AVATARS AND ANTIHEROES: A GUIDE TO CONTEMPORARY CHINESE ARTISTS
Kodansha International, 2008. Brand new Brand new. Save 20%. 176 pp. Approx. 7.75 x 10in. 27 oz.
Showcases forty of the latest and most relevant contemporary artists from China. Featuring stunning full-color plates of the work of leading painters, photographers, sculptors, performance artists, video artists, and even a fireworks artist, this book gives a fascinating insight into modern Chinese society and its vibrant contemporary art scene.
Chinese contemporary art is currently enjoying a worldwide boom, fetching record-breaking prices at auction houses around the globe. China's rapid transition from communism to consumerism, and the dizzying changes brought by urbanization, globalization, and new technologies have created a fascinating explosion of contemporary art overwhelmingly concerned with the search for self-identity in a society that, from Confucius to Mao, has traditionally disregarded individualism for the collective good.
Avatars and Antiheroes reflects the schizophrenic undercurrents of a nation in continuous fast-forward. From the Cynical Realism and Political Pop movements associated with the post-Tiananmen generation of artists such as Yue Minjun whose grinning representations of himself as antihero seem to mock the revolutionary heroes of old, to the pop-culture generation spearheaded by Cao Fei whose digital avatars live in a world without borders, this book showcases the work of the most important contemporary artists to emerge from China in recent years. more information

STYLE IN THE ARTS OF CHINA

Universe Books, 1975. VG+/VG+ Crisp, clean, tight. Prev. owner's name inside front endpaper. 126 pp. plus 146 plates. Approx. 6 x 8.5in. 22 oz.
William Watson discards the customary historical approach to Chinese art which divides the subject by dynasties or by the categories of the fine arts as they are understood in the West, a method that has tended to obscure the basic analogies in Chinese and Western art. Instead, he groups the categories of artistic invention, period taste, archaism, and psychological quality under the broad headings of hieratic, realistic and decorative. He traces these three major aspects of Chinese style separately from early to recent times, looking for corresponding manifestations in both najor and minor arts: painting, sculpture, pottery, jade, porcelain, and textiles.
But Professor Watson does not neglect historical sequence. His first chapter, on hieratic styles, describes a stylistic cycle which, as primary expression, extends from the 15th. to the 1st. century B.C. The realism discussed in the second chapter is present insignificant degree only in much later periods. The chapter on <decorative stylestouches upon early art but is largely concerned with the last thousand years, when a conscious separation of the decorative from the expressive was particulary characteristic. more information
