1) Lady Poverty
Breton O.F.M., Valentine; Oligny O.F.M., Paul J. (Translated by)

Lady Poverty
Chicago, IL: Franciscan Herald Press, 1963. First American Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. To St. Francis, poverty, which most of us regard as a negative thing and an abstraction, was our Lady Poverty, a person and a playmate; yes, the bride of the religious. But there is a deeper reason why the saints loved poverty - because they were following our Lord Jesus Christ. Being rich, for our sakes he became poor; if he stripped himself, on earth, of all the glory and privileges that belonged to a divine person, was it too much that they should strip themselves of those perishable goods by which one man is distinguished from his fellowmen? And should not a Christ follower empty himself of all selfishness and adhere to God's will in obedience, so that he may be filled with all the fulness of God? Father Breton teaches the true scale of values in a Christian life in this classic book. 104 pages bound in cloth; there are two tiny holes at the top near the spine. The jacket has slight soiling to the front; the original price tag is on the front. Not price-clipped, in protective cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

2) Healing Prayer : God's Divine Intervention in Medicine, Faith and Prayer
Cherry, Reginald B

Nashville, TN, U.S.A.: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1999. Hard Cover. Fine/Very Good. This book will amaze you with new research from prestigious universities such as Duke and UCLA, documenting scientifically the power of prayer. More important, however, Dr. Cherry shares how God has instructed him to pray with patients. You will learn how, in faith, to pray effective, fervent prayers that avail much, as the bible instructs. The DJ has a few spots on it, and a few indents, and is a bit worn at the spine ends. 182 pages, no marks or tears. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

3) Protestantism in Guatemala: Living in the New Jerusalem
Garrard-Burnett, Virginia

Protestantism in Guatemala: Living in the New Jerusalem
Austin, Texas, U.S.A.: Univ of Texas Press, 1998. First Edition. Soft Cover. New/No Jacket. Guatemala has undergone an unprecedented conversion to Protestantism since the 1970s, so that 30 percent of its people now belong to Protestant churces, more than in any other Latin American nation. To illuminate some of the causes of this phenomenon, Virginia Garrard-Burnett here offers the first history in English of Protestantism in Guatemala, focusing specifically on the rise on non-Catholic Christianity in relation to Guatemala's ethnic and political history. The author finds that while Protestant missionaries were early valued for their medical clinics, schools, translation projects, and especially for the counterbalance they provided against Roman Catholicism, Protestantism itself attracted few converts until the 1960s. Since the, however, the militarization of the state, increasing public violence, and the "globalization" of Guatemalan national politics have undermined the traditional ties of kinship, custom, and belief that gave Guatemalans a sense of identity, and many are turning to Protestantism to recreate a sense of order, identity, and belonging. 248 pages including notes, bibliography, and an index. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

4) Through the Wilderness of Loneliness
Hansel, Tim

Through the Wilderness of Loneliness
Elgin, Illinois: David C. Cook Publishing, 1991. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. We all suffer the anguish of loneliness from time to time - when our kids leave home, when a loved one dies, when no one else seems to understand our feelings, or perhaps even in the middle of a joyous crowd. Loneliness can strike powerfully and unexpectedly, and it is much more common than we might expect. Yet loneliness also has a purpose. This book will help you discover the reasons behind much of the lineliness you feel, and he will take you from there into the promise of loneliness. For without occasional lonely episodes, we tend to take for granted the wonderful joy of having an ever-present Companion who walks beside us even when we can't comprehend His presence. This book is written in short segments so you can put it down anytime and dwell on the parts that are most meaningful to you. 166 pages; the prior owner's name is written in on the ffep. 5) New Anti-Catholicism, The: The Last Acceptable Prejudice
Jenkins, Philip

New Anti-Catholicism, The: The Last Acceptable Prejudice
New York: Oxford University Press Inc., 2003. First Edition. Hard Cover. New/Near Fine. Anti-Catholicism has a long history in America. And as Philip Jenkins argues in The New Anti-Catholicism, this virulent strain of hatred - once thought dead - is alive and well in our nation, but few people seem to notice, or care. A statement that is seen as racist, misogynistic, anti-Semitic, or homophobic can haunt a speaker for years, writes Jenkins, but it is still possible to make hostile and vituperative public statements about Roman Catholicism without fear of serious repercussions. Jenkins shines a light on anti-Catholic sentiment in American society and illumiates its causes, looking closely at gay and feminist anti-Catholicism, anti-Catholic rhetoric and imagery in the media, and the anti-Catholicism of the academic world. It was said that with the election of John F. Kennedy, anti-Catholicism in America was dead. This provocative book corrects that illusion, drawing attention to this important issue. 258 pages, including an index. The black cover shows some rubbing. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

9) The St. Matthew Passion: A Text for Voices
Reeves, John

The St. Matthew Passion: A Text for Voices
Grand Rapids, Michigan, U.S.A.: Eerdmans Pub Co, 2001. First Thus. Hard Cover. New/New. Musical settings of the story of Christ's Passion, as recounted by St. Matthew, date back to antiquity. First incorporated into the liturgy as a chant for Palm Sunday, the Passion text of St. Matthew developed over the centuries into elaborate settings for choir and soloists with instrumental accompaniment. J. S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion is widely acknowledged as the pinnacle of this tradition and, even more, as one of the greatest achievements of Western music. Award-winning poet John Reeves here offers 21 verse meditations directly inspired by Bach's masterpiece. Written and arranged to be heard as well as read, these eloquent poems capture Reeve's own experience of hearing Bach's work performed in various cities around the world. The poems are introduced and linked by short passages of prose. These identify the cities visited by Reeves, annotate Bach's response to the Passion as a believer and composer, evoke the various church liturgies commemorating the Passion, and relate each poem to the point reached in the Passion story. The inclusion of a fine English translation of Bach's libretto at the end of the volume adds value to Reeve's creative work. 108 pages, this is a beautifully-bound book with a translucent cover. The front inside flap corners have been folded in a bit. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

13) Raised By Wolves: The Story of Christian Rock & Roll
Thompson, John J

Raised By Wolves: The Story of Christian Rock & Roll
Toronto, Ontario, Canada: E C W Press, 2000. No Edition. Soft Cover. New/No Jacket. Kotthoff, Dinah K.. This is an insider's look at the birth, evolution and growing popularity of Christian rock music. As the counter-culture movement of the sixties gathered steam, one of its first splinter groups was the Jesus freaks. In addition to newly hip pastors, the scene produced a handful of musicians who brazenly coupled rock & roll music with lyrics that reflected a Christian world-view. Jesus music was born. But by the late sixties, Christian rock had been rejected by its forefathers and dismissed by mainstream pop culture. Legions of creative musicians suddenly found themselves orphaned - left to be raised by wolves. As the author argues, these musicians are the real rebels of rock & roll, living on the fringes of an underground Christian culture, and discovering what can be accomplished when art is combined with faith. Full of photographs that reveal the amazing diversity of the Christian rock scene, this volume presents a detailed exploration of the artists, the social conditions, and, above all, the music that has married Christianity and rock & roll for more than 30 years. 262 pages including an extensive index. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information
