6) The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, V1-5

Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2008. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM. The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, one of the earliest quarterly serial publications of this type, was first published by the Pennsylvania Historical Society in 1877. The first five volumes are reproduced here with fully-searchable text. The bulk of the material in each volume focuses on the colonial and Revolutionary War period. A number of journals and letters are reproduced including the diary of Robert Morton (Philadelphia, 1777), letters from Ephriam Douglass (Uniontown, 1780s), journal of William Black (1744), diary of the Moravian congregation (New York City, 1776), Spangenberg's notes of travel to Onondaga (1745), John Penn's journal of a visit to Reading, Harrisburg, Carlisle, and Lancaster (1788), various letters (Pennsylvania, 1691), journal of Miss Sarah Eve (Philadelphia, 1772 - 73), and travels through Berks County (1783). Not only do these entries provide background material and a sense of the flavor of the time, they frequently mention numerous individuals the writers interacted with in the course of the events they describe. For example, Spangenberg notes among other things on June 3rd, "A runner was sent after Andrew Sattelihu, who is hunting on the West Branch, to return at once, to go with us to Onondaga. Philip and Frederic Weiser returned home to-day, and took our letters to Michael Schaeffer for delivery. Visited John Hickman, an intelligent Indian, and also his neighbor Daniel, who formerly lived in Tulpehocken." Researchers may find a 1697/8 Welsh immigration list, or Records of Christ Church, Philadelphia. Burials, 1709 - 1760 of interest; however, it should be noted that the Christ Church burial entries are alphabetical and that the compiler had only reached the surname Palmer at the end of volume 5. Copies of addresses delivered on historical events such as the settlement of Germantown, the massacre of Paoli, the battle of Germantown, and 17th century Pennsylvania courts can add to a researchers understanding of these and other events. In addition to a magazine of history, this is also a magazine of biography. Each quarterly issue features a number of memoirs prepared for the Centennial Celebration of the Adoption of The Resolutions Respecting Independency, at Independence Hall, July 1, 1876, beginning with John Hancock and Patrick Henry, but including lesser known individuals as well. The typical memoir contains family information as well as commentary regarding the service of the individual. Family genealogies such as Jones Family of Bethlehem Township, The (Thomas) Wharton Family, Descendants of Dr. William Shippen or The Descendants of Joran Kyn, the Founder of Upland are also found in each volume. The items specifically noted above comprise only a small portion of the material in these five volumes each of which contains almost 500 pages of text. The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography was when it began and it continues to be today, as the Pennsylvania Historical Society website notes, an important resource for those interested in a scholarly approach to state and local history, industry, genealogy, culture, and related subjects. Originally published 1877-1881. The CD includes high-quality images of every page as originally published (not just a transcript) and is fully searchable using Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 5 or later recommended) on any Windows, Macintosh, or Unix computer. 10) The Indiana Gazetteer and Topographical Dictionary of the State of Indiana, 3rd Edition

Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2007. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM. Lost in Indiana? Tracking an ancestor's migration path can be extremely difficult-small villages and towns mentioned in family stories frequently no longer exist. Early published gazetteers can sometimes solve the problem. They can also provide some interesting facts about the area. Did you know there were 28 towns called Union in Indiana in 1850? There are two Auroras-the one on the Ohio River "recently" (1850) suffered from the ravages of cholera. Bartholomew County's population increased from 10,042 in 1840 to over 15,000 by 1848. In 1850 it had 10 tanneries, a distillery and six water-powered and 5 steam-powered flour mills. The soil contains limestone and over 200,000 barrels of corn were produced in 1849. Jennings County had 5 lawyers, 12 physicians, and 40 churches with three Presbyterian, two Catholic, 20 Baptist, 7 Reformers, 5 Methodist and 2 United Brethren preachers. These are just some of the facts you can learn while perusing he pages of this delightful volume. The first 150 pages provide a general description of the state and give a limited history. Emphasis is placed on politics, agricultural and manufacturing enterprises and education with over 20 pages focusing on colleges and universities. The bulk of the book, almost 300 pages is devoted to the description of cities, towns and counties. Some rate only a line or two while other descriptions cover one or two pages providing information on everything from the soil to the number of ministers. Whether you are searching for details about a town or county or just trying to determine where your ancestor lived in Indiana, you'll find this an extremely useful tool. Originally published in 1850. Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2007. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM. Published six years after the founding of the Illinois chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, this volume contains information on about four hundred members who were then active. To be a member, one had to be a lineal descendant of someone who had served loyally during the Revolution. The volume opens with lists of the officers of the Illinois society for each of its years of existence, along with the state constitution and bylaws, and a brief history of the Illinois society. This is followed by a list of the current officers of the national society, and the national constitution and bylaws. Each member entry contains the name, occupation and address of the member, and the date that he was admitted to the society. This is followed by a skeleton lineage from the member back to the qualifying ancestor (and sometimes a generation or two beyond that). Many members had submitted multiple lines of descent, to different qualifying ancestors, and each lineage is given. Finally, details of the qualifying service of the Revolutionary ancestor are included, with detailed documentation for this service. The volume concludes with an index to members and an index to the qualifying ancestors. Originally published in 1896. 16) Virginia Revolutionary Claims -- Bounty Land and Commutation Pay

Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2008. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM. Over fifty years after the end of the Revolution, claims were still being made to the federal government for commutation pay and bounty land for service in the Revolutionary War. On 24 April 1840 the Committee on Revolutionary Claims presented a report to the House of Representatives. This report provides a detailed history of various awards and the process followed in the awarding of claims for the service of officers in the Virginia Continental and State Line and navy. Record loss has made it difficult to reconstruct the service of many individuals who served in the war. Consequently, of most interest to researchers, will be the references to various lists of officers who served or were declared supernumerary during the war. The location (in 1840) of most of these lists is noted as well. In addition to a general discussion of the law and the process followed, the service and awards including the basis for the determination of the award and the validity of the award for over thirty officers of various ranks are detailed. The appendix contains a lists of individuals named in commutation acts passed since 4 June 1794 and a 2 September 1782 list of the officers of the Virginia line, “who have been killed, invalided, resigned, superseded, &c., since the Chesterfield arrangement, in February, 1781, and not included in a late arrangement at this place in May last.” Numerous charts in the appendix provide a variety of details including numbers of officers of various ranks broken down by regiment and acres of land awarded by year broken down by type of serviceContinental Line, State Line or Navy. Of special interest to family history researchers, this volume includes detailed biographical sketches of about 30 prominent citizens, as well as a list of more than 8000 individual patrons of the atlas from across the State, listing in each case his/her name, city of residence, business, birth place, and the date of immigration to (or birth in) Indiana. The guide also contains very useful tips on travelling once you have arrived as well as notes on the history of the country as well as brief notes on each individual state. The guide also included a copy of the American Constitution as well as general advice and observations on the people and notes on naturalization and citizenship. The guide concludes with an alphabetical list of the trans-Atlantic steamers and details of the pricing, ports of departure and arrival. This guide was an essential source for those emigrating to America. more information

23) Irish (Canada & USA) Song Books, Erin-go-Bragh & Faugh-A-Ballagh -C1873

Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2005. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM "When we were first offered this "old song book" we were uncertain if it would be suitable for our publications. We finally decided to ask Mary Yeatman Robinson, the book's current custodian, to loan it to us because we could not find any trace of it on any of our normal references for old and rare books. When it arrived and we'd had time to look at it a little harder it became clear that; first it was two separate song books bound together in one home made cover, and that there was no trace of either of them in any of our normal reference sources. (There are plenty of song books using the same names but none with these collections.) That, together with their rather advanced state of dilapidation, decided us that what was needed was a rescue mission, not just the normal "copy to make it more available." Only one of the two books still has a title page left and showed it had been published in New York in 1873. We think that the other book came from the same publishing house and is about the same age. Both books are full of anglicized versions of traditional Irish ballads, although the Faugh-a-Ballagh also includes "side splitting stories and anecdotes." Between them these two books contain over 100 ballads and stories, even allowing for the two or three that were already missing. We have made the titles searchable (but not the text.) If you are proud of your Irish heritage, or just enjoy traditional Irish songs, this is a collection which came close to disappearing forever." more information

24) List of Ex-Soldiers, Sailors and Marines Living in Iowa
Alexander, William L

Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2007. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM. Tracking migrating ancestors is often an exercise in frustration. One tool often used is tracking neighbors, an infrequently used, but often successful tool is tracking military service. This volume authorized by the Iowa General Assembly in 1884, lists U.S. Army, Navy and Marine Corps veterans of the War of 1812, the Black Hawk and Mexican wars, and the War of the Rebellion. Although directed to place individuals in alphabetical order, the editor chose to list those serving in the War of the Rebellion and the Mexican War, by the state and unit in which they enlisted and served and alphabetically thereunder. The state unit in which they served is noted for those with War of 1812 service. This allows the researcher not only to identify the state of origin of his ancestor or a collateral relative, but the names of other individuals who served with him. While almost 17,000 of the those listed were from Iowa, 3200 were from Ohio, 1600 from Pennsylvania, 1700 from New York and 14 were from Colorado. Information collected included, the rank, company, regiment, battery or vessel in which they served and the present residence. Occasional footnotes indicate instate moves between the date of information collection and publication. This book was published in 1886. The CD includes high-quality images of every page as originally published (not just a transcript) and is fully searchable using Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 5 or later recommended) on any Windows, Macintosh, or Unix computer. Austin, H. Russell

The Milwaukee Story: The Making of an American City
Milwaukee, WI: The Milwaukee Journal. 1946. S Stapled Spine. Very Good. Binding is secure. Pages are clean. Slight edgewear. Covers lightly soiled. "The romance, drama, colr and human interest of Milwaukee's past are equalled in few American cities. Yet as the city finished its first century this year, the whole absorbing epic remained untold in any form complete, accessible and readable enough to reach the great majority of Milwaukee's citizens. Realizing this, The Milwaukee Journal assigned H. Russell Austin of its staff to prepare a popular, yet complete and authentic narrative of the city's life, from prehistoric times to the present. This book resulted. In it are stirring episodes of Indian adventure, the struggles of early traders and settlers, the melodramatic Bridge War, the tragic Newhall house and great Third Ward fires, the tinsel glitter of the gay but corupt Rose era, the experiments of the first Socialist government of a major American city. The reader meets the Titans of Milwaukee from the Juneau, Kilhourn and Walker triumvirate through the Mitchelss, Plankintons, Laytons, and other builders of the middler period down to the figures of the present day. He meets also the smaller figures, corrupt and honest, humorous and pathetic, who added lavor to their times: The glib tongud swindler James K. O'Farrell; the fiery spellbinder, the Rev. James Cook Richmond; the deluded poet, Egbert Herring Smith; the pretentious 'madam' Kitty Williams, and the jocular hotel keeper, Abner Kirby." 27) Hudson Bay or Everyday Life in the Wilds of North America
Ballantyne, Robert Michael

Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2005. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM. Originally published in 1850, here is a narrative of first hand experience in the service of the Hudson Bay Company during the 1840s. This was the first book written by Robert Michael Ballantyne (1825 - 1894) although not his first experience at writing as he spent much of his free time in Canada writing down his adventures so his mother could read what an experience her son was having. It was not until the end of his period of employment that he decided to rewrite his experiences in book form. When published his book was so successful that he continued to write story books for boys for the rest of his life. This is the only one based on actual experience although he always researched the background to his stories carefully. Being written as much to entertain as to instruct, this book is easy to read and has the feel of a novel - even containing dialogue in some places. On the whole, we are told, it is a true account of the actual personal experience of the author during his six years spent in Canada. The text in this book has been formatted so that it can be searched using the "Search" and "Find" features of the freely available PDF file reading applications. We recommend using Adobe Reader (TM) V4 or later for maximum compatibility. more information

29) Virginia and Virginians, 2 Volumes
Brock, Robert Alonzo

Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2008. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM. This two-volume history focuses on individual Virginians and is replete with sketches of local individuals (see list of localities at the end of this description), detailing not only theirs and their wife’s and children’s places and dates of birth, but often providing information on previous generations and places of origin. These sketches are rich in information helpful in both scaling “brick walls” and adding depth to the story of one’s ancestors (and the ability to search the full document means the reader won’t miss information). Apparently based on the model of their successful Historical and Genealogical Encyclopedia, this publication by H. H. Hardesty Co. was written by Robert Alonzo Brock, secretary and librarian of the Virginia Historical Society, a noted Virginia historian and collector, and a prolific writer. Brock begins his history of eminent Virginians with chronological sketches or mini- biographies of the colonial governors or their representatives, followed by the governors of the Commonwealth through William Ewan Cameron who served as governor of Virginia 18821886 reserving his sketch of the current (at that time) governor Fitzhugh Lee for Volume 2. These are followed by “sketches” of Ambrose Powell Hill, R. E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson and Matthew Fontaine Maury. A 60-page history of colonial Virginia through the Revolution is followed by a brief 8-page description of Virginia’s history to the Civil War; however, over 150 pages detail events during the “War Between the States.” The history, written by Virgil A. Lewis, who was appointed West Virginia’s first state historian and archivist in 1905, was revised by Brock, but retains many details from western Virginia’s early history. Volume two begins with a 35-page history of the Confederate navy. It is followed by a 50-page chronoogical list of 2,261 Civil War battles and engagements giving the date, name of the battle or engagement and the state in which it occurred. Fifty-plus pages are filled with sketches of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, presidents of the United States, the then current governor of Virginia, Fitzhugh Lee, the author, Major William T. Sutherlin, and General V. D. Groner. The final 250-plus pages in this edition provide sketches of prominent citizens of the counties of Campbell, Dinwiddie, Elizabeth City, Halifax, James City, Nansemond, Norfolk, Nottoway, Pittsylvania, Prince Edward, Warwick and Washington. Originally published in 1888. This electronic book includes high-quality images of every page as originally published (not just a transcript) and is fully searchable using Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 4 or later recommended) on any Windows, Macintosh, or Unix computer. 30) The Captives of Abb's Valley, A Legend of Frontier Life
Brown, James Moore

Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2007. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM. Unlike other areas Southwest Virginia and most of West Virginia continued to face the threat of Indian attacks from the end of the French and Indian War until General Wayne defeated the Indians in 1794. The Captives of Abb's Valley details the experiences of one family during this period. Written in 1854 by the son of one of the captives, the story of Mary Moore's early life, capture and later return provides the reader with details of early pioneer life as well as its dangers. Both Mary and her brother James and their companion in captivity Martha Evans survived and left numerous descendants who intermarried with the Brown, Crow, Hummer, Morrison and Taylor families, among others. Mary Moore's father, Captain James Moore, a second generation Scotch-Irish Presbyterian who married Mary Poage and whose siblings married into the Coalter, Harrison, McPheeter, Paxton, Steele, Walker and Wallace families came from the New Providence Church area of Augusta County. The story spans the period from their settlement in 1771/2 in Abbs Valley, a long narrow valley, pressing against the ridge of mountains that divides Virginia and West Virginia in present day Tazewell County to the death of Mary Moore in Rockbridge County in 1824. Written in the style of the period with a strong focus on the merits of religious faith, the story also details the everyday life of the participants and provides a picture of what life was like for other families on the frontier. The detailed descriptions of clothing, the raising of livestock, the scarcity of cutlery, the booty collected by the Indians and their treatment of their captives are drawn from the experiences of the individuals involved many of whom the author knew personally. 32) The Western Gazetteer or Emigrant's Directory viz the states of Kentucky, Indiana, Louisiana, Ohio, Tennessee and Mississippi and the Territories of Illinois, Missouri, Alabama, Michigan, and NorthWestern
Brown, Samuel R

Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2007. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM. Westward Ho! but where? Have you ever wondered why your ancestor decided to move-and even more importantly why did he choose ____? How to books are not a modern phenomena. Real estate brochures are not new. This 1817 volume provides a description of the western states and territories- one state so new it is still unnamed-and discussions of soil, climate, diseases, vegetable mineral and animal productions as well as extensive descriptions of the rivers, lakes, roads and other items that impact travel. We learn about the price and quality of the land, forts and Indian tribes in the area, settlement patterns, and trade and manufacturing opportunities. The book is filled with interesting details: improved farms in Warren County, Ohio, are selling for $15; it takes from 4 to 6 weeks to go from Mobile to Fort Jackson on the Alabama River, Gallipolis, Ohio, has 76 houses, a courthouse and a nearby vineyard that is expected to produce a 1000 gallons of wine and Springville, Indiana, first settled in 1816 by Samuel Owens, James Garton and John Gray, now contains 50 houses and 250 inhabitants. Although brief (less than 10 pages) the directions to emigrants provides a glimpse into the world of the family making the decision to move. The mode of transportation, time of departure and final destination were all decisions that were made-often without practical guidance. Bad water, poor or no food, even the time of year selected for travel impacted the final results. Whether you want a detailed description of life in Ohio or a verbal map of the best way to get from New York state to Ohio and Indiana, this book can provide the answer. Originally published in 1817. 33) Black's Law Dictionary 1891
Campbell, Henry

Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2006. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM. A Dictionary of Law Containing Definitions of the Terms and Phrases of American and English Jurisprudence, Ancient and Modern (First Edition, 1891) and (Second Edition 1910) Every genealogist, regardless of their time and place of interest, must have a copy of Black's Law Dictionary in their library. Legal terminology differs from place to place and time to time, and successful genealogical research depends on the clear understanding of this changing terminology. The publishers of Black's Law Dictionary are now producing their eighth edition, and the newer editions have added information on the developments in the law in recent decades. But for genealogists the earlier editions retain their value, since they have a higher proportion of information on older law, especially the English feudal law, which is essential for the interpretation of documents from the American colonial period and from the England that the colonists left. While these volumes contain just the sort of legal verbiage that one would expect, there are many other reasons for consulting these volumes. Terms from legal Latin and legal French are included, as well as words and phrases from Scottish and Welsh law. There are dozens of Latin and French terms of kinship, which appear in older wills and lawsuits. There are definitions from the lexicon of agriculture, such as "treet," meaning fine wheat, and "tremesium," meaning the season or time of sowing summer corn. And much more. In the second edition, also included here, Black included more citations to law reports and case law, in support of his definitions, and also added many more terms of medical jurisprudence. This CD is fully searchable and can be viewed using Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 4 or later recommended) on any Windows, Macintosh, or Unix computer. The data on this CD is completely self-contained, and requires no installation. The paper edition of the book has long been recognized as an essential reference tool for genealogists: "Black's Law Dictionary is absolutely indispensable for genealogy, given the wide range of legal documents we work with and the specialized and archaic language we must interpret." more information

34) Campbell's Gazetteer of Missouri
Campbell, R.A

Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2007. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM. Although described as a gazetteer, this volume is also a guide to the state detailing its physical, commercial and manufacturing attributes. The material is presented in alphabetical order by county. A brief history of the beginning of the settlement in the county (often listing the names of the first settlers) sets the stage. The reader is also provided with population figures taken from the federal censuses, a description of the county's physical features including waterways and land forms, its agricultural production, manufacturing interests, wealth, exports, railroads, and educational facilities. A list of the post offices each with a brief description which usually contains a list of the commercial and manufacturing establishments and number of inhabitants is also included as part of the county description. An index of the current (1874) post offices at the beginning of the text identifies the county in which it lies and notes the name of any railroad which served that town. As with most areas, there is some duplication of names, for example, a Thomasville in both Owen and Randolph counties and a Union City in both Atchison and Jasper counties. Information about the counties was solicited from over 500 contributors. These are listed in the front of the book with their occupation and residence. The list makes fascinating reading-ranging from an ex-governor of Wisconsin to local lawyers and ministers and an occasional farmer. A list of subscribers at the end of the book includes their business or occupation, county of residence and the date of their settlement in Missouri. The last section of the gazetteer includes a general discussion of the topography of the state, its railroads, educational facilities, history, religious denominations, climate, minerals -specifically lead and iron and the physical geography including geology, mines and useful minerals, waters, prairies, timber soils and pottery clays. Surveyors and land entrepreneurs have long been known to gage the quality of the soil by the types of trees found upon it. The geology section gives an extensive discussion of the connection between the two. Originally published in 1874. Chapin, William

Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2007. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM. Contains 354 pages. Originally published in 1839, Chapin has captured an immense amount of data depicting the topographical organization of the United States at a critical point in its history, when the Industrial Revolution was transforming the countryside. There is information on physical features, political divisions and transportation networks. There are lengthy entries for each state, substantial accounts of the larger cities, and lesser accounts for smaller towns and villages, right down to the smallest of rural post offices. Population figures are included where available. Chapin gathered his data at a critical time, immediately after the Panic of 1837, when the country was on the road to economic recovery. His title promises "A Notice of the Various Canals, Railroads and Internal Improvements" of the United States. The building of canals and of national roads had been underway for some time, but the construction of railroads was in its earliest years. As a result, the years around and immediately after the date of this gazetteer would have as great an impact on the economy of the country as the Interstate Highway system of the 1950s and 1960s. In each state account, Chapin takes great care to list each of the canal and railroad building projects recently completed or then underway, with the mileage completed or contemplated for each canal or railroad. 44) Historical Collections of the State of Pennsylvania
Day, Sherman

Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2008. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM. Written in 1843 not as a general history of the state but as individual histories of each county, this volume serves both as a history and gazetteer and provides interesting anecdotes tidbits of information. Perhaps no better explanation of the contents of Day's work can be found than in the writer's own description of the source of much of his material: "the compiler has been compelled to undertake personally the tour of the entire state; spending much time in each county, examining ancient newspapers and musty manuscripts; conversing with the aged pioneers, and collecting from them, orally, many interesting facts never before published, which otherwise would probably not have been preserved." Sprinkled among the historical facts and stories are interesting and helpful tidbits of information. For example, in his section on Alleghany County the author notes "This county was originally settled principally by Scotch-Irish, many of whom emigrated from the Kittatinny valley, others directly from Ireland." It's often that intermediate stop that creates brick walls for so many of us. Rarely do we find the answer in print as we do here. Tracking records can also be a problem and there are frequent references to the establishment of early churches and the names of early ministers which can be extremely helpful when looking for church records. Written in 1843 when many of the people had parents who were living during the Revolutionary and Indian wars, the stories told by them contain personal information not found in today's records. Descriptions of major towns and geographic points of interest in each county are included in the county description. Brief biographies of local citizens and the short descriptions of events important to the county history often told by family members or participants round out the county histories. A brief introductory history of the state beginning with the Indian occupancy through the settlements of the Dutch and Swedes and the establishment of the "colony of William Penn" to the present (1843) provides an introduction to the individual county histories. The 165 engravings include buildings, towns and other points of interest. Originally published in 1843. The CD includes high-quality images of every page as originally published (not just a transcript) and is fully searchable using Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 5 or later recommended) on any Windows, Macintosh, or Unix computer. 47) Medical Lexicon. A Dictionary of Medical Science
Dunglison, Robley

Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2004. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM. Contains 1072 pages. Originally published in 1865, this compendious volume is far more than a dictionary, providing a wide range of medical information as it was known at the end of the Civil War. The author has added much to this second edition of his work, and has designed it to be "A French As Well As An English Medical Lexicon." There are many areas of terminology included here, included anatomy, chemistry, herbal medicine, pharmacology, and many more. Latin and French forms of many words are given, and Latin and Greek etymologies are also frequent. There are also unexpected data sets dispersed through the volume in their proper alphabetic place, such as spas and health resorts, both in Europe and in the United States, or the terminology used in various magical systems of healing. Many of the medicines and medical conditions covered by this volume have multiple names, sometimes dozens, in England, French and Latin. Each of these names appears in its proper place in the alphabet, with a cross-reference to the appropriate main entry, where one finds not only the definition but a complete compilation of all the variant names. This feature especially will be very helpful in understanding causes of death as they may be entered in various public and private records. In many instances, the entries carry on for a page or more, providing information that one would expect to find in an encyclopedia rather than a dictionary. For example, the entry for "Artery" covers a page and a half, while the entry for "Cinchona" and its derivatives spans more than a page and describes the many types and uses of the bark of this tree. more information

48) Indiana and Indianans: A History of Aboriginal and Territorial Indiana and the Century of Statehood
Dunn, Jacob Piatt

Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2007. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM. Frequently cited in biographies of the Indianans, Dunn's five- volume history of Indiana is both thorough and readable. Beginning with prehistoric times, the writer carries the reader through each era from Indian settlement to the 1900s. Reachers stopping to read a particular entry are likely to find themselves completing the chapter before moving on to the next item of interest. The first 8 chapters provide a chronological history. These are follow by separate chapters on the medical history; education; transportation, commerce and industry; charities and correction; temperance; and New Harmony. The second volume ends with two chapters on the word Hoosier and the Hoosier character. Details abound. The reader finds everything from a description of how soldiers cooked their food during the War of 1812 to the detailed demise of a poorly operated bank. Although the first two volumes are liberally sprinkled with names of the individuals involved in the state's history on the local and state level, the final two volumes are composed of biographies of these and other individuals living throughout the state. Ranging from a single paragraph to two pages, they provide extended detail often identifying the emigrant's county of origin, parents, grandparents and even great grandparents-tracking their migration from Europe through the eastern states to Indiana. Individuals named range from first generation German immigrants to descendants of Hessian soldiers who served during the Revolution. Details include specific dates of birth and death, service in the Revolution through World War I and European origins in some instances as specific as an 18th century county of origin in Ireland. The ability to search these volumes for individual names, places and events enhances its value as a research tool. Originally published in 1919. The CD includes high-quality images of every page as originally published (not just a transcript) and is fully searchable using Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 5 or later recommended) on any Windows, Macintosh, or Unix computer. The data on this CD is completely self-contained, and requires no installation. more information

Struggle for Freedom : The History of Anglo-American Liberty : From The Charter of Henry I to the Present Day
Milwaukee, WI: Bruce Publishing Co.. 1946. H Cloth. Good. Binding is tight. Pages are crisp. Indexed. Bibliography. Former Library book with stamps on a few pages. Pocket and date due removed. Red cloth boards with gilt print on front cover and spine. Spine is discolored. Marks on both covers. Edgewear. Corners bumped. "With the political legal problems of our day fully in mind, the writer at once brings us back a millenium and more to the establishment in Great Britain of a free commonwealth by Angles, Jutes, and Saxons. From the first-mentioned of these three tribes England received its name. Based on freedom and mutual good will, this was the beginning of Anglo-American political history. But liberty, however firmly established, was not to last forever." This book is just one of many from the entire collection we acquired from the estate of a respected genealogist/author. His library contained numerous historical works, both fiction and nonfiction. Many may have his notes inside on the back pages and margin marks, which were used as his reference materials. 50) Records of the Olden Time; or Fifty Years on the Priaries Embracing Sketches of the Discovery, Exploration, and Settlement of the Country, the Organization of the Counties of Putnam and Marshall, incidents and reminiscences connected therewith
Ellsworth, Spencer

Columbia, MD: Archive CD Books USA. 2008. CD-ROM. New. CD-ROM. Previously hidden in this over 750-page unindexed volume (but now accessible via this searchable text version) are the names and origins of numerous settlers of Putnam and Marshall County, Illinois. Published in 1880, its author proposed “to trace the early settlement of that portion of our State embraced in the counties of Putnam and Marshall, gathering up the forgotten records of each township and neighborhood, and telling for the benefit of their descendants the story . . . of their ancestors.” Part of the military land tract granted to veterans of the War of 1812 lay in present Putnam and Marshall counties and obviously drew many of the settlers to the area. When it was created in 1825 Putnam County’s southern line followed the northern border of present Peoria County and the Illinois and Kankakee Rivers to the Indiana line which it then followed north to Wisconsin and west to within 35 miles of the Mississippi before turning south. It included 11,000 square miles of northern Illinois. Marshall County which included a portion of this territory was created in 1839. Settlement, however, began much earlier. In 1750 the area was described by Veiver, a French missionary: “We have here whites, negroes and Indians, to say nothing of cross-breeds. There are five French villages and three villages of the natives within a space of twenty-one leaguesbetween the Mississippi and Karkadiad (Kaskaskia) Rivers. In them all there are perhaps eleven hundred people, three hundred whites and sixty red slaves, or savages. Most of the French till the soil. They raise wheat, cattle, pigs and horses, and live like princes. Three times as much is produced as can be consumed, and great quantities of grain and flour are shipped to New Orleans.” The volume begins with a history of the numerous expeditions of the many earlier adventurers from Columbus to LaSalle (chapters one-six). Chapters seven and eight detail early Indian settlements. Chapters nine through thirteen are the early settlement. The history of present Putnam County begins with chapter 14. There are frequent citations from early records including a list of all the voters in the first county election. Chapters 15 through 21 cover the Black Hawk War providing muster rolls and detailed descriptions of specific events. Chapters 2248 give township by township descriptions of the area including topography and stories of early settlers, towns, churches, schools and interesting events. The final section contains biographies of citizens of the various townships, almost all of which detail the place of birth of both the husband and wife, her maiden name, the names of their children and the year of settlement. The volume also includes chapters on the Underground Railroad and the Reed and Donner Party since some in the party were from Putnam County. This is a veritable treasure trove of information on early settlers in the area. Originally published in 1880. This electronic book includes high-quality images of every page as originally published (not just a transcript) and is fully searchable using Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 4 or later recommended) on any Windows, Macintosh, or Unix computer.
