Punch, Polichinelle and Pulcinella Miscellanous Punch Ups and Reflections
Dorset: Millbrook Press, 2007. The author describes his book as 'Miscellaneous Punch-ups and Reflections'. It completes a forty year study of the history of Mr Punch and consolidates Byrom's international vision of the four outstanding manifestations of the archetypal figure as represented in England, France, Italy and Russia. In particular it includes a new examination of Polichinelle, the French punch, both as a glove-puppet and as a marionette in the Parisian Fairs of the 18th century. This has been made possible with the recent publication by a French scholar of a study of the 'corpus theatral de Polichinelle' revealed in the "Soleinne Collection" of manuscripts that have lain buried in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris for over two hundred years. About one third of the present book consists of the best of the author's magazine articles and reviews - usually contentious but never dull. A complete English translation of two genuine 19th century Polichinelle glove-puppet texts with illustrations of the puppets are included as an Appendix.144pp.. ISBN: 9780955485206. First Edition. Carnival in Romans: Mayhem and Massacre in a French City
London, United Kingdom: Phoenix, 2003. The city of Romans, in what was once the province of Dauphine in southern France, was the scene each year of a colourful and animated Mardi gras carnival. In 1580, the winter festivities were especially lively; they degenerated into a bloody ambush. While costumed craftsmen and peasants mimed and danced their uprising in the streets, and notables and bourgeoisie hurried from banquets to balls in their ostentatious finery, Jean Serve-Paumier, master craftsman, draper, and leader of the popular party was assassinated and his friends and supporters beaten and pursued by the hired mob of Judge Antoine Guerin, leader of the most reactionary and inflexible part of the ruling party. More than a cruel incident, this particular Carnival night marked the intersection of an urban movement and even larger rural stirrings. Perhaps it even presaged the Revolution of 1789. Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie marshals a wealth of evidence and reveals the town of Romans as a microcosm of the political and religious antagonisms that were tearing through 16th-century France. First published in 1979. 434pp. . ISBN: 184212627X. Paperback. Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. HISTORY FRANCE ROMANS DAUPHINE 1580 16TH CENTURY RELIGIOUS WARS HUGUENOTS. more information

Henrietta Maria: The Intrepid Queen
London: HMSO, 1990. Henrietta Maria was only 15 when she left France to marry Chales I. For many of his subjects she was his evil genius, a self-willed, interfering Roman Catholic, capable of ruining them all. For Charles himself she was a delightful consort, as lively as she was unpredictable. Neither of them saw the growing troubles around them but when civil war erupted, Henrietta threw herself wholeheartedly into fighting for the royal cause. She travelled Holland in an attempt to pawn the Crown jewels and even marched at the head of her own army. Her heroic efforts and hair-raising voyages read like an adventure story in their own right. Following her success with "Queen of Scots" and "Bonnie Prince Charlie", Dr Marshall once again brings history to life for the general reader. She has vividly recreated the key personalities at the English and French courts, conveying the trauma of lives torn apart by the civil war. 147pp.. ISBN: 0112904793. First Edition. Paperback.
