From Saratoga, in America's war of Independence, to Tsingtao in the Far East, where they gained a battle honour unique in the British Army. The Ist. Ba tt alion, over which the shadow of amalgamation now lies, has recently returned from an operational tour of Aden. "The East Yorkshire Regiment - the 15th - was one of the regiments formed by King James II to combat the seditious activities of his nephew, the Du. ke of Monmouth. Within a few decades they had added glory to their name and new battle honours to their colours - the campaigns of Marlborough gave them Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde and Malplaquet - while the siege and capture of Quebec in 1759. g ave the Regiment the distinction of wearing a rose on their badge on a background of black, in memory of the young General (Wolfe) who fell on the Heights of Abraham. The 15th spent the next few years in Martinique, Havannah, St. Lucia and Guada. l ou pe, those desperate campaigns in which disease accounted for more men than enemy action. Then came the Afghan War of 1879-1880 folowed by the war in South Africa, in which the Regiment's Mounted Infantry Company won great distinction. In the . Gr eat War the East Yorkshires saw some of the hardest and most bloody fighting on the Western Front, raising a total of 21 battalions and serving on all the main fronts. The Second War again saw the Regiment fighting in all the main theatres - Fr. anc e, N orth Africa, Sicily, Normandy, Burma - earning praise wherever they went. In name the East Yorkshires are, alas, no longer with us, but it is good to know that within the structure of the modern Army the spirit of the 'Snappers' is still l. urki ng." CRATER TO THE CREGGAN: A HISTORY OF THE ROYAL ANGLIAN REGIMENT 1964-1974
Leo Cooper, London, 1976, first edition.. 160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. ISBN 085052229 Color frontispiece, b&w photographs, maps, 'family tree'. "In the early 1960s a new concept for the organisation of the Infantry was devised - the voluntary formation of Large Regiments. This is. the story of the first: the Royal Anglian Regiment, with four regular battalions, formed from the seven county regiments of East Anglia and the East Midlands. These regiments, each with long and highly individual histories and traditions, made. a decision to unite, a step which required goodwill, tolerance, trust and determination to made the union succeed. In some quarters, the Large Regiment concept was a nail in the coffin of the treasured regimental system; to others, it was a means. of retaining the essential features of that system while withstanding the stresses of change in the Army as a whole. The Royal Anglians have had ten years in which to test their experiment, years of futher reductions in the Army, of training as a. i rpo r table and mechanized infantry, keeping the peace in distant garrisons, as United Nations troops, and above all the years of bullet and bomb in Aden and Ulster. This book describes how the dangers and difficulties of those years have welded . to geth er a new regiment of modern infantry, highly trained and professional yet still conscious of inherited traditions. Chiefly, it is a picture of the contemporary British infantryman, disciplined and brave in action, patient and cheerful in a. dve rsity , a new breed in many ways but with all the best qualities of his forefathers and, in a confused world, a figure of hope and reassurance." Leo Cooper, London, 1973, first edition.. 115 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850521386 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. Music for Regimental Slow March, Trot Past, Gallop Past. "Many people's visual image of the Royal Horse Artillery is probably confined to . the dazzling equestrian performances of the King's Troop which annually entrance schoolboys of all ages at the Royal Tournament. How many people pause to wonder why, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, there should be a King's Troop? How many stop. to consider why indeed there should have been a separate formation of mounted artillery in the British Army at all? Brigadier Bidwell answers these and most other questions about the Royal Horse Artillery, and as an experienced author, as editor. o f the Royal United Services Institute Journal and an ex-Horse Gunner himself he could hardly be better suited to his task. From their formation in 1793 to the present day the Royal Horse Artillery have had but one objective - to excel. They are. in deed a corps d'elite but a corps d'elite whose claim to distinction is based entirely on merit and, as Brigadier Bidwell shows, for nearly two hundred years they have rigidly adhered to their self imposed standard of excellence. He has paid wor. t hy tribute to a body of men whose name will shine forever in the annals of British military history." Music for Regimental Quick March (The Garb of Old Gaul), Bugle Charge, and Regimental Quick March for Pipes & Drums (Highland Laddie). "At Waterlo. o they charged the French shouting 'Scotland for ever!' and Sergeant Ewart captured the Eagle of the 45th French Regiment. As Napoleon exclaimed, 'Qu'ils sont terribles, ces chevaux gris', and he spoke from the heart: he was referring to the Roya. l Scots Greys. As it was at Waterloo, so it was at Balaclava where the Greys, as part of the Heavy Brigade, went through the Russians like a knife through butter; in South Africa, where they scattered the Boers like grass in the path of a scythe. . T h e grey horses gave way to tanks in 1941 but the spirit of Sergeant Ewart lived on in the Second World War, and in no 'Grey' more so than Lt.-Col. Geoffrey Keyes, posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his daring raid on Rommel's Headquarte. rs in North Africa. The story of the Royal Scots Greys - whether they are charging French, Russians or Germans as cavalry, or fighting in North Africa, Italy or North-West Europe in tanks - will stir the blood of every man who has ever soldiered a. nd man y civilians besides." THE OXFORDSHIRE AND BUCKINGHAMSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY (THE 43rd/52nd REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES
Leo Cooper, London, 1971, first edition.. 158 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520290 B&w photographs, reproductions, music to Regimental March. Errata sheet tipped in on half-title page. "Since their formation in the mid-eighteenth century the 43rd and 52nd Regim. ents of Foot have had a variety of changes in title, achieving in 1908 the name by which they will always be remembered, that of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, although the old cherished numbers, by which the regiments were kn. o w n before the Cardwell Reforms, have always b een unofficially used by the regular battalions. In 1803 they were the first regiments to become light infantry in Sir John Moore's Light Brigade, and achieved further fame in the Peninsular War as p. ar t of Craufurd's Light Division. Perhaps the 52 nd's most famous success was at Waterloo, when, under Sir John Colborne's skilful handling, they made the famous charge which carried the day for the allies. With customary skill and courage succee. din g generations in the Regiment lived up to their illustrious predecessors, particularly in the First and Second World Wars; their stand on the Somme in 1918 against the full weight of the German army, and their part in the glider-borne landings a. t D- Da y are only two examples of the fighting skill which has made this regiment famous. Together with the 60th Rifles and the Rifle Brigade they are now part of the Royal Green Jackets - indeed a happy issue out of the affliction of post war org. anisa tio n." ROYAL ENGINEERS. FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES
Leo Cooper, London, 1975, first edition.. 162 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850521971 B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "The Royal Engineers list no battle honours, for, as their two mottoes tell us, with justifiable pride, they are to be found not only 'Ubique. ' but also 'Quo Fas et Gloria Ducunt'. Wherever the Army is, there too will be found a detachment of Royal Engineers. They can also boast that wherever a gaggle of generals is, there too will be found a disproportionately high percentage of Roya. l Engineers. Indeed there have been times when they seemed almost to monopolize the military hierarchy. The Royal Engineers as we know them came into being in 1856 when officers and men of the Engineer arm of the Board of Ordnance were amalgamate. d i nto one Corps; but the history of military engineering in Britain can be traced back to the time of William the Conqueror. Colonel Boyd, himself a retired Royal Engineer, fills in the historical background and explains how the Corps has evolved. o ve r the years. Since the Sappers have been 'Everywhere' he has necessarily been obliged to undertake a delicate task of judicious selectivity. He has acquitted himself with honour and Royal Engineers past and present will have every reason to . fee l a s proud of this tribute to their Corps as they are of the Corps itself." THE 10th ROYAL HUSSARS (PRINCE OF WALES'S OWN). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES
Leo Cooper, London, 1969, first edition.. 137 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Brigadier Humphrey Gore, who raised the 10th Dragoons in 1715, and General Sir David Dawney, Colonel in 1969, each had a son in the regiment, as also did many of t. he Colonels between them, including King Edward VII, for such close family relationships at all levels were a feature in the Tenth, with the same names appearing generation after generation. Hence in a very intimate way the regiment has always be. e n 'Proud of Their Man'. The Tenth has also always been notable for the Cavalry Spirit, that elusive quality, which has nothing to do with horses, implying light-hearted dash and daring, pride in discipline combined with independence of mind and . ju dg ement, the ability to assess odds quickly and take instant and correct decisions, enduring courage and leadership. It was noticeable before Warburg in 1760 in Major Davenport's letters. It was there before they became the Prince of Wales's O. wn Hus sars and the smartest regiment in the British Army. It was there at Waterloo, when they led the decisive charge of the day, and right down through the years and the campaigns it has always been evident. Whether in introducing polo to Englan. d, or d eveloping new tactics in battle, the Tenth was always in the lead. In the Boer War, when they exchanged gay uniforms for khaki, in the 14-18 War, when they fought amost entirely dismounted, in the 39-45 War, when they had converted to tanks. , a nd th rough every change of role since, these qualities remained unaltered, epitomised in the regimental saying 'Once a Tenth Hussar, always a Tenth Hussar', and in their pride as 'The Shiners', outshining all others." "In few regiments of British Cavalry were the officers more gallant and debonair than in the 7th Huss. ars, and during their early days they were nicknamed 'The Saucy Seventh'. But beneath this glittering exterior the Seventh hid a cold, professional efficiency, as they showed at Dettingen and Warburg, at Waterloo, in the Indian Mutiny, and again . i n the South African War. Like other British cavalry regiments, they put a brave face on the transition from horses to armour, and between 1939 and 1945 they wre the only British cavalry regiment to fight all three of the King's enemies: in their. t an ks they 'volleyed and thundered' against Italians in North Africa, Japanese in Burma and Germans in Italy with the same dashing elan that they had displayed against the French in the Peninsular war, Indian mutineers at Lucknow and Boers in Sou. th Afr ica. This is the story of a great regiment, inspiringly told by a writer who breathes the panache of the old cavalry into every page. It will be read at a sitting by any cavalryman, past or present, and by anyone else - soldier and layman a. lik e - who can be stirred by deeds of daring, duty and discipline." "The first tank lumbered into action through the mud of Flanders in 1916. Why were these 'Hus. h-Hush' machines needed, how were they evolved and the crews chosen and trained? Why were these monstrous machines called tanks and who was 'My Boy Willie'? This study of the Royal Tank Regiment provides the answers. You can read how General El. l e s chose his personal tank and the Corps colours of brown, red and green - through the mud and blood to the green fields beyond - and why the church bells were rung for Cambrai; the story of Captain Wain's VC and of many other tank actions in the. G re at War. After 1918 the Tank Corps did its share of policing in Russia, Iraq, China, Palestine and India, but the real future of the tank was decided during the critical years of the early '20s when Fuller and Liddell Hart, in decisive militar. y e ssa ys, pointed out the choice open to the Army: maintain the horse or mechanize, and those who backed the horses did not give in easily....The Blitzkrieg completely vindicated the prophets who struggled for the 'new' weapon and the 'tank idea' . of h igh speed mobile warfare. The tank had finally arrived and the author tells of the many actions of the last war from France in 1940, Greece and Crete in 1941, to Burma, Italy, France and Germany and the Western Desert....The 'Tanks' were in Ko. rea, Suez , Aden, Borneo and Cyprus - and until recently in Berlin. The RTR is now reduced to four regiments; the same number of units as when the 'Tanks' began. In this book the author, who served for over twenty years as a tank-troop sergeant, t. akes a ref reshing look at his former Regiment. His theme is the joy and comradeship of the vehicle crews, that unique band who wear a famous black beret and a cloth tank arm badge. For counterpoint he skilfully weaves into the pattern the story o. f the devel opment of armoured fighting and the effect that this has had on warfare throughout the world." Wherever the British Army were, the Corps made sure that its supplies, ammunition, petrol and every item of military equipment needed by. t roops in the combat line arrived in time, at the right place and in the right quantity. Although The Household Division is an adminstrative rather than a fighting formation an. d a lthough The Guards are most visible today for their central part in London's spectacular occasions of military and State pageantry, the Regiments are first and foremost professional soldiers, ready to exchange their ceremonial uniforms for comb. at fa tigues at short notice - as they proved most recently in the Falklands and Gulf Wars. Both aspects of their unique character are fully covered in the more than 120 superb colour photos specially taken for this book by a respected military ph. oto g rap her and author."
