From the preface: This study has as its purpose the investigation of certain physical concepts of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries by means of the problem method. This method, so universally used in the science of today and so rarely employed in studies of late medieval thought, is necessary to provide the material from which generalizations can be drawn. Some of the material presented here will seem of little significance in the light of modern science. It is only too obvious, however, that we can never have a faithful representation of the natural philosophy of any period without presenting its "error" conjointly with its "truth". Although Giovanni Marliani is perhaps less important from the standpoint of the proportion of "truth" to "error" than some of his fourteenth century predecessors (e.g. Bradwardine, Swineshead, Dumbleton, Buridan, Oresme), he was considered by his contemporaries as an outstanding figure int he academic world.
