From the Calton Hill
Original watercolour heightened with white, signed and titled by the artist. Secondary presentation inscription and dating April 1925. 26.8cm x 18.8cm, on Whatman's Water Colour Sketching Board (10 5/8in x 71/2in) 8vo, Imperial. Inscribed in black ink on the back to the distinguished physical chemist, Professor Alan Wilfrid Cranbrook Menzies, and his wife Mary Isabella Dickson Menzies as: "To A. and M. from D. & B. a memento of April 19 - 26 - 1925." Titled and signed in watercolour paint by the artist on the front, lower left-hand corner as "from the Calton Hill John Blair." A very good depiction of smoky Edinburgh in good condition. A provocative meditation made from behind a cannon aimed at the heart of the City, with a lone female figure in the distance, her back turned on the view. Condition: There is the slightest hint of browning less that a half-centimeter from the edge from its original framing. more information
