Commentary on the American Scene, Portraits of Jewish Life in America
New York: Knopf, 1953. Written by a Jew and about Jews, Commentary on the American Scene, Portraits of Jewish Life in America is a book about the Jewish immigrant experience in America. It was edited by Eliot E. Cohen and published in this 1953 FIRST EDITION by Knopf, New York, using commentary pieces that were first published in a magazine called From the American Scene that was devoted to Jewish affairs and world issues. In the introduction, David Riseman speaks of what these pieces show of the Jewish group in the American setting their origins, their socio-economic status, etc., They also speak, says the editor, of the extra dimension given to Jewish personality and life by the fact that each Jew moves, consciously or not, in the context of a long and special history and a religious-ethical tradition that lays upon him the sense of being chosen and creates the tendency even the obligation, -- to carry himself with a difference. It is this that plays a persistent counterpoint humorous, pathetic, tragic, farcical to whatever Jews do or are! The book is fascinating reading and in Very Good condition, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. Covers do show some minor edge/corner/spine end wear and sun-fading of the spine and cover edges. There is a 1-inch tear at bottom front of spine. Inside pages are without any apparent defects. THE BIBLE AND THE SCHOOLS
Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1966. Few topics arouse the emotions of Americans more vehemently than the questions of the relationship of Church and State in our constitutional democracy. Unfortunately, most of what has been written about this issue has been more impassioned than enlightening, especially when the specific question has been whether Bible reading and official prayers should be an integral part of the public school curriculum. In THE BIBLE AND THE SCHOOLS, however, Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas calmly yet eloquently discussed this explosive issue and made clear the reasoning behind the epochal Supreme Court decisions regarding religion in the public schools. He notes that the framers of our Constitution provided for tolerance of all religions and preference for none; yet they also intended that the First Amendment should protect the citizens right to reject all faiths. The 65-page hardbound book provides a much-needed authoritative guide to one of the most important controversies of our time! It was published in this 1966 FIRST EDITION by Little, Brown and Co., Boston. Condition of the book is Very Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. We see no defects on either the covers or inside pages. The dust jacket is present and is protected with a Mylar cover. Its a great book and one thats become quite rare over the years. GREAT FUNDAMENTALS OF THE BIBLE
Mountain View CA: Pacific Press Publishing , 1946. Original 1946 5th Printing of the 1936 hardbound. 192 pages. In the Introduction, the author writes: 'This generation in which we are now living is witnessing the greatest combination of wonders, dangers, bewildering problems, and unheard-of perplexities that has ever confounded mankind. The one-time cherished bulwark of democracy and freedom is being badly shattered by its deadly impact with powerful world movements which are opposing peace and liberty. The absolute monarchies of bygone days appear upon the modern stage of action in the form of dictators swaying the destinies of millions. Where will it all end? To what do these things point? What is the meaning of it all? Can a solution be found of earth's mighty problems? ' He goes on to show, with Biblical references, how these problems can be solved. Numerous black/white illustrations. Condition is Very Good, with very minor corner/spine end wear. Inside pages, however, have no apparent defects and are clean, crisp and ready to read!
