THE WORK OF MANY HANDS: CARD TABLES IN FEDERAL AMERICA 1790-1820
New Haven, CT: Yale University Art Gallery. very good, wraps (softcover). 1982. PB. 198pp. ISBN 0894670166 This extraordinary study of the regional characteristics of a single furniture form is a gratifying example of scientific methodology harnessed to serve the arts. Published to accompany an exhibition of the same name at the Yale University Art Gallery, the book is largely based on Benjamin A. Hewitt's ten-year computer study of the form, ornament, and construction of nearly 400 federal period card tables from three broad geographic areas and nine urban centers in the Eastern United States. The study is given breadth and texture by Gerald Ward's essay on early American card-playing and by Patricia Kane's chapter on the role of design and price books in standardizing card table manufacture; but the heart of the presentation is Hewitt's comprehensive statistical analysis. (from a book review in ART & ANTIQUES, July-August 1982). An uncommon and essential furniture reference. . more information

COLONIAL FURNITURE - THE SUPERB COLLECTION OF THE LATE HOWARD REIFSNYDER INCLUDING SIGNED PIECES BY PHILADELPHIA CABINETMAKERS
New York: American Art Association Inc. good+, blue buckram cloth (hardcover). 1929. HC. 275pp. Scarce catalogue of the April, 1929, landmark auction sale of the collection built over 30 years by Howard Reifsnyder and formerly contained in The Reifsnyder Residence; The Pennsylvania Museum; and, Mount Pleasant Mansion, Philadelphia. Items sold by the order of the Executors Hannah G. Reifsnyder and Corn Exchange National Bank and Trust Company, Philadelphia. Prices realized written in for each item in Red Ink. This auction set a record for the highest price paid for a piece of American furniture when Henry F. Dupont purchased Item 696 - "The Very Important Van Pelt Chippendale Carved Mahogany Highboy, Philadelphia circa 1770" for the sum of $44,000 (1929 pre-crash dollars!!!) for Winterthur. Lot 656 "Important Queen Anne Carved Fiddle-Back Side Chair, Philadelphia, circa 1730" sold for $9,000, and in January 2002 this same chair sold to a private collector at Christie's New York for $666,000, believed to be an auction record for American Queen Anne side chairs. The similar chair (Lot 655) sold for $38,500 at Sotheby's in June 1990. An unbelievable auction catalogue, and as important as the 1929 Girl Scouts Loan Exhibition catalogue. . more information
