1) Know the Landscape : Monasteries
Aston, Michael

London: B.T. Batsford, 1993. One of a series designed for local historians and all lovers of Britain's heritage. The book examines the place of monasteries in the landscape - how they affected and were affected by the countryside in which they were built. The author explains how monasticism arrived and developed in Britain - growing from austere beginnings to rich and powerful estates. He looks at why abbeys and priories were sited where they were and at all aspects of their activities from estate management and farming policy to industrial and commercial operations in the countryside and towns. The book also examines the consequences of the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, when many monastic estates and buildings were bought by private owners and adapted for secular use. 176pp.. 2) Stained Glass Windows: Of Canterbury, New Zealand
Ciaran, Fiona

Dunedin, New Zealand: University of Otago Press, 1998. This book is the world's first scholarly account of any region's nineteenth and twentieth-century stained glass, and is written by one of the few specialists trained in the field. The author presents a comprehensive catalogue of the 711 ecclesiastical stained glass windows in Canterbury, many of which are of international significance. She shows the shift from imported to local work, the development of New Zealand imagery, and how stained glass windows can be powerful social indicators. She argues that stained glass in Canterbury not only represents the most important regional collection of windows in New Zealand, but that the exportation of nineteenth and twentieth-century stained glass from Britain is represented in microcosm in Canterbury, thus necessitating a reappraisal of the history of British stained glass. The book also presents much new information about British stained glass artists, and is of great relevance to any country with glass from Britain. 240pp. . ISBN: 1877133396. First Edition. Paperback. 5) Spirit of Chiapas the Expressive Art of the Roof Cross Tradition
Guess, Virginia Ann

Santa Fe: Museum of New Mexico Press, 2004. With elements of catalogue, guidebook, and historical summary, this richly illustrated book offers a comprehensive source of information for art historians, folk art enthusiasts, museum curators, and the casual traveller to Chiapas. The Mexican state of Chiapas and its historical connections to Guatemala during the colonial period, offers travellers an experience different from most states in Mexico. Here they see Indians and Ladinos living side by side following centuries-old traditions, each with their own interpretation of Catholicism, and a symbolic language that distinguishes their culture and customs. This book documents a fast-disappearing tradition of iron crosses as house blessings as collected by the late Frans Blom, now located at Na Bolom, the Museum and Cultural Centre established in 1960 in San Cristobal de Las Casas. By extending her purview from this collection to the more than two hundred extant crosses of iron, wood, and cement that are still visible on roofs of San Cristobal, Guess presents a wealth of information that traces the tradition from its origins, identifies stylistic variations that occur among these roof crosses, and provides interpretations of the symbols that adorn them. In a series of walking tours the author guides readers through the streets of the old barrios where the crosses still can be viewed. Interviews with homeowners and ironworkers provide explanations as to the importance of these talismans to those who make them and those who use them to bless their homes. 206pp.. ISBN: 0890134294. 6) Harris's Guide to Churches and Cathedrals : Discovering the Unique and Unusual in over 500 Churches and Cathedrals
Harris, Brian L

London: Ebury Press, 2006. The unique, the unusual, the rare - these are the features that form the criteria for selection in Brian Harris' wonderful guide to churches and cathedrals. Here is a man who, in the style of Pevsner, has travelled the length and breadth of England and Wales in his quest for the most fascinating churches and cathedrals, recording his visits in minute detail and creating a marvellous treasury of facts about our religious heritage. Each church comes with a list of key must-see features - whether it be the particularly beautiful fan-vaulted cloisters of Gloucester Cathedral, the tombstone carved by Eric Gill in the graveyard of St Mary and St Lawrence in Great Waltham, Essex, or the columns in the nave of St Mary Magdalene in Ickleton, Cambridgeshire, which date from the Saxon age and might have been used by the Romans. Alongside the gazetteer to 500 churches come amazing stories about every aspect of church architecture from bells and mazes, to maidens' garlands and stained glass sundials, vamping horns and wooden effigies. Fully illustrated throughout, this book will become a standard work of reference for anyone who loves visiting churches and wants to know more. 481pp.. ISBN: 0091912512. First Edition. Cloth. 8) Well Dressing
Naylor, Peter; Porter, Lindsey

Derbyshire: Landmark Publishing, 2002. By the end of the 18th century the custom of well dressing in Derbyshire was virtually extinct: only Tissington carried on the practice. It was, however, revived as a celebration of the introduction of piped water. Now many villages have adapted the custom, often reviving it after a lapse of many decades. Naylor, with additional material from Porter, has brought together the history of well dressing both within and beyond Derbyshire. The volume includes a list of villages known to have dressed wells and a detailed account of the well dressing process. In addition to some old drawings of dressed wells and some early black and white photographs, there are colour photographs of dressed wells and of ancient and more modern techniques of well dressing. 128pp. . 10) The Art of Stained Glass Church Windows in Northeast Pennsylvania
Rousseau, Richard

Scranton, PA, U.S.A.: University of Scranton Press, 2002. Beautiful stained glass windows were part of a church building wave in Northeastern Pennsylvania during the boom years of coal in the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early part of the twentieth centuries. Father Joseph McShane SJ, President of the University of Scranton, wanted to highlight and preserve this important heritage. To create a warm and welcoming environment in the University of Scranton's newly completed Brennan Hall, home of the Kania School of Management, he commissioned digital photographs of many of these windows. Large prints were made, mounted in large glass frames and placed on the walls of the five floors of Brennan Hall. This book celebrates the religious significance, artistic beauty, and regional importance of these windows by reproducing them in full colour. Dr. Virginia Raguin of Holy Cross College, a well-known stained glass scholar, gives them context with a general historical/artistic introduction to the book and briefer introductions to the eight churches involved. Maureen Brennan briefly summaries key historical and informative data for each window, including the many Tiffanys. These windows and this book are a tribute to the religious and artistic vigour of an important American region in its prime. 116pp.. ISBN: 1589660072. First Edition. Cloth.
