My Life with Animals
Laurel Park, CA: Lane Book Company, 1964. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Maniscalco, Joe. The author of this book was the Director of San Francisco Zoological Gardens. "The stories in this book are the accumulation of many, many years' experience with animals, and they represent highlights rather than everyday occurrences. These things just don't happen every day. Remember, too, that a zoo is not merely a collection of lions and tigers and elephands and such, but is a fascinating accumulation of individuals. Every individual animal, like every individual human being, has his personality, his quirks - and his moments." From the Preface. This book contains anecdotes from San Simeon Zoo as well as the San Francisco Zoo and involve bears, lions, zoo babies, animals that are hotheads and malcontents, and many more. It also asks the question: Do Animals Reason? 255 pages, this book is well illustrated with drawings. Gaskell, Jeremy

Who Killed the Great Auk?
Oxford, England: Oxford Univ Press, 2000. First Printing. Hard Cover. New/New. Wilczur, Jan. The Great Auk is one of the world's best known extinct birds. On land it was clumsy and awkward, but in the sea, where it spent a large part of the year, it was perfectly adapted for swift and efficient movement. By the beginning of the 19th century sightings of the bird had become rare and only a few decades later even the most assiduous explorers could not find it. What happened to the Great Auk? The author pieces together all of the important historical data and takes us on a tour of some of the wildest and most remote communities on earth. We travel to Labrador, the Scottish Island of St. Kilda, Newfoundland, and follow intrepid naturalists as they put to sea in search of the very last of the Great Auks. 227 pages with appendices, bibliography and index. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information
