1) The Atlantic Monthly, Volume XIV, A Magaazine of Literature, Art and Politics

Boston: Ticknor & Fields, 1864 This is a wonderfully packed volume of 6 issues of the atlantic monthy published during the civil war. Included as authors or authors written about were, thoreau, emerson, hawthorne, longfellow, harriet beech stowe, , holmes, among others. Longfellow's poems Concord., the bridge of cloud, divinia commedia are included. Some of the Civil War topics: Democracy and the secession war, finances of the revolution, regular and volunteer officers, the may campaign in virginia. Note this is the 1864 edition - and just to give you a time line: Longfellow lived from 1807 to 1882; Emerson 1803 to 1882, the civil War 1861 to1865; lincoln, 1817 to1865; thoreau 1817 to 1862 (Note his Maine Woods is reviewed in here); Nathaniel Hawthore died 5/19/1864. In addition to the volume I found a newspaper article that was used as a book mark in the book - and it relates to the November issue of the atlantic monthly being published and its table of contents with commentary and announces that in addition the publishers will be publishing a new magazine that will have in addition to the atlantic contributors -- additional authors - such as Miss Alcott, aunt fanny, Mrs. L.M. Child and the magazine will be called "Our Young Folks". On the back of the strip of newspaper sheet with this article - are remedies for various illnesses such as consumption, coughs, bronchitis, etc. This article is also included with the book. 7) Opening Ceremonies of the New York and Brooklyn Bridge - May 24, 1883

New York: The Brooklyn Eagle Job Printing Department, 1883 This is a unique book on the opening ceremonies for the brooklyn bridge. There is a great illustration of the bridge on the inside end page - covered with tissue paper. The recipient's names is embossed on the cover (Agnes ?. Robertson) - the only link I could find to an agnes robertson was to a famous British actress that appeared often in New york with many famous actors such as Fanny Kemble . Robertson's dates are 1833 to 1916 - which would fit in with this book of 1883. The cover of the book has gilt decorative borders and calligraphy type for the title and gilt around all edges. There is wear to the spine from opening and there is some separation of the book from the spine that is easily repairable. A great pice of history on the Bridge in a very nice looking book. 27) Reminiscences of the City of New York
Dawson, Henry B. And William J. David

New York, 1855 "The within pages, originally written for Valentine's Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York" have been brought together, and fifty copies printed for the use of friends of the writers.". This is what is written on the back of the title page. This is copy numbered 10. The unique aspect of this book is that one of the authors, Henry B. Dawson, signed that page and numbered the edition - plus on the facing page he wrote "The New Jersey Historical Society with the respects of Henry B. Dawson" - in beautiful 19th century script. Dawson was according to my research on the internet an immigrant from England who fell in love with american histroy. He became a newspaper editor and journalist but was known in the end as an historian. He wrote Battles of the United States by Sea and Land and an edition of the Federalist creating a controversy with James A. Hamilton and John Jay. He went against the romantic notion of history and crusaded for the truth. A park in the bronx, New York was named after him along with a street. Dawson Park is bordered by Dawson Street. The book as noted is a collection of articles from the Valentine Manuals. This book was rebound with new boards and has a leather spine with the title embossed and the name Dawson in raised leather. The binding is in as new condition. the interior articles (this book has no illustrations or plates) are in fine condition - the title page has a tear at the bottom spine but is not detached.
