1) UNKNOWN SOLDIERS - BY ONE OF THEM

Vantage, Neew York, (1959), Ist edition.. 170 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "...recreates incidents tragic, comic, horrifying, bawdy, shameful - being spattered with shreds of flesh, blood, and bone, when a shell blotted out a comrade; the horrors of being shelled in caving trenches . (this was World War I); the sickness from living in cold, mud, and rain; and the sufferings of civilians as the author saw them in France. Despite the discomforts and boredom, the illness and wounds, he found, as soldiers in every army have, a rele. ase from tension in grim humour, the sort of comfort available (so very available) in all-too-willing female company (he pulls no punches in his comments on sex mores in several countries), and joy in the comradeship of his fellow soldiers. He . o f f e rs trenchant observations regarding officers in general, the foot soldier, relationships between the men of the varied armies who fought as allies, and, of course, the enemy, the 'Jerries'..." Very light browning to pages, light edge wear t. o bo ar ds , light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, closed tears - some taped, small chips, heavy rubbing, light browning and light fading to spine color, protected in a mylar sleeve. VG/Fair. more information

A.S. Barnes, New York, (1969).. 155 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps. "After more than four years of the most fearful war in the world's history, the end came almost unexpectedly, with dramatic suddenness. At five o'clock on the morning of November 11, 1918,. Marshal Foch and Admiral Wemyss, representing the Allies, concluded an armistice with German civil and military representatives. There had been a general expectation that the war would last well into 1919. The author...examines the various fa. c t o r s that led to the earlier conclusion of the war. He analyzes conditions in the summer of 1918 following Ludendorff's massive offensive in March...also probes the plans of the Central Powers, the Allies, and the American Expeditionary Forces. , em ph as izing the range of disagreements on the methods by which German could be defeated. He then goes on to consider the first and second phases of the Allied offensives of August 1918, which at last cracked German resistance. Finally the Arm. is tic e i tse lf is studied in detail. The penultimate chapter, which comments on military operations, includes the bizarre account of the Kaiser's unheralded arrival in Holland..." 9) MORALE: A STUDY OF MEN AND COURAGE. THE SECOND SCOTTISH RIFLES AT THE BATTLE OF NEUVE CHAPELLE 1915
Baynes, John

MORALE: A STUDY OF MEN AND COURAGE. THE SECOND SCOTTISH RIFLES AT THE BATTLE OF NEUVE CHAPELLE 1915
Cassell, London, 1967.. 286 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Ex-library. B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "Morale is as important to a nation in peace as it is in war, on the factory floor and in an office as in a warship or a bomber's crew, in a trade . union as in a regiment. In our complex, unstable times, it is vital that we should seek to understand more of morale, what it can attain and how it can be achieved. For this reason alone John Bayne's fascinating sociological study would be an inva. luable contribution to the literature of an alarmingly neglected subject. But Major Baynes has a uique and rewarding approach. He has taken a sample community of proven morale and then dissected it tissue by tissue, examining each under the micr. o s cope of his keenly analytical and lively mind. His 'sample' is the 2nd Scottish Rifles, a battalion of that magnificent professional Army with which Britain entered the First World War. At the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March, 1915, when it w. en t 'over the top' it was some 900 strong. Six days later the battalion marched out of the line, still a fighting, disciplined unit. It was 150 strong and was commanded by a second-lieutenant. What enabled those men to keep their spirit, their t. ena ci ty and dash in those awful six days, so graphically recreated here, was their morale. Major Baynes has interviewed the know survivors of the battle and analysed hundreds of books, reports and private papers pertinent to his 'sample'. He exa. mine s t he social background of the officers and men, their service, their homes, their education, upbringing, beliefs and attitudes. With the advantage of hindsight, he has evaluated their inter-relationships, their loyalties, and the rules and c. onven tion s by which they lived. The result is a stimulating book, important in areas far removed from the bloody fields of Flanders." Ex-library copy with some of the usual stamps, old tape and pocket removal marks, three areas of light dampness. marks on f ront board and hinge, free front endpaper missing, a few pages with dog-ear creases, five lines of text on page 92 have green hi-liter. Penguin, London, 2001, reprint.. 310 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), soft cover. ISBN 0141390875 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "With the call to action stations of August 1914, the Royal Navy faced its greatest test since the time of Nelson. Geoffrey Bennett's classic history of the. Great War at sea combines graphic and stirring accounts of all the principal naval engagements - battles overseas, in home waters and, for the first time, under the sea - with analysis of the strategy and tactics of both sides. He bring these sea. battles dramatically to life, and confirms the Allied navies' vital contribution to victory. In his words, 'Though the titantic struggle on the Western Front dominated the strategy of the Allies, it was their Navies, of which the British was immea. s urably the strongest, that in the end brought Germany to her knees.' Illustrated with maps, plans and contemporary photographs, this detailed, immaculately researched account is the authoritative history of an often overlooked but hugely importan. t aspect of the First World War." "On a chill Easter Monday in 1917, with a blizzard blowing in their faces, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in France did what neither. the British nor the French armies had been able to do in more than two years of fighting. They seized and held the best-defended German bastion on the Western Front - a muddy scarp known as the Vimy Ridge. The French, who had lost 150,000 men t. r y ing to take the ridge, didn't believe it could be done. Nor did the Germans; even the British were skeptical. But the Canadians triumphed. "The capture of the impregnable Vimy Ridge by the 100,000 men of the Canadian Corps brought Canada instant recognition and significantly c. ontributed to Canada's status as a nation. The well-planned and executed military success became the byword for the Canadians and was a characteristic that led to an undefeated record in the last two years of the war. The price of success was hi. g h , with more than 3,600 men killed on April 9, 1917 alone. Vimy became synonymous with the Canadians and 'their front' for more than 18 months. During that period more than 19,000 Canadians died and their bodies lied buried in the fields and vi. ll ag es near Vimy. Christie, N.M. Edited by S. Hickman

THE CANADIANS AT PASSCHENDAELE, OCTOBER TO NOVEMBER 1917: A SOCIAL HISTORY AND BATTLEFIELD TOUR. FOR KING AND EMPIRE, VOLUME IV
Bunker to Bunker, Winnipeg, MB, 1996.. 81 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 0969903970 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans, fold-out map at rear. "The Battle of Passchendaele was the bloodiest and most futile battle of the First World War. Lasting from August to November 1917, it cost the Co. mmonwealth more than 250,000 soldiers - killed, wounded or missing - for an advance of less than six kilometres. The losses were sadly typical of the Great War, but it was the repulsive conditions of soldiers attacking through knee-deep morass and. the wounded drowning in the mud which gave Passchendaele its legacy as 'Hell'. The Canadians entered the battle in mid-October and, between October 26 and November 10, launched four major attacks, finally capturing the village of Passchendaele and. a piece of the ridge beyond. Grange, London, 1996, reprint.. 214 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1856279065 B&w photographs. "These echoes from the early days of tank warfare give an idea of the crucial role that tanks played in breaking the murderous stalemate on the Western Fron. t. This influence was acknowledged by friend and foe alike and, while not decisive, it certainly hastened the end of that dreadful conflict, saving thousands of Allied lives and ushering in a new era of mechanised warfare. (The editor) draws hi. s m aterial exclusively from the archives of the world famous Tank Museum at Bovington Camp, Dorset. His linking narrative guides us through the war, battle by battle, from 15 September 1916 to the Armistice, using firsthand accounts of the tank a. ct i on s, extracts from unit war diaries and other primary sources. Many of these accounts are previously unpublished or have had limited circulation, providing us with a fresh and vivid insight into the early days of tank warfare. A wealth of or. igi na l p hotographs showing the tanks and their crews both in action and at rest support these vivid accounts. Their relevance is further enhanced by a selection of contemporary aerial reconnaissance photographs revealing the topography of the la. ndsc ape ove r which many of the battles were fought." KAISER BILL
Wayland, (Hove, 1978), first edition.. 96 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated in b&w with photographs, reproductions, map. "Commonly blamed as the man who started World War I, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany is often seen as a tough aggressor; a man, as Bi. smarck might have said, 'of blood and iron'. As leader of the world's strongest army, he wielded great power. When, at the beginning of this century, he built up an almost equally strong navy, it seemed as if nothing could stop Germany's advanc. e s . But was he really the strong man of popular legend? Richard Garrett argues that, behind the stern appearance and the flamboyant moustache, Kaiser Bill was a failure. He believed that God had appointed him Emperor of Germany and that God wo. ul d te ll him what to do. His talent for making enemies was enormous. He had grown up as a spoilt child with a wide knowledge of many things and a deep understanding of almost nothing; and yet his arrogant faith in himself never faltered. This i. s t he st ory of the effect of one man on thirty years of world history, culminating in a monstrous clash of arms and ending in the quietness of exile. Out of the story a picture of the real man emerges, and the events which led up to the disaster. are pu t in to their true perspective. Was it the Kaiser, more than anyone else, who unwittingly prepared the way for Hitler? This book may suggest an answer." dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, very light browning, small corner crease . on fr ont flap. VG+/VG. more information

Penguin, London, 1990.. 620 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 0140058028 "Selections from the letters, memoirs, autobiographies and fiction of the First World War. Edmund Blunden, Vera Brittain, Oskar Kokoschka, Willa Cather, Jaroslav Hasek, Paul Klee and Ernest Hemingway . are among the contributors to this remarkable anthology, which contains several translations commissioned especially for it and draws from Britain, Europe and America. Nearly all of the authors participated in the Great War, whether in battle or, l. ike Rebecca West, on the home front. Most would probably have agreed with Conrad who, when asked what he believed would happen after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, replied, 'Nothing....It fitted with my ethical sense that an act cruel . a n d absurd should be also useless'. (The editors) have arranged their selection to trace and record an evolving sense of the War's moral, political and emotional impact. 'For all the writers War seems to have been an intensifying experience out. o f wh ich they asked what values, if any, inhered in human life.
