2) THE DRAUGHTS-PLAYER'S GUIDE AND COMPANION: A Guide to the Student, and Companion for the Advanced Player
Dunne, Frank

Warrington: Frank Dunne, 6, Manchester Road,, 1890. Hardcover, red cloth with blind-stamped borders and gilt spine and cover titles. 212 pp plus 2 pp ads, illustrated with B&W board diagrams. Everything you could possibly want to know about the game of draughts (checkers) from arhcaeology and history to various versions including Spanish, Italian, Polish, and Turkish. The cover of this book is still bright in color (red) and gilt lettering, but there is a 1.25 X 1.5" square water spot at the lower spine corner on the top board that has lifted much of the color, and a half-inch wide tidemark across two-thirds of the bottom edge of the bottom board. Page edges darkened. Internally, there is glue offset darkening on pastedowns and endpapers, and the paper is dark (can' t say whether this is due to the quality or original color of the paper, or if the book has been near smoke at some time. If so, it was long ago as there is no blatant smoke odor to the book.) There are some small smudges and age spots scattered thr ough the text. Aside from the whitish spot in the lower corner, which could probably be expertly dyed, the book presents a sharp and pleasing appearance. This appears to be a first edition of an important gaming book that was much reprinted for many years after.. Hard Cover. Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. more information
