General Richardson joined the Army in 1926 as a cadet, and he went to India with the Royal Engineers in 1931, he retired as a general in 1971. He was present at many of the major turning points of the Second World War. Evacuated from Dunkirk, he was sent to the Middle East at the fall of Torbruk he was posted to Auchinleck's staff at the Eighth Army HQ as GSO I (plans).. When Auchinleck left he was taken over by Montgomery. He describes the difference between working for the two men. He was awarded the OBE for a success deception plan to do with Alamein. He remained with the Eight Army through the Battle of Mareth, for which he received the DSO, and saw action in North Africa, With the Americans he saw the Salerno landings, the fall of Naples and the Anzio beachhead.
