The Cope

|
London, The Medici Society, 1930 First Edition: Very good original paper covered marble boards with an orange spine, gilt lettering to spine, cream dust jacket with blue titles and illustration, some edge wear in the form of chipping and rubbing, pale background darkened with age, not price clipped, SIGNED, dedication 'to Miss Legge with affectionate remembrance from Gertrude Bone,'' on front endpaper. 47 numbered pages. Charming black and white illustrations some with a single colour emphasis. 'The book is an evocation of the drama once underlying the making of a famous embroidery, faded now to a mere museum piece. As in some tapestry pictures the figures of a remoter age emerge from their dimness to confront us, and we step into the scene with them to share the human interest of the event in their cloister. The magic of a delicate art sustains the figures in motion until the story ending, they become static again and we leave the Cope frail and disused as before but with the meaning of its arabesques understood.' Delightful fantasy that brings this church embroidery to life. more information
