3) Monsters and Aliens from George Lucas
Carrau, Bob

Monsters and Aliens from George Lucas
New York: Abradale/Abrams, 1993. No Edition. Hard Cover. New/New. Some of the most bizarre monsters and aliens ever seen populate the films of George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars trilogy, and they are as important to the enormous success of these movies as are the heroic characters and suspenseful plots. Here are portraits and descriptions of a never-before-assembled group of Lucas' eeriest strangelings and other-worldly beings. The text is an amusing compendium of interesting personal data in the form of diary entries, recipes, resumes, want ads, and weight-training routines. Picked up by the most modern and intrusive of means - fiberoptic taps, tubular refuse scrounging, interviews (at great risk to the interviewer's life), mind readings, and even sky fishing - these private revelations from out-of-bound psyches make for fascinating reading - a space-traveling voyeur's delight. Unpaginated, 50 illustrations, 25 in full color. The binding is pictorial with a small bump to the top. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. more information

4) The Runes of Elfland
Froud, Brian; Berk, Ari

The Runes of Elfland
New York: Harry N Abrams Inc, 2003. First Printing. Hard Cover. New/New. Froud, Brian. The ancient, mystical runes of Celtic and European origin provide a rich source of inspiration for the faery authority and fantasy artist Brian Froud's evocative paintings, which interpret these potent symbols through the prism of Elfland - the world of faeries and myth. With text by poet and folklorist Ari Berk, the secret meanings of these runes are teased out; the power they offer us is made manifest. By using the runes and Froud's paintings as tools to explore both the "seen" and "unseen" worlds, this book will inspire readers to re-imagine their own lives and tell their own tales. Both storybook and oracle, this volume provides a wellspring of personal insight for the Froud fan and rune aficionado. 112 pages, full color illustrations. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. more information

5) Goblins!: A Survival Guide and Fiasco in Four Parts
Froud, Brian; Berk, Ari

Goblins!: A Survival Guide and Fiasco in Four Parts
New York: Harry N Abrams Inc, 2004. First Printing. Hard Cover. New/No Jacket. Froud, Brian; Froud, Wendy. This collaboration of Ari Berk (text) and Brian and Wendy Froud (art and 3D goblinizations) produced a truly odd and humorous volume. Throughout the book are wonderful 'photographs' of goblins and information about their habits, their history, and themselves. Unfortunately, some of the goblins got hold of the manuscript and in a big, red crayon changed some of the wording here, added some wording there, clearly attempting to make the most of themselves. Also included, luckily, is an anti-goblin device. 89 pages, including a checklist to determine if you have goblins. The binding is padded. Published without a jacket, fully illustrated in color. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. more information

Metzner, Sheila

Inherit the Earth
New York, New York, U.S.A.: Bulfinch Press, 2000. No Edition. Hard Cover. New/No Jacket. Metzner, Sheila. These places are real. They are not a dream or figment of the imagination. They speak of endless transformation. Eons of construction and demolition. Independence and total dependency. Reproduction and unique formation. Power beyond cognition, scale and spectrum. 8) Revolutionaries of Realism: The Letters of John Sloan and Robert Henri
Perlman, Bennard B. (edited by)

Revolutionaries of Realism: The Letters of John Sloan and Robert Henri
Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.A.: Princeton Univ Press, 1997. First Edition. Hard Cover. New/New. Sloan, John; Henri, Robert . An introduction by Mrs. John Sloan is included. In the sata of American art's coming-of-age, Robert Henri and John Sloan stand tall among those in the vanguard of the campaign. These two major American artists were kindred spirits who maintained a special friendship throughout their lives, from the moment they met in 1892 until Henri's death 37 years later. This volume offers the first publication of the full correspondence between the two painters, capturing the opinions, work habits, and various traumas of Henri and Sloan, thus casting a new light on their lives and art. Many of the letters are illustrated with previously unpublished drawings - Henri's quickly sketched caricatures and Sloan's more carefully detailed compositions. As the leaders of the Ashcan School, they proclaimed that all life was fit subject matter for the artist, and organized a landmark exhibition of The Eight - a group that included Maurice Prendergast and Arthur B. Davies - in 1908. These letters also mention other prominent artists of the Henri-Sloan circle. 350 pages including a chronology and index. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

9) Stories for Little Comrades: Revolutionary Artists and the Making of Early Soviet Children's Books
Steiner, Evgeny; Miller, Jane Ann (translated by)

Stories for Little Comrades: Revolutionary Artists and the Making of Early Soviet Children's Books
Seattle, Washington, U.S.A.: Univ of Washington Pr, 1999. No Edition. Hard Cover. New/New. Drawings. In the Soviet Union of the 1920s, the most prominent avant-garde artists were eager children's book illustrators. Reaching a mass audience of unformed, malleable young people appealed to their commitment to an art manifesto based on the creation of a new kind of person for the revolutionary age. At the same time, good pay and a low risk of censorship were practical attractions. Basing his work almost completely on primary sources - Russian picture books from the Russian State Library, private collections and publishers' archives - Evgeny Steiner tells his story in deft prose with a wry sense of humor. The solidness of his sources, the range of his interests, and the depth of his understanding of Russian life combine to make this an unusually perceptive book on a fascinating cultural issue that combines the visual arts, literature, and politics. Bound in cloth, 214 pages, including brief biographies of authors, notes, and an index, this book is well-illustrated in color and black and white artwork. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

10) Hand Illustrated Postal Envelopes
Swales, David

Hand Illustrated Postal Envelopes
Bishop Auckland, County Durham, United Kingdom: Pentland Press Ltd, 1996. No Edition. Hard Cover. New/New. Photographs. In this beautiful and innovative book, David Swales studies hand-illustrated postal envelopes from their origins in the nineteenth century, to the lastest greatly enhanced forms, made possible by the use of modern materials, graphical styles and postal practices. Swales describes how the integration of clever ideas, good artwork and an appropriate choice of postal stamp into the design of an envelope illustration can result in an attractive or meaningful message of communication to send to a friend or loved one. All successful examples have, to some degree, and element of surprise for the recipient embodied in the illustration, and it is this quality more than any other which brings a lasting enjoyment and fascination to those who receive them and to those who produce them. Such envelopes can become collector's items and may also, in the future, become documents of considerable social worth. Bound in black cloth, these 87 pages reproduced on heavy glossy paper include over 100 hand illustrated envelopes, giving the reader an entertaining and instructive introduction to this art form. A list of artists or illustrators known to have produced these envelopes is included. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. more information

11) The Book Art of Lucien Pissarro: With a Bibliographical List of the Books of the Eragny Press, 1894-1914
Urbanelli, Lora S

The Book Art of Lucien Pissarro: With a Bibliographical List of the Books of the Eragny Press, 1894-1914
Kingston, Rhode Island, U.S.A.: Moyer Bell Ltd, 1997. No Edition. Hard Cover. New/New. Pissaro, Lucien. NEW - Lucien Pissaro, first son of the Impressionist artist Camille Pissaro, grew to find his own voice despite the clamorous orbit of artists around his father. As a young man Lucien was inspired by the work of Kate Greenaway; one can see the influence of his designs and illustrations of children's stories. He arrived in London just as the Arts and Crafts movement was gaining momentum. Lucien saw the opportunity to combine his love of book making and illustration and founded the Eragny Press, which ran from 1894 to 1914 and published 32 titles with more than 300 wood-engraved illustrations, borders, and fancy capitals. The press closed when WWI broke out but its legacy is a beautiful combination of French impressionistic interest in color and light and the English aesthetics of Arts and Crafts design. 127 pages, including a selected biography and list of Eragny publications. The books is well illustrated in color and black & white with designs from the Press books and other that Lucien created. The binding is 1/4 cloth, with the remaining done in a fan design. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. more information
