This is a real jewel of a book, one that collectors, watchmakers, jewelers will want to own . The great iron clocks of the last 13th Century were the most sophisticated pieces of machinery that had ever been made. From those first horological dinosaurs, 'accurate' to within a few hours a da y, to the latest mechanical movements, whose accuracy can be counted in fractions of a second, was a long uphill road.a few sudden advances were contributed by a handful of geniuses from France, Germ any, Italy, American, Japan & Britain. .The author, Assistant Curator of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers' collection, traces this road with infectious enthusiasm combined with a rare gift for explaining subtle technical matters in everyday language. After a chapter on sundials and other non-mechanical 'clocks' he takes the reader through the basic ingredients of a clock or watch, dealing with the vfarious types of escapement, striking and chiming mechanisms, calendarwork, etc. .,.A chapter for each of the great period of clock & watchmaking ecxplaines the significance of the mechanical advan ces, describes the evolution of styles to be seen in dials & cases. All of the great makers & innovatators are here: Huygens, Tompion, Mudge, the Harrisons, Le Roy, Breguet, etc. History of contrastin g technologies of America & Japan is followed by the final chapter on collectors AND collecting.
370 illustrations - 120 in FULL COLOR - you'll find many photos takes especially for this book of little known examples of the clock & watchmakers craft, a particular feature is the use of engravings from early horological books to illustrate technical points. Piaget: Watches and Wonders Since 1874
New York, New York, U.S.A.: Abbeville Press, Incorporated, 1996 In the small Swiss town of La Cote-aux-Fees in 1874 the Piaget family began making watchworks that quickly became the preferred movements of the most prestigious watchmakers in Europe. After the end of World War II, the Piaget company built a state-of-the-art factory and captured new markets, gaining more women clients by developing ultra-thin watches. Piaget became synonymous with luxury timepieces, and in the 1960s it leaped to international fame as the company opened a showroom in Geneva and presented products embellished with precious stones. The 1970s saw the debut of ultra-thin electronic mechanisms, and in the following decade clients commissioned Piaget to create the most precious watches in the world. In 1988 Piaget joined forces with Cartier and launched the great Piaget collections for the next millennium. This lavishly illustrated volume details the unique characteristics of Piaget movements, both wind-up and automatic; the crafting of quality watches by hand and by computerized machinery, in a melding of tradition and modernity; the creation of Piaget's trademark supple watchbands woven of gold wire; the quartz revolution; and the most recent and unique commissioned creations from the house of Piaget. SWATCH: A GUIDE FOR CONNOISSEURS AND COLLECTORS
Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada: Firefly Books, 1998 After the Beanie Baby mania, it will not surprise anyone to learn that fashion timepieces--Swatches, specifically--are now considered collector's items. Rather than just listing prices of Swatch watches, horologist Edwards presents a true catalog, which includes a brief history of Switzerland's watch industry pre-Swatch (when Japanese electronic ticktocks were devouring the market share), production and design, advertising and marketing, and information strictly for aficionados (yes, there is a Swatch club). The real surprises in the book, however, lie in the full-color directory of artists participating in watch design (Keith Haring, Yoko Ono, and Vasarely) and in the never-ending stream of other Swatch products (telephones, eyeglasses, even a car).. This impressive book also covers Westclox store displays, aftermarket automobile clocks, and weather instruments.
Many of the over 200 store displays pictured feature impressive Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and MidCentury Modern designs. In addition to Henry Dreyfuss, readers are introduced to lesser known designers such as Max Schlenker and Ellworth Danz. Westclox's expansion into overseas markets, acquisition of other companies such as the Sterling Clock Company, and merger with Seth Thomas to form General Time are all discussed. COMPASS AND CLOCK: DEFINING MOMENTS IN AMERICAN CULTURE
New York: Harry N. Abrams, 1999 As a professor at Princeton University, visiting curator at the Metropolitan Museum, and former deputy director of the National Gallery, John Wilmerding has established himself as a preeminent scholar of American art history. In his current work, Compass and Clock: Defining Moments in American Culture, Wilmerding steps beyond the parameters of the strictly art-historical and offers a fresh perspective on American intellectual history. Compass and Clock focuses on three turning points in American history, the years around 1800, 1850, and 1900, and examines how their literary, architectural, and art-historical forces synergize and embody the mood of the expanding and maturing nation. Placing important works of literature, architecture, and visual arts in their cultural context, Wilmerding skillfully demonstrates how America expressed itself as it evolved as a nation in the 19th century. For example, by juxtaposing close readings of Melville</a's Moby Dick and Whitman's Leaves of Grass with discussion of formal and iconographical elements of Robert Mills's Washington Monument and the landscapes of Hugh Lane, he shows how each embodies the sense of expansiveness, self-confidence, and flourishing prosperity that defined America's self-image around 1850. Wilmerding proves himself equally comfortable and adept at literary examination and political analysis as he is at examination of visual arts and architecture. Extensive quotations from books and reproductions of paintings under analysis supplement the study. At the same time academically rigorous and conversational in tone, Compass and Clock provides important clues to the evolution of the U.S. as a nation and people. --Bertina Loeffler Sedlack From Library Journal Noted art historian Wilmerding has written a fascinating study of American culture by focusing on three pivotal periods--the beginning of the 19th century, the century's midpoint, and its close in 1900. Reviving the notion (less than fashionable in recent years) that there are such things as pinpointable historical turning points, Wilmerding takes these three moments as launch points for his engrossing and cross-disciplinary look at art, literature, architecture, and music. Weaving together commentary on artists, writers, and others, he both defines each moment and shows how it led to the next point in the century. Lavishly illustrated with examples of the art works discussed, as well as portraits of the writers. . Hardcover. As New Condition. 7 x 10". more information

MARBLE CLOCKS
Princes Risborough: Osprey Publishing, Limited, 1999 Call to mind the Victorian house and one instinctively sees the welcoming fire framed by its imposing mantelpiece. The mantelpiece would be enhanced by a range of eye-catching ornaments, with a proudly displayed mantel clock as the centrepiece. From the mid-19th century to the end of the Victorian era, the most popular mantel clock was the mass-produced French ''marble clock''. Even though these clocks came in a vast range of case styles, they were instantly recognisable. The stone-like case, usually black, was typically relieved with ornaments, bands and columns of coloured stone or metal, while the style of the case drew its artistic inspiration from contemporary architecture. So popular did the marble clock become that it was usual to find a number of them scattered throughout the rooms of the house. In the early twentieth century, the black marble cases gave way to Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles. Cases showed a new simplicity of line and used strongly marked and coloured marbles. For the collector, marble clocks offer a useful, active antique, of wide-ranging style and at an attractive price.
About the Author: Brian Oliver runs a horological shop in Hove specialising in old clock parts and clocks for restoration. Peter Wotton is by profession a chartered engineer but in recent years has expanded his interest in horology and written many articles on the subject.. Soft Cover.
