The role of value theory in Marx's work is to bring out the influence of the class struggle in capitalism on the economic relationships of exchange. Thus it is a necessary feature of the Marxian model that we have value equations and price equations as two separate systems. What is visible at the surface is the system of exchange relationships, and price equations describe this system. Underlying the exchange relationships are relations of production where the class division becomes manifest. Value equations describe these relations. A transformation from values to prices and vice versa is essential for understanding the reality of class division beneath the phenomenon of equality and free exchange under law.
