The Great Hanging at Gainesville, Cooke County, Texas October, A.D. 1862
Austin, Texas USA: The Texas State Historical Association, 1961 FIRST PAPERBACK PRINTING. (Civil) War Centennial reprint (1885) of this historic memoir, now scarce. Preface by H. Bailey Carroll. An insiders account of the mob hysteria after discovery of a plot by local Union sympathizers to stage a bloody uprising to re-establish the Constitution in part of North Texas, breaking off this part of secessionist Texas, thus keeping it in the Union. Much as part of Virginia split off and eventually became the seperate (pro-Union) state of West Virginia. Ensuing reign of terror led to the lynchings of dozens of citizens, many with little or only minor level of participation in the plot. Original Rare, only 3 copies known in 1961 as it was long fearful to own a copy in the area. Light blue matte finish wrappers in Good condition with yellowing of backstrip and edges; light soiling and dampspotting. Binding tight, spine straight.
