MOUNT HOOD RAILROAD COMPANY: 1928 Cancelled Check
Hood River Orgon, 1928. Mount Hood Railroad Company: July 1928. Issued at Baker, Oregon by J.W. Pentney, auditor, in the amount of $11.20 to F.M. Shurtliff (Hood River, Oregon) and endorsed by hand by F.M. Shurtliff. Punched cancellation, not affecting signatures. Crisp, clean condition. The Mount Hood Railway Company was established in 1906 to transport men and materials to the logging camps and mills of the Upper Hood River Valley (Oregon) and to transport lumber back down. Eventually area fruit growers also came to depend on the line, and it was a popular means of transportation for locals and tourists. Because three miles of the route is on steep a steep grade the locomotive had to push the train in reverse to negotiate the incline, giving rise to the nickname "The Backwards Railroad." The train, the line, and the 1911 depot have been restored and rides are once again a tourist attraction. EPHEM 2456. Very Good Condition.. Ephemera. more information

THE STRUCTURE OF TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD RATES
Berkeley & Los Angeles: University of California Press, 1947. Red cloth hardcover with stamped gold titles, in a buff dust jacket printed in red and black. 165 pages with index, illustrated with numerous tables and maps and fold-out map of rate territories. This book compared freight rates in various parts of the country, with a specific interest in shipping costs of agricultural products from California to the East Coast, and the importation of manufactured goods to the West Coast - revealing disparities in rate costs. "A mile is a mile wherever one finds it, yet freight rates do not reflect the fact," states the jacket blurb. An interesting angle on West Coast economic development. The book is in very good condition with very light edgewear and a green crayon check mark on the rear paste-down. The jacket is pretty miserable, with numerous tears (many closed and supported from behind with archival book tape) and some chips missing at spine head and a couple of corners, some soil and discoloration. Encased in a plastic book jacket protector, however, it appears reasonably presentable.. Apparent First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Poor. How Oil is Used for Fuel on Locomotives: Supplement to the Science of Railways
New York & Chicago: World Railway Publishing Company, 1902. Green cloth hardcover with gilt stamped spine title. No dust jacket, presumably as issued. Copyright date includes 1901, 1902 . 48 + 3 [book ads] pages. Very nice woodcut illustrations plus page schematics plus two schematic foldouts. Schematic illustrations are for locomotive and tender on the Sante Fe. This book was written just as the move to convert to oil for fuel was being attempted. 'With the discovery of new sources of oil supply in America its availability as fuel on locomotives has become general in certain districts, and it is not unreasonable to suppose that further supplies will be found and the field for its use be correspondingly enlarged, so that the subject has become, and will be in the future, of great interest to those concerned with the motive power of our railroads.' A footnote adds, 'In the United States it is said that oil for locomotive fuel at $1.00 per barrel is an economical equivalent of coal at $4.oo per ton. At some points where oil is now obtainable at the price mentioned coal costs from $7.00 to $8.00 per ton.' This book is in very good condition with some wear at corner tips and spine ends, a small inoffensive pale spot on lower front cover corner, tiny nick on rear cover fore edge. Very clean internally and all plates and fold-outs are in excellent condition, faint storage odor. RR 3768. Edition Not Stated. Hard Cover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. The Life of George Stephenson and of His Son Robert Stephenson; comprising Also a History of the Invention and Introduction of the Railway Locomotive
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1868. Reddish-brown cloth hardcover with gilt stamped spine titles and locomotive design, blindstamped borders and Harper monogram on cover boards. xli + 501+4 [ads] pages. George Stephenson, known as the "Father of the Railroads," was born a colliery mechanic and was largely self-educated. Fascinated by the steam locomotive, he built the first autonomously-driven steam railway. His ingenuity solved problems with rail materials, traction, and a disputed invention of a safety miner's lamp. The rail gauge he developed is still in use. In 1823 his son, Robert, and Edward Pease joined with George Stephenson to form The Robert Stephenson & Company, which became the world's foremost builder of locomotives. Robert studied gold and silver mining in Columbia, South America, in 1824, and there he met and brought back to England Richard Trevithick, who is credited with building the first locomotive in 1804. This volume, an enlarge edition published 10 years after the first edition, contains a lengthy preface (pp iii-xxxv) that updates the progress in railroads from 1858 to 1868; and adds a lengthy (pp 48-94) biographical section on other early inventors, including Richard Trevithick. The Stephenson biographies run from pages 97-501. Full-page engraved portraits of Trevithick and both Stephensons, and many fine small wood engravings illustrate the text. CONDITION: Internally quite clean and tight, with small institutional blindstamp on frontis and title pages, faded ink presentation to John N. Mott (from ?? Hodges) dated 1869 on second free endpaper, spine ends a bit frayed, corner tips rubbed. RR 4754 . Later Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket (as issued).
