My Life--In Spite of Myself!
Very Good.. Paperback. Mass-market paperback 1995 Pocket Books. Has REMAINDER MARK inside front cover. Unread; superclean; uncreased. 239pp, B/W photos. Language: English. 'This book is genial, good fun, and just what one would expect from Clark. His story is one of rags to riches, although he prefers not to dwell on the poverty of his young years but to highlight the spiritual wealth of his family relationships, his music, and the patchwork of unique opportunities that led to stardom. Noted as host for the CBS television show Hee-Haw , Clark offers amusing anecdotes about the show's colorful characters. Many names from country music and television also weave through his clever recollections. Clark also treats readers to glimpses of his hobbies, investments, and major ventures (such as his ownership of a show palace in Branson, Missouri). Clark does not dwell on his negative experiences but touches upon them philosophically and moves on to more positive times. This is entertaining reading by an entertaining performer.'--Carol J. Music's Modern Muse: A Life of Winnaretta Singer, Princesse de Polignac (Eastman Studies in Music)

New. Brand-new hardcover with dustjacket, published 2003 by University of Rochester Press. Unopened, unread; still in publisher's shrinkwrap. 576 pages. Language: English. 'The American-born Winnaretta Singer (1865-1943) was a millionaire at the age of eighteen, due to her inheriting a substantial part of the Singer Sewing Machine fortune. Her 1893 marriage to Prince Edmond de Polignac, an amateur composer, brought her into contact with the most elite strata of French society. After Edmond's death in 1901, she used her fortune to benefit the arts, science, and letters. Her most significant contribution was in the musical domain: in addition to subsidizing individual artists (Boulanger, Haskil, Rubinstein, Horowitz) and organizations (the Ballets Russes, l'Opera de Paris, l'Orchestre Symphonique de Paris), she made a lifelong project of commissioning new musical works from composers, many of them unknown and struggling, to be performed in her Paris salon. The list of works created as a result is long and extraordinary: Stravinsky's Renard, Satie's Socrate, Falla's El Retablo de Maese Pedro, and Poulenc's Two-Piano and Organ Concertos are among the best-known titles. In addition, her salon was a gathering place for luminaries of French culture such as Proust, Cocteau, Monet, Diaghilev, and Colette.'--from the publisher. 36) Ella Fitzgerald: A Biography of the First Lady of Jazz
Nicholson, Stuart

Good.. Hardcover. Stated 1st U.S. edition HARDCOVER with dustjacket 1994 Scribners. Clean. NOTICEABLE WEAR to jacket. Has REMAINDER MARK at bottom. 234pp, Index, Notes, Discography by Phil Schaap, B/W photos. Language: English. NOTE: Large size; cannot ship outside U.S. via Flat-Rate envelope. 'Most of the great jazz and popular singers have been able to invest the songs they sing with an autobiographical subtext. Billie Holiday did it; so did Frank Sinatra and many others. But not Ella Fitzgerald. As British critic Nicholson explains it in this engaging biography, you got a package deal of subjectivity and song with Holiday or Sinatra. With Ella you got only the song. This sounds like criticism, and in a way it is, but Nicholson makes us understand Ella's emotional distance from her material in terms of both her technical mastery and her acute embarrassment about her past--when discovered by Chick Webb in the 1930s, she was literally living on the streets of New York. Ella didn't want to tell a story with her songs; she wanted to swing, and that she did through more than 50 years of recording and performing. Nicholson ably chronicles it all--offering interesting reassessments of the lightly regarded Milt Gabler period with Decca records and the more-celebrated Norman Granz years with Verve and Pablo. This is a well-researched, gracefully written biography, stronger on musical analysis than on psychological insight--just as Ella would want it.'--Bill Ott, Booklist. more information

43) The Sex Revolts: Gender, Rebellion, and Rock 'N' Roll
Reynolds, Simon; Press, Joy

Like New.. Hardcover. 1st U.S. edition 1995 Harvard University Press. Superclean; no marks; pages bright; binding tight; appears unread. Only light shelfwear. Gift-giving condition. 410pp, Index, Notes, Bibliography. Language: English. NOTE: Cannot ship outside U.S. via Global Priority -- Surface or Airmail only. 'Gender is at the core of rock. In this music (historically created by males), the tension of love, lust, and hate between the sexes is a central issue. In addition, rock, from its inception, has challenged the validity of culturally imposed sex roles. Journalists Reynolds (Melody Maker, New York Times) and Press (Spin, Village Voice) address these issues determinedly and knowledgeably. Methodizing gender motifs within male-created rock, they contrast a snarling misogyny (e.g., the Rolling Stones) with an awe-captured, oceanic mother-worship (e.g., Pink Floyd). Especially provocative is the authors' taxonomy of role imagery among female rockers: tomboy rebel, riot grrl, mysterious masquerader, vulnerable confessor. ... Revolts emerges as the only complete analysis of gender in rock music. The writing is intelligent, evocative, and engaging, rich in thought without becoming ponderous. Even those readers who question the authors' nervy paradigms will find this an authoritative, comprehensive history of rock. Thorough, unique, and challenging.... Highly recommended.'--Bill Piekarski, Library Journal, 1995. more information

NOTE: Cannot ship outside U.S. via Global Priority -- Surface or Airmail only. 'For his 14th book, the best writer among living American composers collects pieces mostly written to fulfill commissions--as is most of his music, he loves to remind us--and 3 interviews. Two-thirds of the essays are about music and musicians; the rest, about literature. The interviews saliently include Rorem's conversation with waspish critic John Simon about the latter's reputed homophobia and, in something of an about-face, gay-activist physician Larry Mass' with Rorem about his reticence to consider homosexuality as an influence on art, especially opera, and modern audiences. Everywhere, Rorem attractively demonstrates his strengths as a memorable and amusing commentator on culture. Chief among those strengths are the fearlessness with which he characterizes an artist's style, content, and attitude, and his ability to crystallize the leitmotivs of his analysis into apothegms that are as applicable to our common life as to the life of art--We are what we repeat, for example, and Wit stems from irony, not situation. And then there is his charm.'--Ray Olson, Booklist. more information
