John Wellborn Root: A Study of His Life and Work
Boston: Houghton, Mifflin & Company, 1896. Covers detached. Efforts were made in the past to repair or reinforce the book. A well-worn, ex-library copy with several stamps or writing to indicate ex-lib. This is a very scarce first edition of the biography of architect John Wellborn Root. Though Root's years were short, 1850-1891, his list of accomplishments in the field of architecture and development of Chicago, in particular, are many. Root's architectural designs helped establish Chicago as the birthplace of modern architecture. He helped in the rebuilding of the city after the Great Fire of 1871, teaming up with partner Daniel H. Burnham to form Burnham and Root, considered one of the most important companies in architecture history. Their partnership endured for 18 years, during which they designed more than 300 buildings, many in Chicago's loop. Among Root's designs were two of the finest examples of the Chicago school of design: the Rookery Building and the Monadnock Block. Although the book is poor condition, it is complete, readable, and offers many illustrations (etchings) of Root's work. 291 pages, with Appendixes and Index. Appendix A: John Wellborn Root, by Henry Van Brunt (an article reprinted from The Inland Architect and News Record, January 1891); Appendix B: List of Buildings Designed and Erected by Burnham & Root. Illustrated with many etchings and drawings, including a frontispiece portrait of John Root.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Poor/No Jacket. Ex-Library.
