EZEKIEL'S HORSE
Univ of Texas Pr. New. 2000. 1st Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 0292712294. Brand new, in publisher's original cardboard carton. ; Folio 13" - 23" tall; Majestic, intelligent, sculptural: the horse is our partner in work and play and holds a unique place in the human psyche. In this, his eighth book, East Texas photographer Carter photographs horses and their domains in his characteristically unsentimental yet timeless manner. Including the occasional kinetic image of sculptures, Carter avoids the typical cuteness reserved for pictures of these animals. He presents horses as resolute, serious, powerful, and sincere, like figures remembered from a dream. Carter manipulates focus so that details are revealed and obscured selectively, a technique heightened by his deft use of tone and grain. The result is a series of 75 resonant and striking black-and-white images in homage to this beast. The book design is remarkable: full pages are devoted to each image, with titles prominently displayed opposite. Interspersed throughout are brief quotes about horses from various spiritual and cultural texts.. more information

PEOPLE I SLEEP WITH
Ten Speed Press. 2004. Hardcover. ISBN: 1580086349. Brand new; DJ may have slight ding. ; In a G-rated volume with an R-rated name, photographer Fineberg takes an intimate look at "those we let into our beds" by snapping black-and-white pictures of people napping with their pets. Fineberg gives her subjects a two-page spread: one page offers a series of small, seemingly preparatory shots (a cat mincing her away along a bed, for example) , while the facing page reveals the real snoozing action (the same cat, joined by more cats and a few dogs, lying on a bed with her human companions) . Happily, Fineberg goes beyond cats and dogs: she captures a man dozing in the dirt with two donkeys, a boy napping with his pet scorpion and a woman sleeping with her 125-pound potbellied pig. Some of the photos seem too staged--Can that lady really be sleeping while that gecko's sitting on her face? --but they're charming nevertheless.. more information

Boston Mills Press. New/New. 2001. Hardcover. ISBN: 1550463306. Rites of Passage, a look at over three decades of transition and changes along Canada's rail lines, is his most personal book to date. "For what it's worth, " McDonnell writes in his introductory essay, "what follows on these pages is personal, a collection of images and essays drawn from a 35-year effort to capture and chronicle the magic of Canadian railroading, an effort that began with a young boy pointing a borrowed Brownie at a pair of olive-green GMD1's looming out of the early morning fog in Kitchener and quickly grew to be a lifetime avocation, if not a vocation. " Rites of Passage is vintage McDonnell, a sensual feast of boiler steam and diesel smoke, high iron and midnight runs across the prairies, wistful memories and critical analysis.. more information
