All The Presidents Men Movie Tie in
Warner, 1976. Movie Tie In Reviewer: from New York, New York USA Time has not dulled the impact of "All the President's Men". It's been thirty years, now, since the thwarted break-in at the Watergate. Most of the higher-ups in President Nixon's administration have passed away, and subsequent generations reared on Iran-Contra and Whitewater may not even remember what the fuss was about. But from the very first page of this book, history becomes life and events rush forward to the inevitable conclusion that still seems impossible today. Woodward and Bernstein's reporting is the major thrust of the first half of "President's". We watch both reporters work late into the night, interviewing reluctant and/or anonymous witnesses in an attempt to find out just why the Watergate burglars had connections with the White House, and how far up the political chain of command those men were connected. Along the way, mistakes are made and a reputations are wrongfully derailed. But the story -- the crimes and the subsequent cover-ups may have indeed been directed by the President of the United States himself! -- takes on a life of its own, and Woodward and Bernstein become witness to the defining story of an era. Much of "All the President's Men" has passed into legend, especially the unrevealed identity of Woodward's executive branch contact known only as "Deep Throat". The Watergate players to this day still debate just who Deep Throat was -- John Dean seems to publish a book on the subject every five years. Time has proven most of the accusations correct -- for an interesting exercise, try comparing Woodward's and Bernstein's discoveries with the corresponding daily entries in "The Haldeman Diaries"). The book gives so few clues as to make the exercise nearly impossible, even to those of us who've read all there is to read about Watergate and Nixon. Was it John Dean? Alexander Haig? Perpetual Nixon apologist Bill Safire? The answer will be made known in my lifetime, but I would like to think sooner rather than later.. ISBN: 0446890936. Gently read/edgerubs/tanning pg/tite. The Road to Wellville

E Rutherford, New Jersey, U.S.A.: New Amer Library, 1994. From School Library Journal - This novel gives readers insight into the health attitudes and morals of the early 1900s. It's also a riot to read. Boyle points out the ease with which medicine was manufactured at the turn of the century, and the dangers of taking them. John Harvey Kellogg, founder of Kellogg cereals, is mercilessly portrayed as an unethical doctor who purposely misinformed his patients. He supported his outlandish claims with circus tricks that demonstrated the violent potential of eating meat. The man is also shown to have had a humanitarian side. He adopted over 52 children, many of whom went on to become successful doctors and lawyers. Another of the main characters, Will Lightbody, unwittingly becomes addicted to Sears's White Star Liquor Cure. He has a chronically upset stomach, and the tonic his physician prescribes has alcohol as the main ingredient. Will's wife, in a desperate attempt to cure his alcoholism, surreptitiously slips "the cure" into his evening coffee-the active ingredient being opium. And so the story continues.. ISBN: 0451183746. Clear and Present Danger

New York, NY, U.S.A.: Berkley Publishing Group, 1990. Amazon review At the end of the prologue to Clear and Present Danger, Clancy writes, "And so began something that had not quite begun and would not soon end, with many people in many places moving off in directions and on missions which they all mistakenly thought they understood. That was just as well. The future was too fearful for contemplation, and beyond the expected, illusory finish lines were things fated by the decisions made this morning--and, once decided, best unseen." In Clear and Present Danger nothing is as clear as it may seem. The president, unsatisfied with the success of his "war on drugs," decides that he wants some immediate success. But after John Clark's covert strike team is deployed to Colombia for Operation Showboat, the drug lords strike back taking several civilian casualties. The chief executive's polls plummet. He orders Ritter to terminate their unofficial plan and leave no traces. Jack Ryan, who has just been named CIA deputy director of intelligence is enraged when he discovers that has been left out of the loop of Colombian operations. Several of America's most highly trained soldiers are stranded in an unfinished mission that, according to all records, never existed. Ryan decides to get the men out. Ultimately, Clear and Present Danger is about good conscience, law, and politics, with Jack Ryan and CIA agent John Clark as its dual heroes. Ryan relentlessly pursues what he knows is right and legal, even if it means confronting the president of the United States. Clark is the perfect soldier, but a man who finally holds his men higher than the orders of any careless commander. ISBN: 0425122123. Spinelines/edgerubs/stamp/hinge Crease. Mass Market Paperback. New York, NY, U.S.A.: Ballantine Publishing Group, 1992. movie tie-in Amazon Review - If you saw the 1995 film adaptation of this Crichton thriller, somebody owes you an apology. While you're waiting for that to happen, try reading the vastly more intelligent novel on which the movie was based. The broad lines of the plot remain the same: A research team deep in the jungle disappears after a mysterious and grisly gorilla attack. A subsequent team, including a sign-language-speaking simian named Amy, follows the original team's tracks only to be subjected to more mysterious and grisly gorilla attacks. If you can look past the breathless treatment of '80s technology, like voice-recognition software and 256K RAM modules (the book was written in 1980), you'll find the same smart use of science and edge-of-your-seat suspense shared by Crichton's other work.. The World According to Garp
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Pocket, 1979. Book Description: This is the life and times of T. S. Garp, the bastard son of Jenny Fields--a feminist leader ahead of her times. This is the life and death of a famous mother and her almost-famous son; theirs is a world of sexual extremes--even of sexual assassinations. It is a novel rich with "lunacy and sorrow"; yet the dark, violent events of the story do not undermine a comedy both ribald and robust. In more than thirty languages, in more than forty countries--with more than ten million copies in print--this novel provides almost cheerful, even hilarious evidence of its famous last line: "In the world according to Garp, we are all terminal cases.". True Crime
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Dell Publishing Laurel Ed., 1997. True Crime is an edge-of-the-seat suspense novel that graphically portrays the final moments leading up to a condemned killer's appointment with the executioner. The plot is familiar but convincing: An inmate, Frank Beachum, denies any involvement in the murder of a young pregnant woman. His only chance for survival lies in the hands of a reporter, Steven Everett. From the very first page, however, veteran suspense writer Andrew Klavan does everything possible to make this journalist unlikable--he drinks too much, he's committed adultery. In fact, the incarcerated Beachum, who stands accused of a hideous crime, comes across as a much more decent person than Everett.. Spine lines/edge rubs/tight/clean. Mass Market Paperback. Don't Say a Word

New York, New York, U.S.A.: Forge, 2001. From Publishers Weekly - New York City psychiatrist Nathan Conrad possesses everything required for a good, normal life--a successful practice on Central Park West, an adoring wife and a lovely daughter. He also has a reputation for dealing with the hard cases that most of his uptown colleagues prefer to pass on: catatonics, schizophrenics, the criminally insane. In this taut, superbly plotted thriller, Klavan, an Edgar-winner also writing as Keith Peterson, interweaves Dr. Conrad's disparate worlds to riveting effect. Soon after he begins treating a young woman accused of a particularly brutal murder, Conrad receives a chilling phone call at home. Suddenly his safe private life becomes a nightmarish game board, with Sport and Maxwell, two vividly drawn psychopaths, key players in his terrifying ordeal. Maxwell smiles and hums when he hurts people; Sport finds this a handy behavior in an accomplice. And the reader, meanwhile, roots for Dr. Conrad all the way to this brisk novel's heart-stopping conclusion. Major ad/promo; movie rights optioned by Kopelson Productions/Warner.. ISBN: 0765341522. Dying Young

New York, NY, U.S.A.: Ballantine Books, 1991. From Library Journal Eager to escape her aimless existence and the tyranny of her mother's home, Hilary begins by answering an ad for a caretaker and ends by becoming the lover of the man who hired her. But this is no ordinary relationship, for brilliant young Victor--scion of a patrician Boston family that might have snubbed Hilary had they ever met her--has decided after years of fighting leukemia to die on his own terms. As the novel opens, Hilary is contemplating an affair with Gordon, attracted by his very normalcy. How she manages this affair while remaining fiercely loving and loyal to Victor is the gist of this touching, well-wrought story. The 25-year-old Leimbach offers some remarkably astute perceptions on death's power to confound our expectations and love's power to confound death as she moves toward an ending that is both satisfying and unexpected.. Apollo 13 : Lost Moon - Movie Tie-In
Richmond Hill, ON, Canada: Distican, Incorporated, 1995. In April 1970, during the glory days of the Apollo space program, NASA sent Navy Captain Jim Lovell and two other astronauts on America's fifth mission to the moon. Only fifty-five hours into the flight of Apollo 13, disaster struck: a mysterious explosion rocked the ship, and soon its oxygen and power began draining away. Written with all the color and drama of the best fiction, APOLLO 13 (previously published as Lost Moon) tells the full story of the moon shot that almost ended in catastrophe. Minutes after the explosion, the three astronauts are forced to abandon the main ship for the lunar module, a tiny craft designed to keep two men alive for just two days. As the hours tick away, the narrative shifts from the crippled spacecraft to Mission Control, from engineers searching desperately for a way to fix the ship to Lovell's wife and children praying for his safe return. The entire nation watches as one crisis after another is met and overcome. By the time the ship splashes down in the Pacific, we understand why the heroic effort to rescue Lovell and his crew is considered by many to be NASA's finest hour.. ISBN: 0671534645. Gently read .
