1) The Failure of the Founding Fathers: Jefferson, Marshall, and the Rise of Presidential Democracy
Ackerman, Bruce

The Failure of the Founding Fathers: Jefferson, Marshall, and the Rise of Presidential Democracy
Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A.: Belknap Press, 2005. First Edition. Hard Cover. New/New. The ink was barely dry on the Constitution when it was almost destroyed by the rise of political parties in the United States. As Bruce Ackerman shows, the Framers had not anticipated the two-party system, and when Republicans battled Federalists for the presidency in 1800, the rules laid down by the Constitution exacerbated the crisis. With Republican militias preparing to march on Washington, the House of Representatives deadlocked between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr. Based on seven years of archival research, this book describes previously unknown aspects of the electoral college crisis. Ackerman shows how Thomas Jefferson counted his Federalist rivals out of the House runoff, and how the Federalists threated to place John Marshall in the presidential chair. Nevertheless, the Constitution managed to survive through acts of statesmanship and luck. The transformation of the presidency serves as the basis for a new look at Marbury v. Madison, the case that first asserted the Supreme Court's power of judicial review. Ackerman shows that Marbury is best seen in combination with another case, Stuart v. Laird, as part of a retreat by the Court in the face of the plebiscitarian presidency. This "switch in time" proved crucial to the Court's survival, allowing it to integrage Federalist and Republican themes into the living Constitution of the early republic. 384 pages, including documents, notes, and an extensive index. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

Like No Other Time: The 107th Congress and the Two Years That Changed America Forever
New York, New York, U.S.A.: Crown Publishers, 2003. First Edition. Hard Cover. New/New. Photographs. The 107th Congress faced a time like no other in the life of the nation. This was the era of the first presidential election to be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court, the fifty-fifty senate, the horror of September 11, the anthrax attacks on media and the government (including Daschle's own office) the war on terrorism, corporate scandals that shook the economy, and other dramatic events, all leading up to the historic midterm election of 2002. Daschle offers a riveting account of his singular perspective on a time when the nation faced deadly and elusive external enemies and a level of domestic political contention rarely sen in American history. Senator Daschle is unflinching in his impressions of the key political figures of our time from both parties. 6) 20:21 Vision: Twentieth-Century Lessons for the Twenty-First Century
Emmott, Bill

20:21 Vision: Twentieth-Century Lessons for the Twenty-First Century
New York: Farrar Straus & Giroux, 2003. First Edition. Hard Cover. New/New. The attacks on September 11, 2001 shook the rich West out of its complacency; suddenly, peace seemed to be in peril. Already it had become clear that prosperity was endangered. How had it all happened? During the decade following the end of the cold war, prospects had looked so rosy; peace prevailed among the world's greatest powers, billions of people were joining the world market economy, and great waves of technological change were driving economies forward. Can we find a pattern in such possibility, confusion, and disappointment? What will the 21st century be like now? Bill Emmott, the Editor in Chief of the Economist, the world's leading current affairs weekly, answers these questions by looking back at the past, isolating the forrces that have shaped our world, and showing how they determine whether we are at peace or war, in a state of liberty or repression, in a period of prosperity or depression. He persuasively argues that two questions will matter above all others: Will American continue to lead the world and protect its peace? And will we continue to accept capitalism, with all its strengths and weaknesses, or will it be challenged once again? 371 pages including sources, selected biography, and index. The remainder mark is a dot on the bottom. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

7) Iraq: In the Eye of the Storm
Hiro, Dilip

New York, New York, U.S.A.: Thunder's Mouth Pr/Nations Books, 2002. First Edition. Soft Cover. New/No Jacket. George W. Bush could succeed where Osama bin Laden failed in provoking a clash of civilizations between Islam and the West by launching a "pre-emptive" attack on Iraq. This is one of the disturbing concludions to Iraq: IN the Eye of the Storm, a wide-ranging and thought provoking book by Middle East expert Dilip Hiro. He looks beyond the spin of the Bush administration and Saddam's Baathist regime to explore Iraq in all it's complexity - from the daily life of its people to its turbulent history and complex regional relations. While laying bare Saddam's cult of personality and his extensive intelligence apparatus, he details several unsuccessful attempts by the US-backed opposition to oust him. He provides an objective account of the performance of the UN inspectors, and matches the descriptions of Saddam's "cheat-and-retreat" tactics with Washingtons flagrant abuse of UN inspection in which personnel were used for espionage with the aim of overthrowing Saddam's government. 271 pages including notes, appendices and an index. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. more information

8) The Best of Times: America in the Clinton Years
Johnson, Haynes

Orlando, Florida, U.S.A.: Harcourt, Brace & Company, 2001. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. The Clinton Years - they were the best of times - and the worst. A time of unprecedented wealth, of breathtaking progress in technology, the world-changing internet, and the genome with the medical miracles it promised. Set against these triumphs was another America dominated by all-news TV and the gossip journalism of the Internet, driven by celebrity culture, lacking civility, racially divided, and presided over by our first Boomer leader, William Jefferson Clinton. For that first moment, when the white Bronco popped up on the nation's screens, O.J. was the ultimate TV story played out in excruciating detail. In telling that story, the author has much to say about violence, sex, race, and gossip in the media. Enter Monica, with the two witches of the tale, Linda Tripp and Lucy Goldberg, plotting to bring down the president while Vernon Jordan, the ultimate insider, works to save him. Besides these two great dramas, Johnson also writes of the Wall Street boom and the culture of instant dot-com wealth, of Hollywood and the rise of the mogul David Geffen, and concludes with an account of the Election of 2000, how the '90s made it inevitable. The product of four years of interviews with America's leaders in politics, business and science, is in the best tradition of timeless social history - a memorable portrait of the nation at a turning point. 610 pages including notes and sources, bibliography, and index. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information

I Protest
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1954. Stated First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Good. The informer is infiltrating American life at the national, state, and local level. He strikes at the heart of American freedom. He is a creature of the police state, an alien and malignant growth. Written in the foreword by Bishop G. 10) False Alarm: The Truth About The Epidemic Of Fear
Siegel MD, Marc

False Alarm: The Truth About The Epidemic Of Fear
Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley & Sons Inc, 2005. First Printing. Hard Cover. New/New. Mark Siegel is an articulate voice of reason in a world beset by hype and hysteria. We would be well advised to listen to listen closely to what he has to say."-Jerome Groopman, M.D., staff writer, The New Yorker. Life today for citizens of the developed world is far safer, easier, and healthier than for any other people in history. Modern medicine has all but wiped out many diseases that once were common killers. Modern intelligence gathering can pinpoint threats to our domestic security as they arise. So why is an epidemic of fear sweeping America? The answer, according to the author, is that we live in an artificially created culture of fear. From the anthrax panic to the SARS "epidemic," and the West Nile virus - the media continually bombard us with breaking news of yet another super-bug, terrorist plot, or natural disaster that's about to wreak havoc. Most of the time the disasters never materialize. Even if they did, the odds that any of us would suffer harm is infinitesimally small - especially when compared to the much greater risks of dying in a car accident of from heart disease. This book shows how fearmongers manipulate our most primitive instincts - often without our even realizing it - to promote their political agendas, boost their ratings, and sell their products. 246 pages including a bibliography and index. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. more information
