Spine panel soiled with a few small areas of cloth rubbed through near title. xxiv,454 pp., including subscription list (pp. xi-xvi), 9 illustrated plates (including 3 maps, most drawn by Schott, Hayes, or White, engraved by J. Moderate shelf wear, rubbed with exposure at corners and at several points along edges, with minor loss at spine extremities. Also some exposure along joints, with narrow strip of loss to cloth the length of the rear joint of Vol. I. Despite all this, firm bindings. 464,[2] + 467,[2] pp., illus. w/ engraved plates with guards, other illus. set into text, more than 300 engravings altogether. All plates intact; maps not present. Very scattered and very minor foxing to notably clean interiors in both volumes. First title (engraved) in each volume dated 1856; second title (text only) dated 1856, matching copyright date, thus 1st editions.
