Deed to One-half Interest in Pioneer Steam Sawmill and Properties, Placer County California 1860
Placer County California, 1860. Light blue paper, 17 x 14 inches, folded in offical manner to 8.5 x 3.5 inches. An indenture specifying the sale of one-half interest in the Pioneer Steam Sawmill, located on owl creek about two miles from Yankee Jim's [sic] and including about three hundred acres of land togeher with houses, stables, lumber, machinery. Dated July 13, 1860 and recorded in Placer County California. Party of the first part was H.C. Hollinshead, party of the second part was Samuel Todd, who purchased this one-half interest for the sum of $2420. This area was in Gold Rush country, one wonders what became of it. A Samuel Todd was elected Sheriff of Placer County in 1854, perhaps the same individual. The deed is in good condition with a small oily stain about 2 inches long along the left (folded) edge, and some charming ink marks on the back where the recorder apparently wiped or tested his pen point (they are clearly the imprint of a dip pen nib). Original manuscript letter 1844, re Austrian political situation, addressed to British M.P. from "An American":
1844. Seven hand written pages on two folded sheets, address on back of second sheet. Addressed to M. Milnes Esqr., M.P., House of Commons, 26 Pall Mall. The content of this letter describes the atrocities against the "nobility" that the "American" witnessed while living in Galacia, and the seething political unrest in Vienna. This was shortly before the revolution in 1846. He concludes, "But there are reforms, there is a revolution to come in Austria, & the man to lead that revolution is the present minister of finance, the Baron Kiebeck (sp?), a man taken from the people, & to aid him, men are training up in Austria
." He indicates that he is responding to a speech given by Milnes, and concludes, "I do not sign my name, because I am a humble individual, who for a long time have sought instruction & amusement, in looking at the World
." with a lot of high-handed rhetoric regarding the "high minded English feeling." The letter was posted from 1st Arundell ST., Patton Square, Haymarket, Tuesday Mng. 10th Aug 1844. Very Good condition, sheets are folded for mailing with remains of wax seal. EPHEMERA 4134. Original Document. Very Good Condition. 9 x 7.25 Inches, Folded. Ephemera. more information

Old Yankee Robinson's Great Modern Show Letterhead with Letter
1875. Very attractive letterhead with advertising for "Old Yankee" Robinson's Great Modern Show - which included a hippodrome with a Roman race track ("every kind of race ever thought of"), a "tip top" circus, a large elevated stage upon which performed a "troupe of roller skateists - both sexes." (woo woo!) All of this described at the top of the page, along with an attractive logo (the Earth surrounded by a chariot race, with show features printed on the globe) and the Robinson rebus. Along the side are printed additional features, including a velocipede carnival troupe, a ballet troupe of "Ladies and Misses," a "great cannon feat." Oddly enough among the enumerated features is, "More new, novel, beautiful and unique printing (all newly executed by the Evening Express Printing and Engraving Co;, Rochester, N.Y.,) than was ever done in any one season by any company." As an added addendum, the spiel states, "Now if all these Six Cardinal Features are complete and well done, Y.R. wants to know where nay 'Swindle' can come in." The letter itself is dated Terre Haute Indiana, April 9, 1875. The salutation is "Dear Pareints" [sic] and appears to be from "Nell" whose note is warm and reassuring about "plenty of hard "work she is experiencing in the circus. Very good condition with one tiny chip on the upper page edge, previously folded for mailing. EPHEMERA 5201. Original Document. Very Good Condition. Ephemera. more information

1928-29 prescription Record Book: California medical History
Seabright California This 5x12-inch book has brown card covers, reinforced brad and cloth spine binding with paper label, and card weight pages. 50 pages, with c. 6-10 doctor-issued prescriptions adhered to each page (in staggered format). Apparently these were filled by the Seabright Pharmacy (Seabright, California) since many of the Rx are written on their prescription pad. Those written on Dr. prescription pads are mostly from Santa Cruz, with some other locations thrown in (Dinuba and Watsonville are a couple that I noticed.) Dates are from 1928 and 1929. Prescriptions include a lot of things we don't see these days - from charcoal and cod liver oil to strychnine. This seems like an excellent resource for discovering which doctors were practicing at the time, what sorts of things they prescribed, who they prescribed them for, and the general health and range of illnesses of members of the community. (Patient names are on many of them) Toning to the card pages and some of the Rx, wear to the spine cloth edges, one dark spot on the front cover. EPEHMERA 5085. Good Condition. Scrapbook: Xth Olympics, crimes, disasters sports - news carrier's scrapbook of events primarily from 1932
Portland Oregon, 1932. This scrapbook was kept in a lined ledger book with heavy cardboard covers and cloth spine binding. The book measures 14 x 8 and is crammed with stuff, about 3 inches thick at the fore edge. The initial material is somewhat random and includes personal memorabilia of Edwin Culp (quite likely the author, later in life, of some historical books), including a telegram carrier contract. This young man apparently carried newspapers for the Portland Oregonian. There are a number of more extensive sections (a rather large collection of material on the 10th Olympics in Los Angeles, 1932, with neatly folded newspaper and photogravure sections from the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and the Oregonian). Other pages focus on sports - there are a number of articles on Jack Dempsey's fights. Also two telegrams - One is dated July 4, 1919, describing Dempsey's win over Jess Willard; another is dated Sept 23, 1926 - Dempsey's loss to Gene Tunney. (These might have been period reproductions - I can't tell, although they appear to be authentic.) Also sections on the Lindberg baby kidnapping, the 1932 Presidential race (think FDR), the death of Calvin Coolidge, and articles on football, , disasters, outstanding crimes and notorious criminals, etc. Many full-page spreads or sections, always neatly folded into the book. There are also a few loose clippings that didn't make it in (the pages have been used both sides, and they are not always chronological.) The compiler is quite likely Ed Culp, Author of "Early Oregon Days" and "Yesterday in Oregon," books that reflect a life-long interest in gathering and saving this type of information.
