1) Queer Eye for the Straight Guy: The Fab 5's Guide to Looking Better, Cooking Better, Dressing Better, Behaving Better, and Living Better
Allen, Ted; Douglas, Kyan; Filicia, Thom; Rodriguez, Jai; Kressley, Carson

Queer Eye for the Straight Guy: The Fab 5's Guide to Looking Better, Cooking Better, Dressing Better, Behaving Better, and Living Better
Westminster, Maryland, U.S.A.: Random House, 2004. From Publishers Weekly: - Complete with sound effects, techno music and an amusing glossary-which defines the Fab Five as "stylish and savvy saviors of straightness"-this audio package possesses all the vibrancy and humor of an episode, as well as some sound advice. In the longest but most useful section, Allen covers everything from the "10 culinary weapons every man should own" (eight-inch chef's knife, 12-inch tongs, etc.) to simple cocktail recipes and dinner menus that are sure to make a date swoon. Listeners should keep a notepad and pen handy for this section, as well as for Kressley's contribution on the dos and don'ts of couture: "Pleated pants are never the answer," but cowboy boots are a closet essential. Douglas's section feels thin at times, but listeners will perk up when he stops talking about unsightly "nose-bush" and moves on to skin care. Filicia, meanwhile, tells people how to spruce up a space by applying "paint-on architecture," and Rodriguez reveals where all the women are hiding and how to impress them ("make it cultural" by going to a play, museum or lecture). The Fab Five succeed in keeping the tone of their readings conversational, and "hip tips" and "straightguy" questions, which are posed in comically exaggerated straight guy voices, lend the audiobook an interactive feel.. 3) Antibodies: The X Files
Anderson, Kevin J

Harper Audio, 1997. When a disease-ravaged body is found in the smoldering ruins of the federally-funded DyMar genetic research laboratory, Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully fear that a deadly, man-made plague is on the loose. As the FBI agents investigating the"X-Files"--cases the Bureau has deemed unsolvable--Mulder and Scully pursue the truth wherever it leads, even into the labyrinthine corridors of the FBI . . . and beyond. Racing to contain the lethal virus before it can spread, Mulder and Scully make a chilling discovery. Before his death, Dr. David Kennessy, a hotshot cancer researcher at DyMar, had been experimenting with a promising but highly dangerous technology: microscopic bio-machines that can cure any disease, heal any wound. In theory this research could be a miracle cure, perhaps even a doorway to immortality. It was also the only way Dr. Kennesssy could save his leukemia-stricken son. But when a second corpse turns up, savagely mutilated from within, it's anything but theoretical. Could machines created to cure have learned to kill? Scrambling for answers, Mulder and Scully are opposed at every turn by faceless enemies with all the resources of the government--and perhaps of their own agency--at their command. Enemies who will stop at nothing to ensure that the secret of immortality falls into the right hands--their hands. As sinister forces close in, Scully fights to save the life of an innocent boy, while Mulder comes face to face with a crazed and desperate man. A man whose slightest touch brings agonizing death--and perhaps a resurrection more horrible still.. Brand New-Still Shrink Wrapped/Rem Mark. Abridged Audio Cassette Book. As New. 6) Big Trouble
Barry, Dave; Hill, Dick

Big Trouble
Grand Haven, Michigan, U.S.A.: Brilliance Audio, 2002. Dave Barry makes his fiction debut with a ferociously funny novel of love and mayhem in south Florida. In his career, Dave Barry has done just about everything--written bestselling nonfiction, won a Pulitzer Prize, seen his life turned into a television series. And now, at last, he has joined the long list of literary figures from Jane Austen to Tolstoy who have made the transition from humor columnist to novelist...and done it with a style and inventiveness that establishes that, yes, he is very good at that, too. In the city of Coconut Grove, Florida, these things happen: A struggling adman named Eliot Arnold drives home from a meeting with the Client From Hell. His teenage son, Matt, fills a Squirtmaster 9000 for his turn at a high school game called Killer. Matt's intended victim, Jenny Herk, sits down in front of the TV with her mom for what she hopes will be a peaceful evening for once. Jenny's alcoholic and secretly embezzling stepfather, Arthur, emerges from the maid's room, angry at being rebuffed. Henry and Leonard, two hit men from New Jersey, pull up to the Herks' house for a real game of Killer, Arthur's embezzlement apparently not having been quite so secret to his employers after all. And a homeless man named Puggy settles down for the night in a treehouse just inside the Herks' yard.. ISBN: 158788836x. New in Shrink Wrap. Unabridged Audio Cassette Book. New. more information

8) Lion Eyes
Berlinski, Claire

Lion Eyes
Brilliance Audio, 2006. Book Description - Of Claire Berlinski's marvelous debut novel, Loose Lips - a perfect blend of satire, romance, and suspense featuring a young female CIA operative - book critic Frank Bascombe observed: - It's more than a little obvious that [protagonist] Selena Keller is Claire Berlinski.- Despite her assertions to the contrary, Berlinski isn't above poking fun at that notion. In Lion Eyes, a fictional Claire - the author of a novel about love among young CIA trainees - is unsuccessfully dodging a deadly Paris heat wave and her even deadlier ex-boyfriend. When she receives an e-mail from an Iranian admirer who wonders how to obtain a copy of Loose Lips in his native city of Esfahan, Claire wastes no time in replying. Her correspondence with the mysterious stranger, Arsalan - whose name means "the Lion" in Persian - quickly becomes personal, then intimate - then obsessive. As Claire heads to Istanbul to find relief from the heat, her electronic flirtation with Arsalan begins, inevitably, to consume her. The boundary between reality and imagination blurs and then disappears. The Lion, meanwhile, is nurturing his own powerful fantasies about the author. To satisfy their growing passion, they agree to meet, back in Paris, but Claire soon learns that someone is secretly intercepting their communications. From Booklist - Reality and fiction mesh gracefully in this inventive follow-up to Berlinski's first novel, Loose Lips (2003). A fictional Claire Berlinski is the heroine of this tale, living in Paris after the publication of Loose Lips. When she gets an e-mail from a man named Arsalan who wants to order her book, she impulsively sends him a copy. They begin to correspond, and Claire finds the more she learns about Arsalan, a Persian archaeologist dedicated to preserving ancient artifacts in the Middle East, the more she's drawn to him. On a whim, she swaps apartments for several months with one of Arsalan's colleagues and moves to the vibrant city of Istanbul. But when a new friend claims to be a CIA agent who has been following her correspondence with Arsalan and wants to get in touch with him, Claire realizes she might be in for some real-life intrigue. Colorful and filled with memorable characters, this adventure is well worth the journey. Kristine Huntley Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved. Born in California, she received her undergraduate degree in modern history and her doctorate in international relations from Balliol College at Oxford University. Skipping Christmas
New York: Random House Inc., 2002. Imagine a year without Christmas. No crowded malls, no corny office parties, no fruitcakes, no unwanted presents. That’s just what Luther and Nora Krank have in mind when they decide that, just this once, they’ll skip the holiday altogether. Theirs will be the only house on Hemlock Street without a rooftop Frosty; they won’t be hosting their annual Christmas Eve bash; they aren’t even going to have a tree. They won’t need one, because come December 25 they’re setting sail on a Caribbean cruise. But, as this weary couple is about to discover, skipping Christmas brings enormous consequences and isn’t half as easy as they’d imagined. Brilliance Audio, 2005. From AudioFile - In the initial installment in the Firstborn series, naïve Katy Hart answers a casting call for the female lead in movie star Dayne Matthews's new movie. She's uneasy about Hollywood and whether acting is God's will, but she pushes those thoughts aside to follow her dream. Sandra Burr depicts all the complexities of stardom that plague Dwane's life. Katy is contrasted as an innocent from the Midwest. Their mutual attraction is portrayed with sizzling heat and charm. Burr also excels in performing two minor characters, a schizophrenic who hears voices and a domineering stage mother. Rejoice
Brilliance Audio, 2006. FAITH-BASED FICTION: A Terrible Tragedy Brooke and Peter are struggling in their marriage when they are faced with the single worst moment ever. What was supposed to be a pool party for their two daughters and a handful of children ends in disaster. As three-year-old Hayley fights for her life, the Baxter family draws together, not even sure how to pray. A Shattered Life Peter is devastated by Hayley’s accident. Unable to see past his own guilt, he distances himself from Brooke and their girls and finds other ways to ease his pain. Illegal ways. Peter’s choices send him spiraling into a cavernous abyss that threatens to destroy not only his relationship with Brooke but his life. A Reason to Rejoice Against the backdrop of great pain and loss, a Baxter wedding takes place in New York City, a wedding that gives all of them a reason to smile again. Now, what will it take for Brooke and the Baxters to move forward, and how will the sudden loss of one special woman change them all? From AudioFile Sandra Burr gives credence to this horrific family drama about a child's near-drowning and subsequent brain damage. She reads the women's roles melodramatically, stretching out the performance, especially when a sister reveals she's HIV positive. Alternating with the serious drama, and serving as comic relief, are scenes from the nursing home where one of the sisters works. This story has it all--comedy, drama, even romance. Burr does a splendid job weaving all the plot lines together with minimal confusion. Listeners will be drawn to this inspirational story. Des Plaines, Illinois, U.S.A.: Bantam Audio, 2000. Hailed as "astonishingly powerful" by The New York Times, and "written perfectly" by The Washington Post, Joe Klein's #1 bestseller, Primary Colors, was the most-talked-about political novel of the past century. Now acclaimed journalist and author Joe Klein returns with another brilliant and slyly subversive novel set in the gladiatorial arena he knows so well: politics in modern-day America. U.S. senator Charlie Martin is a hot political property, dashing, honorable, irreverent -- and a decorated Vietnam veteran. The Running Mate follows this brash hero on a wild, exhilarating ride through the minefields of politics as usual. But as Charlie quickly learns, combat is a cakewalk compared with the battles waged by free men in pursuit of glory and power. For Charlie's political star is beginning to wane ... a bid for the presidency ends in failure ... a young campaign volunteer's father decks him -- in front of the cameras ... a well-kept secret from Charlie's Vietnam days is revealed ... and a woman has entered his life -- one who loves him but is appalled by his life's work. Suddenly Charlie must confront the two greatest challenges of his life -- a political opponent who has no scruples and a dazzling, unconventional woman who may force him to choose between love and politics. Krakauer, Jon

Into Thin Air
Bantam Books-Audio, 1997. Into Thin Air is a riveting first-hand account of a catastrophic expedition up Mount Everest. In March 1996, Outside magazine sent veteran journalist and seasoned climber Jon Krakauer on an expedition led by celebrated Everest guide Rob Hall. Despite the expertise of Hall and the other leaders, by the end of summit day eight people were dead. Krakauer's book is at once the story of the ill-fated adventure and an analysis of the factors leading up to its tragic end. Written within months of the events it chronicles, Into Thin Air clearly evokes the majestic Everest landscape. As the journey up the mountain progresses, Krakauer puts it in context by recalling the triumphs and perils of other Everest trips throughout history. The author's own anguish over what happened on the mountain is palpable as he leads readers to ponder timeless questions.. Very Gently used/almost Perfect . Abridged Audio Cassette Book. As New. Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber: The Katya Livingston Chronicle
Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.: Audio Renaissance, 2002. 4 Cassettes - Read by Josephine Bailey - After weasel-eyed tax inspectors question her work-related claims, Katya Livingston is forced to keep a financial diary. As well as documenting the cruel and parsimonious ways of her ad agency boss, plus her harrowing business trips around the globe, Katya waxes lyrical about the price she has to pay for putting up with loser friends, mortal enemies, and thoroughly bad restaurants. She also throws in a completely candid account of her rich and varied love life, just in case some of it is tax deductible. What begins as a private account of expenses rapidly becomes, through Katya's chronic delusions of grandeur, a matter of public record: first as a tawdry gossip column, then as a salacious book, and finally as a Hollywood B-movie. Bitingly written with wit and style reminiscent of Candace Bushnell, Adèle Lang's novel is a cutting, bitchy, hilarious take on the young-single-British-woman genre.. ISBN: 155927817x. Cities of the Plain
Westminster, Maryland, U.S.A.: Random House, 1998. 2 cassettes / 3 hours Read by Brad Pitt - In the fall of 1952, John Grady Cole and Billy Parham--nine years apart in age, yet with a kinship greater than perhaps they know--are cowboys on a New Mexico ranch encroached upon from the north, at Alamogordo, by the military. To the south, always on the horizon are the mountains of Mexico, looming over El Paso, Ciudad Juárez and all the cities of the plain. Bound by nature to horses and cattle and range, these two discover that ranchlife domesticity is compromised, for them and the men they work with, by a geometry of loss afflicting old and young alike, those who have survived it and anyone about to try. And what draws one of them across the border again and again, what would bind "those disparate but fragile worlds," is a girl seized by ill fortune, and a love as dangerous as it is inevitable.. Reaper
Harper Audio, 1997. Description: -The techno-thriller genre's newest star, whom People magazine likened to Michael Chrichton himself, unleashes in Reaper the ultimate techno-killer a biological virus that's spread electronically. In Boston, nine lawyers ona conference call suddenly convulse with pain, turn chalk white and die. In Vermont, a young woman watching her favorite sitcom meets the same grisly fate, as does a group of sewer workers in Washington, D.C. Whatever has killed these people is spreading fast and the task of eradicating it falls to young virologist Samantha Craig and paramedic Nick Barnes, whose brilliant surgical career was ruined by a crippling hand injury. When Nick and Samantha discover that the virus, named Reaper, is spread through TVs and PCs, they realize that the information superhighway will become a killing field, with tens of millions dead, unless they can root Reaper out. Their search employs a dazzling array of real-life wizardry, from Mylar body paint to Stealth helicopters to CIA-bred swarms of insects. At the core of Reaper's madness, they find a suavely megalomaniacal, up-from-the-slums, high-tech billionaire; and a high-powered cabal that will do anything to save the world from technology, even if that means annihilating the world.. 49) Eat Cake
Ray, Jeanne

Brilliance Audio, 2004. Ruth loves to bake cakes. When she is alone, she dreams up variations on recipes. When she meditates, she imagines herself in the warm, comforting center of a gigantic bundt cake. If there is a crisis, she bakes a cake; if there is a reason to celebrate, she bakes a cake. Ruth sees it as an outward manifestation of an inner need to nurture her family - which is a good thing, because all of a sudden that family is rapidly expanding. First, her mother moves in after robbers kick in her front door in broad daylight. Then Ruth’s father, a lounge singer, who she’s seen only occasionally throughout her life, shatters both wrists and, having nowhere else to go, moves in, too. Her mother and father just happen to hate each other with a deep and poisonous emotion reserved only for life-long enemies. Oh, yes indeed! Add to this mix two teenagers, a gainfully employed husband who is suddenly without a job, and a physical therapist with the instincts of a Cheryl Richardson and you’ve got a delightful and amusing concoction that comes with its own delicious icing.. 50) Spook : Science Tackles the Afterlife
Roach, Mary

Spook : Science Tackles the Afterlife
Brilliance Audio, 2005. Read by Bernadette Quigley. From Publishers Weekly - Starred Review. Roach made an exceptional debut two years ago with Stiff—it might seem a hard act to follow. Yet she has done it again: after her study of what becomes of our mortal coil after death, she now presents an equally smart, quirky, hilarious look at whether there is a soul that survives our physical demise. Roach perfectly balances her skepticism and her boundless curiosity with a sincere desire to know. She ranges into the oddest nooks and crannies of both science and belief (and scientists who believe), regaling the reader with tales of Duncan Macdougall, a respected surgeon who weighed consumptives at their moment of death to see if the escaping soul could be measured in ounces, and of female mediums who, during séances, extruded a substance called ectoplasm from their private parts (she even examines a piece of alleged ectoplasm archived at Cambridge University). She goes to school to learn to be a medium, subjects her brain to electromagnetic waves to see if they induce the experience of seeing ghosts and joins a group trying to record sounds made by the spirits of the Donner party. The text is littered with footnotes: tangential but delicious tidbits that Roach clearly couldn't bear to leave out. She is an original who can enliven any subject with wit, keen reporting and a sly intelligence. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved..
