Working with the Dallas Museum of Art, they developed a long-term loan of the many Egyptian articles that Boston had no space to show. This catalog is a reprint of the Boston show, containing additional color images included in the Dallas exhibit. The topic embraces a broad spectrum of Egyptian life, and the Egyptians' beliefs about death and the dead. Through the study of actual mummies we can learn their ages at death, their medical and dental histories, and the diseases from which they suffered. The last category demonstrates how twentieth-century artists and designers incorporated the fantastic and even the irrational in their work. This is a beautiful book with full-color photographs depicting all types of fun designs of everything from a fish fork with the face of a fish, to furniture that imitates people. I found it hard to put down once I started paging through it. The binding is black with blue lettering pressed in on the cover and spine. 320 pages including notes and an index. This museum was intended to house two major works and is, therefore, not very big. But the beauty is in the design - one gets the feeling that there is light all around because the small building is made of varying amounts of translucent glass. This book shows not only photographs of the beautiful finished product, but of the steps taken and drawings of the proposed museum. It is tucked into a corner over which there is a tall building, but it is not affected by the building, nor the 8 lanes of expressway traffic zooming past (there's an amazing photo of this!). It is meant to be a place of quiet contemplation. A beautiful book, an interesting read, and a striking museum are all contained in this volume. This is a magnificient visual history of the circus parade as well as the first complete written history of the tradition. It brings together the very best and examples of the old circus wagons with the excitement and pageantry of contemporary artists, animals, and entertainers in the parade today. The book includes a vivid account of the Milwaukee Circus Parade and it's revival. This history is primarily from Wisconson's Circus World Museum in Baraboo, founded in 1954. Binding has very light wear at the corners and is a bit lightened at the top edges. It described the National Gallery of Art which is overseen by the Smithsonian Institute. It includes a description of each piece of artwork hung and many sculptures. This is more of an historical look at the Gallery since the book is almost 100 yrs. old, but it is still very interesting to those who enjoy exploring art and art history.The plates inside are covered with tissue paper.
