"For scholars of British diplomacy and international affairs, the records of the Foreign Office are an indispensible source. But the range of information . and the sheer size of the records can be daunting to the first time user and to the increasing numbers of genealogists who attempt to trace individuals in the files of the diplomatic and consular correspondence. This book provides an introduction t. o the records in all their variety and suggests appropriate classes to start with. It also examines the state papers foreign, the records of foreign policy which pre-date the modern Foreign Office records. These are more closely related to the l. a t er papers than the dividing date of 1782 would suggest. This book also gives the would-be researcher practical guidance in using the registry systems created by the Foreign Office in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to locate surviving p. ap er s today." OXFORDSHIRE. THE COUNTY BOOKS SERIES
Robert Hale, London, n.d.. 276 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, fold-out map at rear. "For all the beauty and variety which it offers, Oxfordshire has been always overshadowed by the fame of its county town; visitors speed along the great ro. ads which lead to 'the dreaming city', ignorant alike of the lovely lost stone villages of the north and the remote valleys hidden among the beechwoods of the south-west. Everyone knows the Thames, but Oxfordshire has other rivers: 'gentle' Evenl. o d e, sparkling Windrush, reedy Thame. The towers of Oxford are world-famous, but the county has Norman churches by the dozen and, though her castles are fallen, a wealth of old manor houses and ancient farmsteads, exquisitely grouped. In this bo. ok t he author, born and bred in Oxford, has endeavoured to recapture the atmosphere of lost splendour which pervades the shire, to be wandered through and dreamed in rather than methodically toured." Aidan Ellis, Henley-on-Thames, 1992, first edition.. 150 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0856282081 Map endpapers, b&w plates. "....an explanatory and demythologising account of how Kenwood, one of Britain's most famous open spaces, was saved for the public some seventy years ag. o. In this it corrects many accepted ideas about a great green issue. As research proceeded the personalities underlying the six-year conflict came to life. Beginning with the great Lord Chief Justice Mansfield who created and loved the estate. , i ts history and estate policy is traced to the struggle between his aristocratic descendant and the Lancashire soap millionaire, Arthur Crosfield, with his passion for sport and open spaces. Many unlikely figures enter the story: Domini Crosfie. ld , A rthur's Greek wife and tennis champion; Venizelos, the Greek political hero; Arthur Balfour and David Lloyd George; but above all a conflict between artisocratic confidence and industrial conscience, and the paradox of a townsman trying to s. ave g ree n space against a countryman who wanted to build. The last minute and decisive intervention of Lord Iveagh is also put into its context in a dramatic, and in places tragic, piece of social history." Very minor edge soiling. Pencorp, (London), [1991].. 200 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and color illustrations. "The story of Slough Estates is the unlikely tale of a group of businessmen who bought up the entire surplus stock of British army vehicles used in World War One. and ended up as a powerful force in the nation's property development industry...(It) is also the story of a company that made a town. With a community of just 15,000 in 1918, the town of Slough today boasts a prosperous population of almost 10. 0 , 0 00 with a density inextricably linked to a host which takes an extraordinary interest in its community welfare...The company could not have grown without the patronage of a good number of businesses down the years, many of which started their . ow n co rporate stories on the estate. Robert Hale, London, 1951, first edition.. 308 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, fold-out map at rear. "Here is a detailed description of the islands with their headlands, skerries, tide-streams and lonely tarns; the inhabitants are more intimately and accur. ately analysed and depicted than ever before. The individuality of the Shetlander is well-known; here that individuality is explained. The saga of the race's endurance and successful efforts throughout the ages to wrest a livelihood from the oce. a n occupies a fair part of the book, while misconceptions of the Southron regarding the isles are so firmly exposed that the book will alter radically the existing ideas of both English and Scots about the islands and their inhabitants. Space has. b ee n devoted to legend and folk-lore, and philologists will find much of interest in the chapters treating of the dialect, which, the author claims, still contains the purest survivals in the British Isles of old Norn and Anglo-Saxon tongues. An. d t hro ughout there is the rough of the sea, playing its part in the lives of the Shetlander, from the days when Leif the Lucky sailed past Furthurstrander to the times of the Altmark and the Hood. The ornithologist will have especial pleasure in . the fine photographs of sea bird life." "This book aims at giving a historical and literary background to the more rural regions of the county, while keeping the topography clear. Takin. g Guildford for centre, it traverses Surrey in a series of walks along the principal highways and fieldpaths. The towns are dealt with in some detail and all the villages of importance described. The book brings out the beauty of the countryside. , for Surrey contains some of the most attractive country in the South of England. It also gives some account of the stories of the leading Surrey families and of the vicissitudes of the more notable houses and manors. In fact, its object is to p. ro v ide just that additional information which is not to be found in the guide-books and cannot be got together except from a number of scattered sources, yet which is so often sought for in vain by the resident or tourist who takes an intelligent . int er est in the country, since he knows it is essential to give life to its past." A few foxing marks at top edge of rear endpapers, light browning to edges of textblock - a few tiny foxing marks on top. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge we. ar/w rin kling, light browning - dark on spine and flap-folds/top edge, large tear on front hinge with crease archivally taped, several tiny chips and tears. LONDON: THE NORTHERN REACHES. THE COUNTY BOOK SERIES
Robert Hale, London, 1951, first edition.. 268 pp, 8vo (8 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, fold-out map at rear. "The area which is the subject of this book is one of great variety and contrast. From Highgate Woods and Hampstead Heath the land slopes away to busy and conge. sted Camden Town; in Somers Town vast building schemes are carried out beside quiet old squares; historic houses stand near to new and prosperous residential quarters. There is an astonishing variety of institutions, from the Zoo and Holloway an. d P entonville prisons to University colleges and other places of learning and research, from the Caledonian Market to the ancient foundation of Queen Matilda. Over the whole scene hangs the atmosphere both of accomplished and pending change. The. g r ea t railway companies, four of whose termini profoundly affect the life of parts of the area, are nationalised; the well-run private house, once the hall mark of the Northern Heights, is giving way to blocks of flats. Mr Colville describes th. is ch ang ing scene and its implications in an objective and impartial manner. Although the time is the present, the past is used to explain developments and tendancies, and a clear picture of an area in transition appears." CAMDEN'S BRITANNIA: KENT. FROM THE EDITION OF 1789 BY RICHARD GOUGH
Hutchinson, London, 1977.. 96 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0091252407 B&w reproductions, double-page map. "William Camden provided in his 'Britannia' a historical and topographical survey, county by county, of England - and to a lesser extent -. of Scotland and Ireland. Since he travelled the country at the vital period when the monasteries had only just been dissolved and before the destruction of ancient monuments in the Civil War and later centuries, his book remains a primary sourc. e o f great value. Yet, to be restored to its full usefulness as a tool for the modern archaeologist, historian and topographer, it requires comprehensive annotation in the light of subsequent research. This immense task has been undertaken by Dr. G o rd on Copley, who has himself an enviable reputation in all three of these allied fields. He has collected and collated information from any sources, and personally travelled thousands of miles to visit the sites mentioned by Camden as they ca. n b e see n today. This opening volume of a series intended to cover the same ground described by the Tudor historian shows how much, despite the destruction of time and the vandalism of the developer, survives of our historic heritage. Not the le. ast of its attractions is the rich turn of phrase which makes the notes a joy to read, and rivals the quality of Gough's English verion of Camden's original Latin." A PROSPECT OF ASHRIDGE
Phillimore, London, 1980.. 262 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850333601 Colour and b&w plates. "Founded as the College of Bonhommes, an order of Augustinian canons, in 1283, Ashridge is again a College today, housing the world-renowned Management Co. llege, so that after 700 years the wheel has turned full circle. After the monastic period, Henry VIII used Ashridge as an occasional residence for his children, when it provided a backcloth to the uncertainties of their upbringing. The property. p assed to the Princess Elizabeth at her father's death and during Mary's reign must have been the scene of both drama and danger. After its period as a royal residence the Egerton family (Earls and Dukes of Bridgewater) lived at Ashridge for seve. r al generations, among them Sir Thomas, Lord Chancellor to James I, the 3rd Duke, known as 'the Canal Duke', and the 7th Earl, who replaced the crumbling monastic buildings with the present fabric. The latter's controversial will led to the estate. p ass ing to the earls Brownlow. Later, under the 3rd Earl and his beautiful Countess, Adelaide, Ashridge achieved an elegance of great distinction. After more than three centuries as a home, the estate was sold in the 1920s and became an educati. ona l fo undation, first as Bonar Law College and then as the present Management College. This vivid and readable account is the first full-length study of the estate for over 150 years; and through his extensive use of contemporary records and som. e ne w arc hival material the author's prospect of Ashridge has become more than purely local history. Personalities are brought to life against the background of the building in a way that will appeal to a wide circle of readers. A piece of Chilt. ern h istory that often touches on national affairs, this work will be welcomed by many who know and use the Ashridge of today." A PROSPECT OF GRAY'S INN
Stevens & Sons, London, 1951, first edition.. 187 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. Presents "a view over the long and varied history of Gray's Inn from the Middle Ages till to-day. For the lover of London and the social historian, no less than for the lawyers, the f. ascination of the Inns of Court is irresistible. But this is more than a story of an Inn of Court and its members, or even of its six centuries of change in the shape of our legal system and the ways of the lawyers at study, at work and at play. . H ere Gray's Inn, starting as a manor house in the fields outside London, grows and changes as the city reaches out to enclose it. It feels the impact of religious change and civil war. Tudor, Stuart, Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian London grow . up around it. The bombs of two wars devastate it. Yet through every transformation its continuity is unbroken. And the Author demonstrates the essential part which that continuity plays in safeguarding the conception of freedom under the rule of. wa r." Scattered tiny light foxing marks throughout pages, foxing on endpapers and edges of textblock, dust soiling on top of textblock, small closed tear (archivally taped) at top of pages 113 to 130, light edge rubbing, faint discoloration on c. l oth on boards. "This detailed survey of the history and structure of inland navigation in the Greater London area includes all the major canals. and channels in use from the ninth century to the present day. It is the story of the rise and fall of the canal companies, the success and failure of each new throughroute to the docks and markets of the capital, of vision and enterprise, folly. a nd mismanagement, and above all, of the genius of brilliant engineers - men like Telford, Jessop, and Sir Christopher Wren. Beginning with the earliest navigations, the Fleet Canal and the River Lea, the survey covers in turn the Grand Junction . C an al and the picturesque Regents Canal; the Grand Surrey, the Croydon, the Isle of Dogs, and MacMurray's Canal, now closed; and the Kensington and Grosvenor Canals, still open through much changed. It discusses the mystery that surrounded the de. ve lop ment and demise of the Romford Canal; the uncertain future of the Dartford and Crayford Navigation; the redevelopment of the Royal Arsenal Canal - until recently confined within the heart of an MOD Restricted Area; and finally, the failure of. th e Ro yal Clarence Ship Canal, long planned for Royal Navy access to the Arsenal, and eventually never built." GIRLS GROWING UP IN LATE VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN ENGLAND
Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1981, first edition.. 224 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 071000821X "Girls learn about 'femininity' from childhood onwards, first through their relationships with the family, and later from their teachers and peers. Using sources which vary from. diaries to Inspector's reports, Carol Dyhouse studies the socialization of middle- and working-class girls in late-Victorian and early-Edwardian England. She traces the ways in which schooling at all social levels at this time tended to reinforc. e lessons in the sexual division of labour and patterns of authority between men and women, which girls had already learned at home. In Elementary Schools, social anxieties about 'National Efficiency', high infant-mortality figures and a declining. b i rth-rate helped to shape the curriculum offered to working-class girls through the period 1870-1920. The author then focuses on the emergence of a social psychology of adolescent girlhood in the early-twentieth century with its educational imp. lic at ions. Finally, she examines the relationship between feminism and girls' education through the period studied." Small faint area of soiling on fornt board. Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1988.. 184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297793934 B&w illustrations. "From 1740 to 1832, freshly buried corpses were dug up and surreptitiously hawked to surgeons and anatomists in London and Edinburgh to dissect for research and. teaching purposes. The resurrection trade brought together Fellows of the Royal Society and slum-dwelling criminals in an unholy alliance. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, the illicit trade had become one of London's most efficiently . o rganized departments of crime, with gang-leader Ben Crouch securing a virtual monopoly of delivery to half the teaching hospitals. In Scotland, several surgeons of great eminence loved the adventure of association with desperadoes and willingly ac. co mpanied them on their nocturnal excavations. Not surprisingly, there was great public consternation about the activities of the bodysnatchers, but it was only when Burke and Hare introduced murder as a means of acquiring 'subjects' that the auth. ori ties acted to eradicate the ghoulish practice. Martin Fido's book is an enthralling study of a strange byway of criminal low life. It provides the first full and accurate accounts of murderers Helen Torrence and Jean Waldie, Bishop and Head an. d El iza Ross. With sketches of the great surgeons who encouraged and sought to control the trade, 'Bodysnatchers' will interest many in the medical profession and social historians as well as devotees of the true crime genre."
