacket has slight tears, grey covers, all good+ condition..
