The Lotus Lovers
Condition: Fine Condition |
St Paul Minnesota: Coffee House Press, 1985. Black silky cloth hardcover with silver stamped title, black endpapers, in a black dust jacket with silver title and lotus image. Printed in an edition limited to 1500 copies on heavy Strathmore paper. Pages unnumbered. Lovely evocative poetry, sometimes tinged with erotic overtones, sometimes filled with loneliness. Tzu Yeh was a geisha of the Fourth Century, Li Ch'ing-chao was born into the literati class of the 12th Century. Both were unusually adept poets in a culture and times when women were expected to be retiring. Hamill sums up the 'love poetry' aspect of these poems poignantly: 'We who inhabit a loveless, indeed friendless, civilization in perhaps the most loveless century of all have much to learn from these two women. Theirs is a grace not easily felt by a crude westerner poring over characters found in a dictionary. Yet we share with them the sadly certain knowledge of a crumbling epoch that reviles love poetry because it has been our way to harden our hearts, to endure rather than to feel, to trust the intellect at the heart's expense. In the heart's garden, Tzu Yeh and Li Ch'ing-chao loom large and tender like two ancient beautiful elms.' The book and jacket are both in fine condition, with a a tiny pressure mark in a few of the book pages. POETRY 3476. First Limited Edition. Hard Cover. Fine Condition/Fine Dust Jacket. Illus. by Hopeck, Phyllis (cover), Sam Hamill (figure drawings). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Poetry. more information
