Archer, Jeffrey

Twelve Red Herrings
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Morrow/Avon, 1995. Reviewer: topdragon from US Air Force officer in Bosnia - The term "Master Storyteller" is perhaps overused but in this case, Jeffrey Archer earns the moniker. Each of these stories I read between other people's novels, in order to space them out. It is a testament to the quality of these stories that I found myself wanting to get past the particular novel I was reading so I could get to the next Archer short story. Some of these stories have twists and some have irony, but they all have that exceptional phrasing that I have come to expect from Mr. Archer. I am suprised at some of the reviews below, giving this book lower marks, but I think if you are looking for a well-told tale, this is the book for you.. Lt Spine lines/edge rubs/tight Clean. Cornwell, Patricia

Southern Cross
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Berkley Publishing Group, 1999. Amazon Review - In their first appearance (Hornet's Nest, 1997), Chief Judy Hammer, Deputy Virginia West, and reporter-turned-rookie-cop Andy Brazil battled a serial killer in Charlotte, North Carolina. Now, in Patricia Cornwell's Southern Cross, the trio are dispatched to Richmond, Virginia--via an NIJ (National Institute of Justice) grant--to quell the growing gang problem and modernize the beleaguered Richmond PD. They bring with them a sophisticated computer program for tracking criminal activity and a tried-and-true methodology for reforming Richmond's men and women in blue. Unfortunately, Hammer, Brazil, and West could not have been prepared for the resentment they would confront... or the bizarre cast of characters they would find upon their arrival: Lelia Ehrhart--wealthy (and nosey) chair of the Blue Ribbon Crime Commission--whose heavy European accent renders her English dangerously hilarious; Butner "Bubba" Flunk IV--tobacco industry worker, gun collector, and UFO aficionado; Smoke--the sociopathic leader of the Pikes gang; and Weed Gardener--14-year-old painter turned master graffiti artist. Unlike Cornwell's usual fare, Southern Cross is driven almost exclusively by an interest in these strange personalities and their surreal hometown, rather than in fast-paced thrills. The novel becomes a satire on city politics, Southern culture, the ever-tense relationship between the police and the public, and the struggles of the average man and woman with computer technology.. Gemma James is adjusting to professional and personal changes that include her eagerly sought promotion to the rank of inspector--and a future now intricately entwined with Duncan Kincaid. But her new responsibilities are put to the test when she is placed in charge of a particularly brutal homicide: The lovely young wife of a wealthy antiques dealer has been found murdered on fashionable Notting Hill. But this case sets off warning bells for Duncan: it’s far too similar to an unsolved murder in which an antiques dealer was killed in precisely the same way and when the escalating violence claims yet another victim, he and Gemma find themselves at increasing odds with each other--as two separate investigations become linked in the most startling of ways. Their hunt for a killer will traverse the teeming stalls of the city’s antiques markets to a decades-in-the-making vendetta of history and hatred that has been honed to a flawless, deadly point. Donaldson, D. J

New Orleans Requiem
Don Mills, ON, Canada: Harlequin Enterprises, Limited, 1995. From Publishers Weekly: - Lots of Louisiana color, pinpoint plotting and two highly likable characters who chase a cunning killer with a taste for games distinguish the latest case (after No Mardi Gras for the Dead ) for New Orleans Medical Examiner Andy Broussard and psychologist Kit Franklyn. During a forensic science convention in the Crescent City, accruing corpses feature clean cuts to the heart and missing eyelids; Scrabble tiles are found near each body. The extensive plotting ranges from the macabre details of the killings to the actions of a lithe, wise stripper and even a clue cut from a Where's Waldo book. Donaldson sets his sleuths on far-ranging leads, yet wastes little motion as he produces a smart, convincing solution that encompasses all the densely laid clues. There's plenty of atmosphere too. While the French Quarter offers its alluring blend of the historical and the colorfully lewd, Broussard wraps his sizable chops around seafood po' boy sandwiches, and Kit deals with assorted threats, desired and not, to her single life.. Bear Hug
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Simon & Schuster Audio, 1993. From Publishers Weekly - Doolittle ( Strangle Hold ) drops Boston PI Tom Bethany into a shark tank of S & L looters who gathered under deregulation and slipped through the federal (read Republican) net with the cash clenched in very sharp teeth. Bethany champions four Boston retirees who invested in Sunbanc, a failed Texas savings and loan run by Dr. Denton Somerville, who escaped retribution by dying. Brought up to speed on how the S & L rats operated by Washington contracts from his Carter campaign days, Bethany also learns that without a few hundred lawyers and investigators for as many trials, he has no chance of getting the duffers' money back--legally. Deciding to track the leftover loot anyway, the PI heads for Houston. Posing as a reporter, he interviews memorable locals, happy to spill their guts about the Doc and his widow, Billene, now grieving on her yacht off the coast of Maine with a muscular companion. When his cover is blown, Bethany barely escapes to the rough seas awaiting him in New England. Tension mounts as he closes in and Doolittle deals out some tricky, though not totally unexpected final surprises. A welcome sequel--Bethany is a Travis McGee for the '90s. New York, NY, U.S.A.: Dell Publishing Laurel Ed., 1989. From Publishers Weekly - Jill Smith returns to duty as a homicide detective in this exhilarating addition to the series set in chi-chi Berkeley, Calif. Killed by aconite slipped into his private stash of horseradish, Mitchell Biekma was in the kitchen of his wildly popular restaurant "Paradise" when he swallowed his lethally spiced soup. Smith interviews Laura, Biekma's wife, the chef and everyone else present at the crime scene, including a truculent dishwasher who knocks down the investigator and escapes, making himself the chief suspect. But there are others: a rival restaurateur and a neighbor who had tried unsuccessfully to limit the bistro's late hour, consequently producing an uproar from patrons. And there is, Smith discovers, a secret to learn from Earth Man, a hippie left over from the '60s, living on handouts provided by Laura to the rage of her stingy husband. This is an appealing mystery with tangy details on the Bay Area's changing environs and characters. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc. Looks unread/bright Clean/no Stamps. 50) Sherlock Holmes and the Case of Sabina Hall
Greenwood, L. B

Sherlock Holmes and the Case of Sabina Hall
New York: Pocket, 1989. From Publishers Weekly: - Greenwood's second borrowing from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tops her first, Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Raleigh Legacy. As narrated by Watson, this is a more plausible and twisty tale, set off by a note from Holmes's university friend, Aubrey Tyson, which takes Watson and the detective to Sabina Hall, the home of Tyson's elderly, ailing Uncle Silas Andrews. The nephew wants a doctor to check on the old man, and Watson obliges, accompanied by Holmes whose antennae correctly alert him to intrigue. The miser Andrews dies of poison, and so does his sister-in-law and heir, Bertha Garth. Not until a third death occurs does the sleuthing genius separate the guilty from the innocent. Among the suspects: a cheeky maid incongruously far from her Cockney neighborhood; ingenuous young Agnes Meredith, Garth's companion; a clergyman, visibly relieved when Garth dies; and Old Neb, whose lucrative business Andrews had closed, throwing the villagers on the dole. The source of the poison, thujone, from the savin juniper, plays an interesting part in the solution of the case.. Spinelines/stamp/edgerubs/tight. Mass Market Paperback. Good. more information
