David Copperfield
New York: Gallery Books, 1985. First Edition. Hard Bound, Pictorial. Near Fine/No Jacket. David Copperfield was Dickens' own favorite novel. Many of David's adventures as he grows up are those of Dickens himself; from poverty and obscurity he wins through to success and happiness. This abridgement of Copperfield has been simplified for a young audience, but keeps faithfully to Dickens' original text. The lively illustrations come from a series of animated classics. This book was in a school library; the only mark is on the fep - it says 4K. The corners and spine ends of the orange binding are worn a bit. 56 pages, illustrated in full color. The Summer Birds
New York: Harcourt Brace & World, 1962. Hard Cover. Fine/Good. Spanfellar, James J.. Who was the strange boy that Charlotte and Emma met in the lane one morning on their way to school? Where did he come from? Why was he here? Whoever he was, he taught each of the children in the small English village to fly like birds during that wonderful, never-to-be-forgotten summer. There was an eerie and exciting moonlight flight, day-long expeditions to a remote and lovely little lake, and one daring jouney to the sea when Charlotte learned to swoop like a gull from the cliff top. In this haunting story, the reader enters into the children's world completely and at the end feels with them some of the sadness of growing up. 155 pages, cloth cover, black & white illustrations. DJ is sun-lightened on the front; small chips along top front and two small tears. Heavy wear at corners and spine ends. Moderate wear along spine hinge. Elsie Dinsmore
New York: Grosset & Dunlap. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. This is the first in a series of "Elsie Dinsmore" books. Living with her uncles family on a southern plantation in the mid-nineteenth century, motherless eight-year-old Elsie finds it difficult to establish a relationship with her worldy father who seems indifferent to her and her religious principles. This book is humorous as well, maybe because it was written in the 1890's; most of Elsie's problems result in her crying. I'm sure there is no other character who cries as much as Elsie, which becomes kind of funny in itself! This is a wonderful book for any age, though, as her life is absorbing, interesting, and difficult all at once. I've read the entire series and often go back to this volume as something like an old friend; despite her problems with her father, he turns out to be a - oh, I can't give it away. 316 pages, probably published in the 1940s or '50s. There is a gift inscription on the decorated endpapers. The yellow binding has lightly worn corners, and is a somewhat darker on the left front which extends to the spine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

A Carnival of Animals

New York, New York, U.S.A.: Greenwillow Books, 2000. First Edition. Hard Cover. New/New. Hafner, Marylin. For ages 7 and up. A no-account little tornado comes twirling along. It means no great harm, but for the animals in the shadow of Barefoot Mountain life will never be the same. A 400-pound hog finds a wind-tossed harmonica and learns to play. Emperor Floyd, a wild rooster, is frightened into insomnia and keeps everyone awake by crowing in the middle of the night. Stumblefrog discovers a sack of Mexican jumping beans left in the path of the twister, and guess what happens? Most curious of all, the storm drops a "strange little animal, all pink skin and bones, lying in a heap against a hollow log." Its fur or feathers have been plucked clean by the tornado, and no one can guess what the nature of odd animal the "Windblown Child" is. Everyone is in for a huge and wondrous surprise! New York: Orchard Books, 1996. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine. Ages 11 and up. "Please make me plain," young Psyche begs the gods. But with each year her loveliness grows - stirring the jealousy of her two older sisters. Throughout their father's kingdom it is said that Psyche is more beautiful that even Venus, the goddess who rules over passionate desire. Glowering down from the heavens, Venus sees mortals abandoning her temples, worshiping this upstart girl instead. Enraged, the goddess sends her son Cupid to earth, commands to inflame Psyche "with a passion for the crudest, meanest fool." But at first sight of her, Cupid is himself inflamed. All that happens in this ancient tale - here given new, fleshed-out power in Psyche's own voice - happens because of love. A terrifying journey to the underworld and the other cruel punishments inflicted by Venus are themselves inhuman tests. The courage Psyche summons to survive them is well-nigh superhuman, but her very humanness, Amor sees at last, is her greatest gift to him - and through him to lovers for all time. 116 pages. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

Surprise for Mrs Burns
Chicago, IL: Albert Whitman and Company, 1971. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Siculan, Dan. This is Glennette Turner's first published book, and is somewhat rare. It is a story of an African-American grade school teacher who is leaving her position at the end of the year. The kids find out about it and are upset, because they really like her (Ms. Turner was a grade school teacher before she turned to freelance writing). They decide to throw a surprise party for her, and the book is how they go about their plans, including some other teachers, without Mrs. Burns finding out. It is a delightful story and some of the children she taught suggested some of the characters in the book - and the boys are quite like the author's boys! Taped to the inside front cover is a newspaper clipping with a photograph of the author, regarding a film that was made entitled "The Underground Railroad in DuPage County, Illinois." The clipping has slightly yellowed the opposite page, which is signed and dated by the author. 8 1/2" x 7 1/4" wide. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

New York: Alfred a Knopf Inc, 1992. First Edition. Hard Cover. As New/Near Fine. Root, Barry. This is a story that will resonate with many families this Christmas. Drawing on the author's memories from her own 1950s childhood, this warm, simply told story creates a portrait of a family separated by distance but held together by love. Can Christmas be the same without Daddy? He's a soldier in faraway Japan this year, so his two young children and their mother prepare for the holiday as they've always done, except that they mail Daddy's presents to him in Japan. Then they receive a large wooden box, marked "Do Not Open Until Christmas." And while a wooden box can't take Daddy's place, it holds its own promise for an unforgettable Christmas. 29 pages, fully illustrated in color. The jacket front has a vertical wrinkle in it, and is a bit wrinkled at the top spine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information
