The Majic Bus: An American Odyssey Magic
Harcourt, 1993. Hardcover with DJ. First edition Near Fine with a couple of small bumps to the top boards in a Near Fine dj with very light shelf wear. The book has a slight curl to the front board. 513 pages; 16 pages of b&w photos; 7.5 x 9.5 inches. SIGNED BY BRINKLEY with a removable "Doubleday Book Shops Autographed" sticker to the cover. Professor Douglas Brinkley arranged to teach a six-week class aboard a fully equipped sleeper bus. The class would visit thirty states and ten national parks. They would read twelve books by great American writers. They would see gamble at a Vegas casino, dance to Bourbon Street jazz in New Orleans, pay homage to Presley's Graceland and Faulkner's Rowan Oak, and experience a California earthquake. Their journey took them to Jefferson's Monticello, Lincoln's Springfield, Truman's Independence, and Teddy Roosevelt's North Dakota badlands. And it allowed them to meet some of their cultural heroes, including William S. Burroughs and Ken Kesey. Driven by Doug Brinkley's energetic prose, The Majic Bus is a spirited travelogue of a unique experience. FREE SHIPPING within the US by Media Mail. Careful and secure packaging. more information

On the Road: The Original Scroll

Viking Adult, 2007. Hardcover with DJ. First edition, first printing. As New 416 pages; 6 x 9 inches. Kerouac began thinking about the novel that was to become On the Road in 1947. In April 1951, he wrote the first full draft that was satisfactory to him. It was typed out as one long, single-spaced paragraph on a 120-foot scroll. It was not until more than six years later, and several new drafts, that Viking published, in 1957, the novel known to us today. On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of On the Road, Viking published the 1951 scroll in a standard book format. The scroll version is slightly longer and has a heightened linguistic virtuosity and a more sexually frenetic tone. It also uses the real names of Kerouac's friends instead of the fictional names he later invented for them. The book includes four critical essays that explain the fascinating compositional and publication history of On the Road and anchors the text in its historical, political, and social context.
