Richmond Hill, ON, Canada: Distican, Incorporated, 1988. Reviewer: Andrew W - This third installment of the "King of Ys" saga is the most gripping yet, with the conflict between the King and the gods growing, with increasingly devesating results. The tension builds as we watch the King struggle to balance the demands of his god (Mithras) with those of the gods of Ys. The gods are demanding that he marry his daughter, which is forbidden by his religion. While the King struggles to preserve his kingdom, others are plotting his demise. Meanwhile, the Roman Empire is occupied by its own internal struggles, and the barbarians sense an opportunity to attack. Filled with the same rich historical detail as the first two books, this book is a wonderful mixture of history, legend, and fantasy.. Few Edge Rubs & Edge chips/nice Copy. Mass Market Paperback. A Darker Magic

New York, NY, U.S.A.: Morrow/Avon, 1989. From Publishers Weekly: This impressive first novel is pure, scary excitement. For classmates Emily and Craig and their teacher, genteel Miss Potts, summer begins routinely enough: Emily tends her rambunctious brother, Craig decides to look up a friend, and Miss Potts closes down the classroom. On one of the desks she finds a mysterious old playbill. Soon, all three are beset by frightening premonitions. Something dangerous, something connected with the past is about to happen. As tension builds, the characters' separate stories come together, seemingly forced by the evil designs of a strange magician who appeared in the town some 50 years before. Together or alone, they must resist him. No deeply embedded meanings are uncovered by the end; this is simply a well-told story of horror.. Tan Pgs/few spinelines/tight. Mass Market Paperback. The Wish List

Scranton, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.: Scholastic Paperbacks, 2004. From School Library Journal - Grade 7 Up-Meg, kicked out of her house by her stepfather after her mother dies, becomes a troublemaker. When she and her friend Belch attempt to rob Lowrie McCall, an elderly neighbor, a nearby gas tank inadvertently explodes and she finds herself in a tunnel, hurtling toward the beyond. Meanwhile, Saint Peter and Beelzebub argue over Meg's soul-she is not really a bad kid but neither is she a very good one. In order to decide her fate, they send her back to Earth, where she must try to patch things up with Lowrie. After a rough beginning, she and the dying man embark on a quest to help him right the mistakes that he made during his life. Their adventures are both humorous and poignant, as Lowrie confronts his regrets and Meg strives to attain salvation. Whether the events are set in Ireland or in a hereafter complete with computer technology, Colfer concocts a delightful novel that is written in a much lighter vein than his "Artemis Fowl" books (Hyperion). He brings together several unforgettable characters, including an irascible old man, a mouthy heroine, and a malevolent spirit that attempts to stop Meg from completing her mission. The interaction of the heavenly-and not so heavenly-beings adds an unexpected dimension to the novel. An entertaining and compelling read. Artemis Fowl
New York, New York, U.S.A.: Miramax Books, 2003. Twelve-year-old Artemis Fowl is the most ingenious criminal mastermind in history. With two trusty sidekicks in tow, he hatches a cunning plot to divest the fairyfolk of their pot of gold. Of course, he isn't foolish enough to believe in all that "gold at the end of the rainbow" nonsense. Rather, he knows that the only way to separate the little people from their stash is to kidnap one of them and wait for the ransom to arrive. But when the time comes to put his plan into action, he doesn't count on the appearance of the extrasmall, pointy-eared Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police Reconnaisance) Unit--and her senior officer, Commander Root, a man (sorry, elf) who will stop at nothing to get her back. Fantastic stuff from beginning to end, Artemis Fowl is a rip-roaring, 21st-century romp of the highest order. The author has let his imagination run riot by combining folklore, fantasy, and a fistful of high-tech funk in an outrageously devilish book that could well do for fairies what Harry Potter has done for wizardry. But be warned: this is no gentle frolic, so don't be fooled by the fairy subject matter. Instead, what we have here is well-written, sophisticated, rough 'n' tumble storytelling with enough high-octane attitude to make it a seriously cool read for anyone over the age of 10. --Susan Harrison, Amazon Book Review. The Arctic Incident
New York, New York, U.S.A.: Hyperion, 2004. (Artemis Fowl, Book 2) From School Library Journal - In this entertaining sequel, Artemis Fowl tries to rescue his father from Russian Mafiya gangsters. Here, the criminal mastermind teams up with Captain Holly, the same leprechaun officer whom he battled in the first book. He needs her fairy magic and technology to help with his mission, while she and her friends enlist the boy to aid them in preventing a goblin revolt. The action is brisk, with fiendish plots, ingenious escapes, and lively battle scenes. Though still diabolically clever, Artemis loses some of his edge as the story proceeds, and even commits a few selfless acts along the way. His own bafflement at these sentimental lapses is amusing, and he develops into a more likable figure. His unbridled greed and ambition were essential to his antihero appeal in the first book, and a gentler Artemis is not quite as engaging. Still, it's fun to see him run rings around a school counselor, and his verbal jousts with his fairy allies keep some of that spark alive. Many characters from the first book return, though none develop much beyond their basic personality traits. The satisfying conclusion resolves the fate of Artemis's father and sets the scene for future sequels. -Steven Engelfried, Beaverton City Library, OR Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.. New York, NY, U.S.A.: HarperCollins Publishers, 1969. Reviewer: M. Magner from Minnesota, USA There are things you learn in college about "how to teach," and then there are things you learn in life about teaching. Ms. Decker teaches us lessons, in teaching life. I encourage everyone to read this, but especially new teachers. Too often we think our lack of experience is a negative attribute, yet Ms. Decker has shown how vital it is for schools to have new teachers. Riverside, New Jersey, U.S.A.: Simon Spotlight Entertainment, 1999. Sabrina, The Teenage Witch #23 - Sabrina's Aunt Vesta drops by the Spellman household with a shocking announcement: After a whirlwind romance, Vesta has decided to try a life of marital bliss -- with a mortal! But Vesta hasn't told her fiancé that his future wife is a licensed witch. If he finds out her supernatural secret, he might get a major case of the pre-wedding jitters. So Sabrina gives her aunt a crash course on doing chores the mortal way, using both hands instead of the point of a finger. Meanwhile, Aunt Zelda and Aunt Hilda are planning the most normal nuptials ever -- they hope -- to fool the groom and his mortal friends, even though they doubt their impulsive sister will actually make it to the altar. But pretending to be mortal isn't Vesta's only problem. She's afraid that an old curse on the Spellman family will doom her to be unlucky in love. Now, Sabrina's on a quest to save true love -- but will a magic-less Aunt Vesta make it to her own honeymoon?. ISBN: 0671028189. Appears unread/clean/tight. Mass Market Paperback. Very Good. It All Began with Jane Eyre
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Dell Publishing Laurel Ed., 1981. Reviewer: Dana - It's about a girl named Franny Dillman who creates an interesting life based on teen problem books that her mother brings home for her. Franny's mother is concerned about Franny reading "adult" books in her closet by flashlight such as Jane Eyre. Franny feels as though she has a boring, tranquil life so to shake it up and make things more interesting, she imagines her life along the books she reads. She makes her life parallel to the plots and the people she goes to school with into characters out of Jane Eyre. Her mother, wanting to help Franny adjust properly with the real world and her imagination gives her teen appropriate books that just make matters worse, but the situations are hilarious!.
