1) Mummies & Magic: The Funerary Arts of Ancient Egypt
D'Auria, Sue; Lacovara, Peter; Roehring, Catharine H

Dallas, Texas, U.S.A.: Dallas Museum of Art, 1992. No Edition. Soft Cover. New/No Jacket. Photographs. This exhibit was originally conceived and shown at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Working with the Dallas Museum of Art, they developed a long-term loan of the many Egyptian articles that Boston had no space to show. This catalog is a reprint of the Boston show, containing additional color images included in the Dallas exhibit. The topic embraces a broad spectrum of Egyptian life, and the Egyptians' beliefs about death and the dead. Through the study of actual mummies we can learn their ages at death, their medical and dental histories, and the diseases from which they suffered. By extension, the study of burials and tomb chapels, the art and architecture of tombs, and accompanying burial equipment provide the scholar with a rich and rewarding trove of information. 276 pages including an index, bibliography and abbreviations. Well illustrated, 8 pages of color. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. more information

3) The Legacy of Ancient Egypt
Freeman, Charles; Ray, John D

The Legacy of Ancient Egypt
New York, New York, U.S.A.: Facts on File, 1997. No Edition. Hard Cover. New/New. Photographs and Maps . To its neighbors, Egypt was a land of "gold as plentiful as dust" - a kingdom to be admired and envied, but too powerful to be taken. Other kingdoms rose and fell; Egypt endured. Over the course of the last 400 years, our picture of the land of the pharoahs has been built up piece by piece, leaving plenty of gaps for the imagination. Paradoxically, in the twentieth century - when most of Egypt's past has finally been well documented - the more familiar and everyday it becomes, the more there is a desire to cling to the exotic, the mysterious, the impenetrable. This comprehensive and lavishly illustrated book unwraps the layered shroud of history to reveal both Egypts: The real land of kings and queens, craftsmen, archeologists and tomb-robbers; and the Egypt of imagination, which has taken a hold on Western culture since its origins in classical Greece. 224 pages, including 14 fully illustrated, in-depth special features; more than 360 illustrations: 20 artwork, 20 maps, 320 photographs; timecharts, glossary, bibliography and a complete index. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. more information

4) Alexandria: The Submerged Royal Quarters
Goddio, Franck; Bernand, Andre

Alexandria: The Submerged Royal Quarters
London: Periplus Ltd., 1998. First Edition. Hard Cover. New/New. Photographs and Maps. This slip-cased publication presents for the first time the results of the work carried out in Alexandria by the Institut European d'Archeologie Sous Marine (IEASM). The 1992 season marks the date when the first topographical surveys were made and the archaeological campaigns of 1996 and 1997 are reported and analyzed in detail. From the first topographical survey the most modern techniques were used, which allowed the team to determine exactly the topography of the ancient Ptolemaic harbour and the city of Cleopatra. The contours of the ancient areas, today under the sea, discovery of exceptional archaeological remains, problems of ancient harbour installations and their function are discussed at length. Observations on the enigmas posed by the vast fields of submerged ruins, archaeological analysis, study of the stone blocks found, the epigraphy and a study of the pharaonica, along with an extensive comparison with the texts of ancient writers and a study of the statuary completes and enriches the subjects dealt with in this work. As well as a discussion of the results, precise data and hypotheses for further investigation are represented. 137 color photographs, 33 maps and 9 gatefolds included; 274 pages with a selected bibliography included. Printed on heavy paper, the cover of the book is the same as the slipcase in which it comes. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. more information

7) Women in Ancient Egypt
Robins, Gay

Women in Ancient Egypt
Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1996. Second Printing. Soft Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Photographs. An idealized version of women appears everywhere in the art of ancient Egypt, but the true nature of these women's lives has long remained hidden. This book cuts through the obscurity of the ages to show us what the archaeological riches of Egypt really say about how these women lived, both in the public eye and within the family. Here we see the everyday lives of women in the economic, legal, and domestic sphere from the Early Dynastic Period almost 5,000 years ago to the conquest of Alexander in 332 B.C. Within this kingdom ruled and run by men, women could still wield influence indirectly - and in some cases directly, when a woman took the position of "king". The exceptional few who assumed real power appear here in colorful detail, alongside their more traditional counterparts. 205 pages, references and an index. The bottom front corner is bent. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

8) The Discovery of Ancient Egypt
Siliotti, Alberto

The Discovery of Ancient Egypt
Edison, New Jersey, U.S.A.: Chartwell Books, 2001. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. Photographs and Illustrations. NEW - After its conquest by the Arabs in A.D. 640, Egypt became an impenetrable territory for Western travelers. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the civilization of the pharaohs was shrouded in a veil of mystery and magic that only began to be lifted at the beginning of the eighteenth century, when the first explorers started, in the face of many difficulties, to travel through the country and describe its monuments. However, it was not until the end of the eighteenth century, when Napoleon Bonaparte landed in Egypt at the head of his expeditionary force, that this civilization buried in the sand and lost in the mists of time attracted the attention of both scholars and the wider public in the West. Devoted to the remarkable story of the rediscovery of ancient Egypt, this book contains a large number of original illustrations, unique for their completeness and quality, in which adventure and exploration are interwoven with erudition and art. 368 pages including an index. This beautiful book is oversized (10 x 14) and heavy; it will require additional postage. The binding is ivory cloth. It has a bump on the top back that has created a small tear to the inside. The jacket has two tiny tears at the bottom, and a 1" tear with a small piece missing at the spine top. There is light wear at the corners with a 1/4" tear at the top front. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. more information

10) A Portrait of Egypt: A Journey Through the World of Militant Islam
Weaver, Mary Anne

A Portrait of Egypt: A Journey Through the World of Militant Islam
Gordonsville, Virginia, U.S.A.: Farrar Straus & Giroux, 2000. Soft Cover. New/No Jacket. Based on exclusive interviews with militants and front men, generals and presidents, and including a new profile of Osama bin Landen, A Portrait of Egypt is essential reading for anyone trying to understand the far-reaching consequences of the growing impact of Islamist politics and policies on the West. For centuries, Egypt has been a citadel of Islamic learning and thought, and since the signing of the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty in 1979, it has been of immense strategic importance to American interests in the Middle East. But Egypt is also a country in crisis, torn between the old and new, between unsettled religious revival and secular politics. The author argues that an Islamic victory in Egypt is almost inevitable and, unlike that of Shi'ite Iran, its impact on the Islamic world will be truly profound. 306 pages including an index. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

11) People of the Pharaohs: From Peasant to Courtier
Wilson, Hilary

London: Brockhampton Press Ltd., 1999. No Edition. Hard Cover. New/New. Photographs and Drawings . NEW Egypt has long been seen as the land of temples, tombs, and pyramids, inhabited by a population obsessed by death. But is this a true picture of Egyptian society? This volume provides a detailed study of the life, beliefs and achievements of the Egyptian people by examining ten trades, professions and occupations covering all levels of society from the peasant farmer to the King himself. The structure of society, founded on the family unit, was dedicated to the protection of the weakest members so that women and children were both valued and cherished. The priesthood cared for the gods who were the first citizens of Egypt, believing that, while their gods were content to live among them, the land was subject to the rule of Maat, an all-embracing concept of order, justice, and equilibrium. The King, a god on earth, was the supreme guardian of Maat and, while Maat was maintained, life was good, so good that the Egyptians wanted it to continue forever. The elaborate preparations they made for their everlasting existence, depicted here in fascinating detail, prove that life was the real Egyptian obsession. Illustrated with 100 drawings and over 30 colour pictures, this book is a great introduction to everyday life in Ancient Egypt. 248 pages including an index. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information
