One scratch in image noted in tallest evergreen on right, some toning/browning to sky region. Otherwise very good condition. An aquatint etching of Niagara Falls titled "This General view from the English Ferry is by Special Permission Dedicated to Her Most Excellent Majesty Queen Victoria". This image is taken from a drawing by Lt. Col. Cockburn, and was engraved by Edge and published in London in 1857 by Ackermann & Co., 96 Strand. Condition - These are the second edition of his prints, issued in 1857 and dedicated to Queen Victoria. The first edition prints were published in 1833 and were dedicated to King William IV Edge, John, engraver, active circa 1833-1857. , "A very fine general view of the one of the greatest natural wonders of the world, taken from `amongst the finest depictions of [the Falls]‹ ever recorded'"(Spendlove)., "This excellent view includes both the Horse-shoe Falls and the American Falls, with Goat Island between. The print gives a true impression of the immense size of the falls, of the enormous power of the falling water, and also of the stupefying noise. The `noise of this cataract has often been the object of admiration. We heard it distinctly when crossing the ferry at the distance of eighteen miles; the wind blowing from the north-west almost at right angles with the direction of the sound. Two gentlemen who had lived sometime at York [Toronto], on the north side of Lake Ontario‹ informed me, that it was not unfrequently heard there. The distance is fifty miles." (E.A.Talbot Five Years Residence in the Canadas 1824). Cockburn, James Pattison, 1778-1847, a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Artillery, was posted to Canada from 1826 to 1836 during which time he made a number of drawing of North American scenes including of Niagara Falls. Six of Cockburn's images of the Falls were made into a superb set of large folio aquatints, first issued in 1833 and dedicated to King William IV. These prints were sold in England and North America, including being marketed as souvenirs at Niagara Falls itself. The prints were reissued in 1857, this time dedicated to Queen Victoria. Cockburn's prints are amongst the most desirable and well produced images of this famous scene. Aquatints. Hand color. Cf. Eland: 127; Seibel: 22a. Read More

Paris: Recueil Contenant Cartes Nouvelles, 1755c. 1st. No binding. Good. Condition: B Color: hand color Size: 19.5 x 24.3 inches, 49.6 x 61.8 cm There is a small, unobtrusive hole in a blank area near Cape Cod and some short tears in the margins and the centerfold. The map has been backed with 18th century paper, apparently for binding into a composite atlas. The backing repairs all the flaws. , , This important map was issued at the outbreak of hostilities in the French and Indian War. The American interests of France, England and Spain are shown in great detail and color-coded. Fort Duquesne is shown in two different places on the map - according to D'Anville and also to Jefferys. A large inset shows the upper Mississippi River valley with the important frontier forts. A smaller inset shows the lower Mississippi and Gulf Coast. A small vignette of Niagara Falls adds further interest to this fascinating map. This is the first state of four. The later issues have revised titles. Ref: McCorkle #755.23; Sellers and Van Ee #33.
