1) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Adams, Douglas (Jacket illustration by: Peter Cross.)

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
New York: Harmony Books [date not known], Book Club Edition. (Hardcover) *.*.*.*.*Good in Good dust jacket. *.*.*.*.* 209pp. *.*.*.*.* *.*.*.*.* The book and the dust jacket show light shelf wear. *.*.*.*.* In The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy the characters visit the legendary planet Magrathea, home to the now-collapsed planet building industry, and meet Slartibartfast, a planetary coastline designer who was responsible for the fjords of Norway. Through archival recordings, he relates the story of a race of hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional beings who built a computer named Deep Thought to calculate the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. When the answer was revealed as 42, Deep Thought predicts that another computer, more powerful than itself would be made and designed by it to calculate the question for the answer. The computer, often mistaken for a planet (because of its size and use of biological components), was the Earth, and was destroyed by Vogons to make way for a hyperspatial express route, five minutes before the conclusion of its 10-million-year program. Two of a race of hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional beings who commissioned the Earth in the first place, disguise themselves as Trillian's mice, and want to dissect Arthur's brain to help reconstruct the question, since he was part of the earth's matrix moments before it was destroyed, and so he is likely to have part of the question buried in his brain. Trillian is also human but had left Earth six months previously with Zaphod Beeblebrox, President of the Galaxy. The protagonists escape, setting course for "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe". The mice, in Arthur's absence, create a phony question since it is too troublesome for them to wait 10 million years again just to cash in on a lucrative deal. Their new question was "How many roads must a man walk down?" The book was adapted from the first four radio episodes. It was first published in 1979, initially in paperback, by Pan Books. *.*.*.*.* A scan of the cover is available. *.*.*.*.* Jacket illustration by: Peter Cross.. (more information)

Gunnar knows that the New European outpost has not been destroyed - but the fate of the besieged colony hangs on the decision of a hostile and passive World Federation, dedicated to peace at any price. Or does it? Rataplan! Rataplan! Rataplan-plan-plan-plan! sings his Hungarian minstrel, as Gunnar's ensuing encounters - with a still-operative Slaughter Machine on Staurn, with the ships of the Aleriona, and with two women he once loved - provide a vivid and fast moving rendezvous in outer space. *.*.*.*.* Also writes as A. 5) A Knight of Ghosts and Shadows
Anderson, Poul (Also writes as A. A. Craig, and Michael Karageorge, and Winston P. Saunders) (Jacket illustration by: Chet Jezierski.)

A Knight of Ghosts and Shadows
Nelson Doubleday 1974, Book Club Edition. (Hardcover) *.*.*.*.*Good in Good dust jacket. *.*.*.*.* 184pp. *.*.*.*.* *.*.*.*.* The book shows little wear, there is a light stain on the bottom closed edge. The dust jacket is worn on the edges with some fading and is yellowing. *.*.*.*.* Sir Dominic Flandry, Knight in Earth's Imperial Space Navy, gazed at the many pinpricks of light that filled the viewscreen of his starship. This important bit of Imperial space held an estimated four million solar systems. Maybe half of those had been visited at least once. About a hundred thousand worlds of theirs belonged to the Terran Empire, though for most planets the connection was tenuous. There were too many environments, races, cultures and lives. No mind, no government could know the whole, let alone cope. Nevertheless that sprawl of planets, peoples and provinces had to cope somehow - or see the dreaded Long Night fall. Barbarians, who had gotten spaceships and nuclear weapons too early in their history, prowled just outside the Terran borders - waiting for an opportune moment to attack and bring new worlds under their domination. Flandry adjusted the screen controls again, zeroing in on the Taurian sector, one of the outermost galaxies under Terran protection. This was where his next mission would lead him. Trouble was brewing on the planet Dennitza - one of the most populous, wealthy and highly advanced worlds in the system. Secret reports brought word of a fanatical underground army planning a large scale rebellion and secession from the Empire. It would be up to Flandry to stop the movement dead in its tracks. But that was a tall order. Not even Flandry, with his vast knowledge of alien ways and customs, could hope to fathom the deadly secrets of that fringe world. He needed help . . . and he got it from a beautiful Dennitzian slave girl, Kossara, who'd been taken captive during a previous, unsuccessful rebellion. Unwilling to aid him at first, Kossara eventually fell victim to Flandry's charms. It seemed quite a victory for his ego, but deep down Flandry knew that anyone with a just cause to fight for would have resisted to the death. Kossara had obviously been intricately brainwashed - conditioned to hate and fight against the Empire. But by whom? Was it someone on Dennitza, or perhaps a subversive group on one of the neighboring planets, Diomedes or Chereion? Or could it be that some totally unknown intelligence was chipping away at the Terran Empire from within as well as without? That was the question to be answered and dealt with quickly. If it weren't, Flandry knew it would only be a matter of time before all the civilized planet systems were reduced to nothing but atomic rubble . . . *.*.*.*.* Also writes as A. A. Pocket [date not known]. (Oversized paperback) *.*.*.*.*Good. *.*.*.*.* *.*.*.*.* *.*.*.*.* Some light spine and cover wear and creasing. *.*.*.*.* *****"Space . . . the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations - to boldly go where no man has gone before . . . " On September 8, 1966, those now-familiar words first introduced an entire generation of television viewers to STAR TREK. Over the course of its three-year network run, the show developed a fan following unprecedented in entertainment history - a following that is still growing with the release of each new STAR TREK motion picture. Much of the show's appeal came from its blueprint for the future - a future where man had put aside his differences to reach the stars. STAR TREK gave us a Russian and an American working side-by-side, television's first interracial kiss, the name for America's first space shuttle - Enterprise - and a host of unforgettable characters: the unflappable Captain Kirk, his half-human science officer Spock, the irascible Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy, and ever-resourceful engineer Montgomery Scott, to name but a few. THE STAR TREK COMPENDIUM is your official guidebook to the STAR TREK universe. Relive the voyages of the starship Enterprise with a complete show-by-show guide to the series (as well as the Emmy Award-winning animated shows and the STAR TREK movies), including plot summaries, fascinating behind-the-scenes production information, and credits for each. Follow the creation of Gene Roddenberry's series step-by-step - and STAR TREK's road to the big screen. Illustrated with over 125 specially selected photographs - including at least one from each episode - and fully indexed, this is the indispensable reference work to one of the most memorable television shows of all time - STAR TREK.***** *.*.*.*.* A scan of the cover is available.. 12) Fantastic Voyage
Asimov, Isaac (Also writes as Dr. A., and George E. Dale, and the Good Doctor, and Paul French, and H. B. Ogden) (Based on the work of Jay Lewis Bixby; Otto Klement; Screenplay by Harry Kleiner.)

Fantastic Voyage
Houghton Mifflin [circa 1966], Book Club Edition. (Hardcover) *.*.*.*.*Good in Good dust jacket. *.*.*.*.* 239pp. *.*.*.*.* *.*.*.*.* The book and dust jacket show only light shelf wear. The pages are yellowing. *.*.*.*.* Movie tie-in. *.*.*.*.* FANTASTIC VOYAGE is a science fiction film written by Harry Kleiner. Bantam Books obtained the rights for a paperback novelization based on the screenplay and approached Isaac Asimov to write it. Because the novelization was released six months before the movie, many people mistakenly believed Asimov's book had inspired the movie. The United States and the Soviet Union have both developed technology that allowed matter to be miniaturized using a process that shrinks individual atoms, but its value is limited because objects shrunk return to normal size after a period of time - the smaller an object is made, the quicker it reverts. Scientist Jan Benes, working behind the Iron Curtain, has figured out how to make the shrinking process work indefinitely. With the help of the CIA, he escapes to the West, but an attempted assassination leaves him comatose, with a blood clot in his brain. To save his life, Charles Grant (the agent who extracted him), pilot Captain Bill Owens, Dr. Michaels, surgeon Dr. Peter Duval and his assistant Cora Peterson board a submarine, the Proteus, which is then miniaturized and injected into Benes. The ship is reduced to one micrometre in length, giving the team only one hour to repair the clot; after that, the submarine will begin to revert to its normal size and become large enough for Benes' immune system to detect and attack. The crew faces many obstacles on their journey. They are forced to detour through the heart (a temporary cardiac arrest must be induced to avoid destructive turbulence), the inner ear (all in the lab must remain quiet to prevent similar turbulence) and the alveoli of the lungs (where they replenish their supply of oxygen). When the surgical laser needed to destroy the clot is damaged, it becomes obvious there is a saboteur on the mission. They cannibalize their radio to repair the laser. When they finally reach the brain clot, there are only six minutes remaining to operate and then exit the body. The traitor, Dr. Michaels, knocks Owens out and takes control of the Proteus while the rest of the crew is outside for the operation. He then tries to run them down, but crashes and is trapped in the wreckage. After Duval successfully removes the clot, they swim desperately to one of the eyes, to escape via a teardrop. Michaels is killed when he grows large enough for white blood cells to detect and attack him. *.*.*.*.* Also writes as Dr. A., and George E. Dale, and the Good Doctor, and Paul French, and H. B. Ogden. *.*.*.*.* Based on the work of Jay Lewis Bixby & Otto Klement. A scan of the cover is available. *.*.*.*.* Screenplay by Harry Kleiner.. (more information)

28) Planet of the Apes
Boulle, Pierre (Translated by: Xan Fielding.)

Planet of the Apes
Vanguard [date not known], Book Club Edition. (Hardcover) *.*.*.*.*Good in Good dust jacket. *.*.*.*.* 191pp. *.*.*.*.* *.*.*.*.* The book and dust jacket show light shelf wear. The pages and covers are yellowed. There is some bumping at the base of the spine. *.*.*.*.* Planet of the Apes is a story inside a story, set in the year 2500. Jinn and Phyllis, a wealthy leisured couple traveling in space, find a handwritten manuscript in a bottle floating through the void. It tells in the spirit of Gulliver's Travels about Ulysse Mérou, a French journalist. He lands on another planet, where the apes are intelligent. Humans, who have lost the power of language and thought, are exhibited in zoos. Chimpanzees, gorillas, and orang-utans all have equal rights. Humans are used as guinea pigs in laboratories. Some of the planet's scientists refuse to acknowledge that an animal has a soul, while according to another view there is only a difference of degree between the mental processes of beasts and those of monkeys. Mérou speaks at a scientific congress and tells the astonished audience: "... I come from a distant planet, from Earth, that Earth on which, by a whim of nature that has still to be explained, it is men who are the repositories of wisdom and reason." The book differs in many ways from the film. When Boulle wanted to question our superiority over other animals, the film reveals in the climax the past and destroyed glory of humankind, symbolized by the ruined, half-buried remains of the Statue of Liberty. Charlton Heston ends the film with his cry: "Damn them all to hell!" In the book Mérou returns finally to Earth, and is received at the airport by a gorilla. Another twist of the tale is that Jinn and Phyllis are chimpanzees and consider the story incredible: "Rational men? Men endowed with a mind? Men inspired by intelligence? No, that's not possible; there the author has gone too far. But it's a pity!" *.*.*.*.* A scan of the cover is available. *.*.*.*.* Translated by: Xan Fielding.. (more information)

Millennium: A Novel About People and Politics in the Year 1999 (Series Kinsmen Saga 2.)
Random House [circa 1976], Book Club Edition. (Hardcover) *.*.*.*.*Good in Good dust jacket. *.*.*.*.* 249pp. *.*.*.*.* *.*.*.*.* The book and dust jacket show light shelf wear. The pages and covers are yellowed. *.*.*.*.* We are thrust into the terrifying world of the future in this chilling novel about people and politics in the year 1999. The Earth's population has soared to eight billion. The two major powers are on the brink of nuclear war as they vie for control of the planet's dwindling supply of natural resources. Meanwhile, a few hundred kilometers above the Earth's surface, on their respective Moon colonies, the United States and the Soviet Russia feverishly race to complete networks of ABM satellites to protect themselves from missile attack. Each side knows that if it can complete its own satellite AMB network before the other side does, the decades-long nuclear stalemate of terror will be broken. A decisive advantage would be obtained. A preemptive nuclear strike could be hurled at the enemy, with the ABM satellites blunting the inevitable counterstrike. Two men are deeply involved in this potential holocaust: the heads of the American and Russian colonies. Fortunately, for the sake of humanity, they are both idealistic men of good will, determined to work together to establish a world in which co-existence is possible. How they accomplish this, the forces that are thrown against them, and whether or not each man himself survives is the dramatic story of MILLENNIUM. *.*.*.*.* Also writes as Oxford Williams. *.*.*.*.* A scan of the cover is available. *.*.*.*.* Series Kinsmen Saga 2..
