Stories of some of the more notorious pirates including Philip Roach, John Gow, Henry Morgan, Captain Kidd, and others, as well as a section on women pirates. Finger makes the nice observation that "Pirates, generally speaking, did for themselves and on their own personal accounts and sometimes were hanged for doing those things for which they would have been praised and knighted had they done them in the name of patriotism." Discussing Francis Drake, he notes, "But Drake was also a pirate of the first water, burning, slaying, laying to waste as cheerfully as did Avery, or Lowther, or Blackbeard Teach." Among many exciting stories that of Mary Read, woman pirate, is certainly wilder than any fiction-writer's plot. Finger writes here with his usual open-minded perspective on history. Lyrics to a couple of well-known pirate songs are quoted here, too. Slight fading at edges of wraps, internally bright. LBB. Paperbound. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. more information

37) WHAT GREAT MEN HAVE SAID ABOUT WOMEN; WHAT GREAT WOMEN HAVE SAID ABOUT MEN - Little Blue Books #77 and #304
Haldeman-Julius, Editor

Girard Kansas: Haldeman-Julius Company Two volumes of the incredible Little Blue Book series by Haldeman-Julius:not dated. Blue paper wraps. 64 and 62 pages respectively. Both consist of literary quotations. Both volumes are in very good condition with only slight fading to wraps: "Men" has faint ink notations at the top of the wrap. Pages are aged, as usual. One price takes both, as these should stay together! The quotes from the men concerning women tend toward loftiness, commending women's beauty, wifely duty, and unrealistic graces. From Milton: "The wife, where danger or dishonour lurks,/Safest and seemliest by her husband stays,/Who guards her, or with her the worst endures." [yeah, right - tell Gingrich] Although now and then there is a sour note, as from Lord Byron: "Oh! ye lords of ladies intellectual,/Inform us truly, have they not hen-peck'd you all?" The quotes from women tend toward the realistic and pragmatic. George Sand: "A man's honour must be very frail, if he cannot make himself respected, without having a sword dangling at his side." And from Jane Austen: "If this man had not twelve thousand a year, he would be a very stupid fellow.". Apparent Firsts. Paperbound. Very Good. 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall.
