The author "traces Utamaro's development as an artist, providing at the same time an approach to the Japanese way of life in the late eighteenth century, as well as to some of the problems of Japanese art generally."-publisher. A very light dampstain line intrudes the top inside edge a quarter-inch, or less, and 3 inches across. Adhesive at the top edge of tipped-in color plate VIII, page 65 oozed outside the plate and stuck to the black-and-white plate opposite causing spots of abrasion. The edge of color plate XVII is curled; light wear to the foot of the spine; jacket has a repaired tear, but is intact. Other plates are flat and bright; other parts of the book are clean and bright.
