39) Poster in black and white for his first museum exhibition at the Jewish Musuem, March 31 - May 8, 1963
Rauschenberg, Robert

New York: The Jewish Museum, 1963. A mint copy of Robert Rauschenberg's first poster for his first museum show. Mint. 81 x 56 cm. An offset lithograph by Universal Limited Art Edtions, West Islip, New York. In 1963 Rauschenberg produced his first poster for an exhibition in New York's Jewish Museum. The institution's fame and the honor associated with being the first contemporary artist to show a survey of his work there were reason enough to advertise the event with a specially- made poster. His lithograph RIVAL, produced for the exhibition, was reworked by dividing the image in the center to make way for the line of text and changing the color combination of brown and black. The artist's name, the exhibition venue and dates are composed of a collage of differently sized printed letters, other details ( address, opening times) are hand-written at the foot. Only the information at the bottom half of the picture is legible, where photographs of clouds, a bird and a tumbler can be seen. The playful collage of printed letters, inspired by Dadaism, is first seen in an announcement for an exhibition at Leo Castelli's New York Gallery in 1960. more information
