1) GREENBANK: COUNTRY MATTERS IN 19TH CENTURY ONTARIO
Graham, W.H

GREENBANK: COUNTRY MATTERS IN 19TH CENTURY ONTARIO
Broadview Press, (Peterborough, Ont., 1988).. 326 pp, 4to (11" H), soft cover. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Using the fascinating histories of four neighbouring farms as its focus, (this) book broadens to explore all aspects of the social and economic history of rural Ontario over the hun. dred years 1835 to 1935. It details the development of agriculture and the decline in pioneer energy in the third and fourth generations; it describes the creation of a system of formal education from scratch; it brings to life the sports, music. a n d other forms of 19th century Ontario recreation; and captures the flavour of daily custom and routine. A recurring theme is the harsh ethic of evangelicalism, which surfaced dramatically in the temperance movement and in attitudes toward ente. r ta in ment, sex, and the place of women in society. All this is woven in with the often amusing, often deeply moving stories of the remarkable individuals who inhabited the microcosm of Greenbank." "Catharine Parr Traill and Susanna Moodie are icons of the Canadian imagination. Yet most of what we know of these two English gentlewomen who spent th. eir adult lives struggling to survive in Britain's hardscrabble colony comes from their own self-consciously crafted writings and from other writers' often fanciful depictions of them. But what were the women behind the authorial voices really li. k e ? In (this book), award-winning author Charlotte Gray breathes life into two remarkable and fascinating characters and brings us a clear picture of life in the backwoods and clearings of Upper Canada." CHIEF ENGINEER: LIFE OF A NATION BUILDER - SANFORD FLEMING
Dundurn, Toronto, 1993.. 191 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550021958 B&w photographs. "(T)he story of one of the most creative, adventurous, and yet too-often overlooked giants of the Industrial Age - Canada's Sandford Fleming. His influence. spanned the North American continent and beyond. As chief engineer of the Intercolonial and Canadian Pacific railways, he shaped and steered the greatest engineering challenge of his day: the laying of the ribbons of railway steel that bound toge. t her a fledgling country. He can be credited as well with the telegraph cables that began to criss-cross the globe. Few are aware that it was Fleming who gave us the system of universal time. He also designed the first Canadian adhesive postage . st amp, which was issued in 1851. Sandford Fleming's triumphs are all the greater considering the natural and human adversities obstructing every step of his way. Jealousies, back-stabbing, pork-barrel politics, and bureaucratic ineptitude were as. in trinsic to mega-projects then as they are now. Fleming's life story constitutes a compelling and universal drama." Previous owner's name/date in ink on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has corner crease on front flap. Equally interesting is the story of the development of the means of transport - canoes, bateaux, sailing-ships, steamshi. p s , stage-coaches, railway cars....(Guillet) draws on contemporary letters, diaries, newspapers, and periodicals, in order to vividly describe conditions of travel at various periods, and the book is abundantly illustrated with authentic portraits. , ph otographs, and drawings." MURDER AMONG GENTLEMEN: A HISTORY OF DUELLING IN CANADA
Robin Brass, Toronto, 1999.. 198 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. ISBN 1896941095 B&w illustrations. "The formal duel, with its elaborate ritual and code of conduct, was once considered the 'honourable' way for self-styled gentlemen to settle disputes involving character and . integrity. The law made no special provisions for duelling - the winner in a fatal contest was a murderer. But the prevailling sentiment that a duel was 'fair', and the fact that upper-crust combatants in the thinly populated 19th-century Canada w. ere well-connected with the judiciary, meant that duellists usually escaped with little or no punishment. What is surprising is that so many came from the ranks of those whose job it was to uphold the law - lawyers, judges and politicians, includ. i n g at least two future Fathers of Confederation and several chief justices. Hugh Halliday not only describes some of the most interesting duels that took place in Canada but looks at duelling in light of our human tendency to ritualize conflicts. w it h codes of acceptable and unacceptable practice. He also examines the steps that often led to a duel, including the public 'posting' of allegations, or insults, that was frequently a part of the process." Appendix: The Irish Duelling Code. . Hind, Henry Youle. Introduction to the new edition by Roy St. George Stubbs

NARRATIVE OF THE CANADIAN RED RIVER EXPLORING EXPEDITION OF 1857 AND OF THE ASSINNIBOINE AND SASKATCHEWAN EXPLORING EXPEDITION OF 1858. TWO VOLUMES IN ONE
Charles E. Tuttle, Rutland, Vermont, 1971, new edition.. 494 pp + 472 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover (bright red cloth with black title block and gold lettering on spine), in dust jacket. ISBN 0804810095 Color plates, b&w engravings, maps (some fold-out) - collated. "As late as 1857, the vast territory. of the Canadian northwest was unknown to all but a handful of fur traders. Yet the determination of the Hudson's Bay Company to maintain its enormous fur preserve was being challenged by the persistant advance of settlement. Anticipating the t. e r m ination of the Company's license in 1859 and curious about the suitability of the territory for general settlement, both the Imperial and the Canadian governments commissioned expeditions in 1857 to explore and report on the area. An Irish-bo. rn a rm y officer, Captain John Palliser, headed the British expedition; the moving spirit of the Canadian party was Henry Youle Hind. Hind's energy and zeal for the project lead his expedition on a thorough exploration of the Red River and later,. of th e A ssiniboine and Saskatchewan Rivers as well. First hand observation of the success of even limited farming in these areas convinced Hind that the prairies were capable of absorbing many thousands of settlers and of providing them with a . good liv ing. He wrote enthusiastically of the potentialities of western agriculture, envisaging a transportation system, either wagon road or railroad, from Lake of the Woods to the Rockies that would enjoy the advantage of being fed by an agric. ultur al po pulat ion from one extremity to the other. Substantail parts of this work made their first appearance as parliamentary papers in 1857. Hind's optimistic reports outweighed the less enthusiastic findings of Palliser and ultimately influ. enced the Im perial government to refuse the renewal of the Hudson's Bay Company's license two years later. Hind's 'Narrative', factual and objective, yet enlivened by incidents of personal experience, is foremost a document of extraordinary visio. n and foresig ht and remains today a minor classic." "Montreal, Canada, was the sleigh center of the world in the 1920s and 1930s. No other city with so much snow was s. o wealthy or so dependent on sleighs for its daily life. Nowhere else could such variety and ingenuity in sleighmaking be found. Except for the sighseeing sleighs with their fur rugs and shiny paint - the only ones that exist today - none of thes. e sleighs was used for pleasure. But what pleasurable sights and sounds they presented!....Here then are the authentic sleights that Carlo Italiano watched, stole rides on and drew as a child. Borrowing from his sketchbooks and many happy memorie. s, he has created a unique book: a work of art, an invaluable historical record and a memoir of a gentler past when the only street noises were shouts and sleighbells." In 1631, Captain James sailed from Bristol to discover the north-west passage. This volume, written at the request of King Charles I, is his account. of that expedition. It is a day-to-day record of an incredible journey marked by human suffering and human courage. Ice and fog were constant enemies, until at last the ship was halted in southern James Bay. For eight months, the crew clun. g t o l ife on Danby's Island, a crude shelter protecting them feebly from the full fury of an arctic winter. Miraculously, working doggedly for two months, the men were able to free and repair their ship, and arrived back in Bristol on October 2. 2, 16 32 . Longman Canada, (Don Mills, Ontario, 1971), first edition.. 254 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "Down through the years John Diefenbaker exerted an almost unbelievable influence over his supporters, both those in the hustings and those close to him in the Conservative Party. . But when internal strife began to split the party ranks this great Canadian found himself without the support necessary to maintain leadership. The convention that toppled the Chief from leadership is history, but the inside story of the wran. g l i ngs, disunity and treachery that went on behind the scenes has never been told until now in all its messy, dirty detail. Only an intimate friend of John Diefenbaker's could tell it, and Dr. James Johnston, former national director of the Cons. er va ti ve Party, is the man to do it...As well as an inside look at party politics, 'The Party's Over' is a warm and confidential picture of a great Canadian whose dignity rose above the petty machinations of people who only a short time before ha. d b een pl edging their devotion. Dr. Johnston tells the story with the authority of one who was there, and his description of many national figures and their actions will shock the reader..."
