Amsterdam: Mulder & Zoon N. V. Not dated, illustrations indicate 1940's / 50's. Two double page pop-ups following a transport theme, one of a train station and the other of a port. Four other pages of text, all with background illustrations in quite strong colours. This was the first in a series of 'Multiplans' pop up books, of which I believe there were 8 in total. Not in Montanaro. Published in Holland with French text, although interestingly the ship on the front cover sports a Union Jack flag! Rule Britannia!! Overall in very good condition: very slight (couple of millimetres) bowing of boards, small surface abrasion to rear board, discrete previous owner's signature. England: Purnell n.d., c. late 1950s. Comprises four double page pop-up scenes that open out to form a 360 degrees panorama. There is one scene of the inside of a train station, another of a steam and electric diesel trains, one of a boat train at a port and one of a steam train at a signal box. It has stiff card pictorial covers and it is staple bound. The cover advises you to hold the book open with a paper clip once it is opened through 360 degrees. There was a 1 inch split at the bottom of one pop-up and one pop-up fold had split, both have been secured with archival tape and are minor observations noted for completeness and other than that all the pop up elements are complete with no mis-fold or tears.. London: Bancroft & Co. Ltd. n.d., c. late 1950s. Comprises four double page pop-up scenes that open out to form a 360 degrees panorama. The rooms are the kitchen, sitting / dining room, bathroom and bedroom. What makes it really interesting is that it presents a bit like a social museum - showing the decor and appliances from the 1950's. There is the washing machine with the mangle, the very small screen t.v., the pink bathroom suite and the eiderdown and potty in the bedroom! It has stiff card pictorial covers and it is spiral bound. The cover advises you to hold the book open with a paper clip once it is opened through 360 degrees. There is a short closed tear on the rear cover and the holes are split at the bottom four spirals on the rear. There is a closed tear (1 inch) on the fold on the bottom of one pop up (repaired with archival tape) - all of these are minor observations noted for completeness and other than that all the pop up elements are complete with no mis-fold or tears.. Paris: Rouge et or, 1988 Lovely children's christmas book that contains 6 circular transformation pictures. The pictures are rotated by a small ribbon to reveal a complementary picture or addition to the scene. On every page opposite each transformation there are 3 small window / flap pictures that are opened to reveal a hidden picture / scene. The story is in French. France: Hachette , 1949 Contains 5 movables with double and triple movement action. 24 pages. Spiral bound. Colour / black-white illustrations on all pages. French language. Movable actions: 1) Snow White is lost in forest and the tab moves her upper body and her head and scary eyes appear with in the surrounding tree trunks. 2) Snow White sweeping the kitchen - tab moves her body and sweeps brush she is holding as well as moving a helping rabbit holding a dust pan to move the dust pan to the brush and also moves a little chipmunk up and down in a tub. 3) Double page illustration with one of the pages having pop-up action - Snow White dances with two dwarfs when tab moves. All three characters articulated at the waist and one of the dwarfs lifts off the page in a 3D action. 4) Snow White in kitchen rolling pastry observed by chipmunks. Tab moves SW back and forth to roll the pastry and moves two of the animals. SW articulated at waist and arms. 5) Snow White in Prince Charmings arms surrounded by dwarfs. Tab moves SW and prince to kiss and wiggles two of the dwarfs. All very nice actions and a rare title. Specific condition: Top & bottom of spine bumped. First page come away from bottom four spirals. Bedford, Mass.: Applewood Books, 1993 This collector's edition of four pop-up books in a linen covered slip case, contains two books of each title (Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse). Each book contains three pop-ups. Originally published in 1933 by Blue Ribbon / Whitman Books, the original books contained coloured pop-ups and black and white illustrations on the remaining pages. The first volume of each title in this limited edition set is a true facsimile of this. In addition however, this set contains a second version of each title with the original black and white illustrations now appearing in full colour, as well as the colour pop-ups. There is a certificate of authenticity, detailing this as set number 1140 out of a run of 2500 copies. Each of the four books indicates first printing. The scenes inclued breaking a wild horse, what a cowboy does on his day off, a stampede, around the camp fire and also Christmas on the ranch. Nice pop-ups, on several levels, all based upon parallel folds. What is particularly unusual about this particular copy is that it comes with the original box. The text provides informative descriptions of animals from around the world, interspersed with stories related to animals. The Bookano books brought the pop-up into vogue between the 1930's to the 50's. They were published in many formats: as a series of yearly annuals, an ABC book, a counting book, stories about Jesus, an adventure building book and a series of rhymes. I think that it had been intended that this zoo book would be the first of a series of books about zoo animals, but I believe this to be the first and only one published. This edition was however also issued by Bookano under another title: 'Animal Life in Fact, Fancy and Fun', a copy of which I also have for sale. Condition: Superficial wear to paper cover over backstrip, small square on cover where the top surface of paper has rubbed off (see photo), corners worn and edges rubbed. Binding nice and tight. Interior: All pop-ups fine and in good working order. Slight browning to page edges - a very common 'feature' in these Bookano books due to the type of paper / card stock that was used.. This was to have been the first in a series of Andersen Bookano books, but to my knowledge no more were published. Specific condition: Binding: Minor rub to top / bottom edge of spine and bottom right corner (see photo). Personal inscription on front free end paper. Interior: Pop ups in perfect order and all pages clean and crisp. The rough art paper that was used in Bookano books often results in grubby marks and a softening of the texture of the pages. London: Strand Publications, 1935 5 double page full colour pop-ups. The first one, of a country cottage, has an image of a fairy reflected in a cellophane pane if you look through the front door. [Also in Bookano 17]. This feature is usually damaged or lost on most copies. The pictorial boards have a wrap around scene of a stage coach and a fox hunting scene. The differently illustrated front and rear end papers serve as double page colour illustrations for two of the stories. The pop-ups are cottage with fairy (as previously mentioned), Gulliver with Lilliputians, the Buffle-headed Muffin bird and monkey, a horse drawn coach and a Christmas Pudding with Santa and children. This is the 2nd of the Bookano Stories series, which were published annually from 1934 until 1950. Condition: Binding: Superficial wear to pictorial paper over the backstrip. Otherwise binding tight and very good. Interior: Very slight browning to a couple of pages (which seems to be standard on these Bookano books with this type of paper), all pop ups fine. London: Folding Books Limited, 1951 By the author of the Curious George books (Hans Augusto Rey) this volume contains 11 fold out pictures whereby the right hand side of the right page is folded out to reveal the pictorial answer to a question posed on the left page. The subject matter takes in scenes around the world (India, Africa, North Pole etc.) and a variety of transport means (ships, airplane, sleigh, elephant etc.). Very nicely presented. Curious George character (not named) appears in the Africa scene and Charlie Chaplin (not named) also appears. Spiral bound, 16 x 14 cm. Printed in Holland by L. van Leer and Co.
