Dear Diary / Liebes Tagebuch
Stuttgart: Edition Axel Menges, 2006. This title has a text in English and German. The narrowest building in Cologne is the office of the advertising agency rendel and spitz. Once a year, during the 'Passagen', the offsite programme of the international furniture fair in Cologne, the office is turned into an exhibition space: it serves as a stage for an installation of a chosen designer. In 2005 there was no exhibition. The accompanying book to the exhibition that never took place contained only empty pages. Just as in previous years, the book was sent out to designers, architects, artists, journalists and friends. One of the recipients then asked rendel and spitz whether he was supposed to fill the empty pages and sent the book back. An idea was born: each recipient was asked to lend his (used) book for the 2006 exhibition "Dear Diary / Liebes Tagebuch". The result is a collection of private notes, sketches, photographs, collages, and objects. The accompanying book shows a synopsis of the contributions, which in some cases are very personal. In addition to the book, there is a CD-ROM with the complete contents of each book that was contributed. . ISBN: 3936681090. First Edition. Cloth. New/New. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Viktor Schreckengost : American Davinci
Connecticut: Tide Mark Press, 2006. This survey of the work of Viktor Schreckengost - an artistic inventor, an American DaVinci - marks the centenary of his birth. A key figure in the first era of modern design and one of its last living leaders, Schreckengost's paintings, sculpture, pottery, and industrial designs, are now being exhibited at more than 100 museums around the United States. Throughout his long working career, Schreckengost strove to apply a creative philosophy that linked artistically dramatic form with an object's function. The result was design that was nearly always remarkable and very often revolutionary. He created the first cab-over-engine truck, the first modern mass-produced dinnerware, and the first economical pedal-cars for children. He designed stage sets and costumers, flashlights, printing presses, riding lawn mowers, electric fans, and bicycles. At the same time, his work in the fine arts flourished. He won awards for paintings and ceramic sculpture, placed pieces in museums, and won commissions for new sculptures. Somehow he also found time to establish the Industrial Design Department at the Cleveland Institute of Art, the first program of its kind in the U.S., where he helped teach a new generation of designers. This study of the life and work of Viktor Schreckengost includes more than 250 images of his art and design with an extensive text by historian Henry Adams. From the ceramic Jazz Bowl to the high speed, sixteen colour printing press designed for R.R. Donnelly, Schreckengost demonstrated style and innovation that have influenced the shapes of things Americans have used for more than two generations. 213pp.. ISBN: 9781594902208. First Edition. German Artists and Hitlers Mind: Avant-Garde Art in a Turbulent Era
Boston and Geneva : Editions Fabriart , 2007. Written in clear prose, Wayne Andersen's expansive text accounts for all of modern Germany's major artists - the Impressionists Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth, the Expressionists Edvard Munch, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Erich Heckel, and Max Pechstein, the post-World War I George Grosz, Otto Dix, and Rudolf Schlichter, and the less classifiable Max Beckmann, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Kathe Kollwitz, Oskar Kokoschka, and Frans Marc. Theatre and cabaret life are treated in equal measure to the visual arts, with rich coverage of Ibsen's Ghosts, Brecht's The Jungle of Cities, and the prototype of modern filmmaking, "The Cabinet of Dr Caligari".Andersen assigns his challenging lines of attack to radical issues that established in Germany the essential first wave of twentieth-century avant-garde art and culture. Insisting that German art is masculine and prone to violence, he formulates a compelling explanation for how artists and defensive art critics convert violence into art as a pretence to mirroring society. He associates Lustmord (sex-murder) imagery in German art, theatre, and cabaret entertainment with the sexuality of war. He sees Germania's primal barbarism in German painting infused with the rise of Germany's Nacktkultur (nudist cults). A desensitising nakedness replaces sublimated nudity. The innocent nakedness of youth offers an opportunity for cultural renewal and a symbol of physical power. 443pp.. ISBN: 0972557326. Cloth. As New/As New. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. The Spiral, the Hand and the Menorah : Museum of Jewish Art and History in Paris: the Visual Identity (Directions Ser., 2)
Mendrisio, Switzerland: Gabriele Capelli Editore Sagl, 1999. The Museum of Jewish Art and History opened in 1998 in the Marais quarter of Paris. Following the competition for the visual identity of the museum, the application of the graphic designer Philippe Apeloig was accepted, but at the same time the jury asked for a new concept. Philippe Apeloig imagined a different path, simpler and more obvious, but also less original: the menorah, the candelabrum with seven branches. And so he began to evaluate how sensitive the subject is, how strong the contradictions and the constraints are. This book retraces the development of his thoughts, his iconographic research and his sketches. . ISBN: 8887469016. Card Covers. Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Pamphlet. In "Santa Fe Fantasy", a brilliant author presents a pictorial essay that shows why "The City Different" has had such a powerful effect upon people of different times, races, and cultures, and why its allure persists, even more strongly, to the present day. A View of Delft: Vermeer Then and Now
London: Chatto & Windus, 2001. Spine of d/j slightly faded.Vermeer has always been considered the most elusive of great artists, but this book tracks him down in his home town. It takes the reader back to seventeenth-century Delft, in a piece of historical writing that does justice to its now timeless subject. Anthony Bailey makes use of the scholarly research that has accumulated in the last century, as well as recent findings, and then reaches beyond these facts to expose the hidden Vermeer. The result is a vivid, convincing portrait of the Protestant innkeeper's son who married a prosperous Catholic girl and had 15 children of whom 11 survived. Vermeer died relatively young and left fewer than 40 pictures. Many of these pictures are indeed masterpieces, and Anthony Bailey examines the scientific expertise which lies behind their calm mystery. He introduces us to Vermeer's colleagues and fellow-citizens, and charts his celebrity as it slowly spread out of Holland and encompassed the world. He examines Vermeer's effect on many creative and destructive people, including Proust and Hitler. A View of Delft is a highly original attempt to get at Vermeer's life and personality, by setting him imaginatively in the context of Delft, its culture and history. 272pp.. ISBN: 0701169133. Cloth. Thornton Dial : Images of the Tiger
Ne Y: Harry N Abrams Inc., 1993. In this publication, Thornton Dial's assemblages, as well as his watercolours and drawings, are presented in 128 reproductions - 122 in colour. Using a variety of materials - scrap metal, rope, carpeting, canvas, wood and paint - held together with industrial sealing compound, self-taught contemporary artist Thornton Dial creates powerful, richly textured narrative assemblages. His primary symbol is the tiger, with which he represents the African-American male, notably himself, encountering life. The text offers a multifaceted look at the artist's career. First, art critic Thomas McEvilley, widely known for his groundbreaking writings on post-Modernism, analyzes Dial's work as a watershed in the emergence of alternatives to Western art-historical conventions. Then, noted poet, playwright and essayist Amiri Baraka looks at the phenomenon of the African-American self-taught artist and the cultural tradition from which Dial emerges. Baraka also provides an interpretation of the artist's imagery. The illustrations are accompanied by extended captions that elucidate Dial's thoughts and working processes.160pp.. ISBN: 0810932172. Changing Dreams: A Generation of Oaxaca's Woodcarvers
Santa Fe: Museum of New Mexico Press, 2007. This book takes a generational look at the fast-changing world of the woodcarvers of Oaxaca, Mexico. These artisans became famous in the 1980s for their colourful novelty figures, a contemporary folk art that Shephard Barbash and Vicki Ragan documented in the book "Oaxacan Woodcarvers". Fourteen years later, beginning in 2004, Barbash and Ragan returned to Oaxaca and discovered many changes in the lives of the woodcarvers they had known. Barbash effectively presents their personal stories in narratives drawn from interviews accompanied by Ragan's arresting black-and-white photographs of the carvers and their lives today. A series of diptychs of the same people taken in 1989-90 and again fifteen years later are accompanied by extended essay-captions on the changing circumstances shaping their lives.Faced with a glut of carvings on the market, declining sales abroad, and an unsteady supply of tourists at home, a number of Oaxacan artisans put aside their craft to become mojados, or foreign workers, drawn by the economic opportunities north of the border. With eloquence and insight, the book puts a human face on bilateralism, a fancy term to denote divided souls. From the dusty villages of Oaxaca to the orchards of Oregon and the kitchens of Chicago, the carvers have joined millions of Mexicans who, unable to find good work or sustain their recent prosperity in their own country, have fled across the border: artisans and aliens. "Changing Dreams" is a moving story of change and survival, conveying the growing aspirations and changing dreams of a people struggling to catch up without leaving too much behind, whose creations we enjoy but whose lives we barely understand.. Grasmere: The Wordsworth Trust, 2006. "The Spooner Collection" of watercolours is one of the finest of its kind, featuring all the leading artists of the period 1750 - 1850. London: Tate Publishing, 2002. This volume is published to accompany an exhibition at Petworth House to mark the restoration of the Carved Room where J.M.W. Turner's paintings will be reinstated in their original positions in the panelling. Petworth House was a special place for Turner, both as the home of his great patron, Lord Egremont, and as the scene of many happy visits. Turner recorded the beauties of the great English house in over 100 gouache drawings and for the house itself he painted, among other things, four landscapes to hang in the Carved Room. This book celebrates Turner's relationship with Petworth and its owner through the reproduction of over 150 works, prefaced by thematic essays written by scholars from the National Trust and Tate. 208pp.. Walter Sickert and the Camden Town Group
Newton Abbot: David & Charles, 1992. Walter Sickert fascinated everyone, including himself. He was cosmopolitan, witty, intelligent, handsome and a chameleon in his changing moods and appearance. He was also the leader and mentor of the group of talented young painters who gathered around him in 1911 and became known as the Camden Town Group. This apparently transient and ostentatiously unsuccessful group of like minds produced between them some of the most attractive and important work of the 20th century. Taught by both Whistler and Degas, Sickert became a leading innovator in the artistic world, with a reputation that preceded him. Yet his private life remained as colourful as his work; husband to three women, he had numerous mistresses and a son whom he neglected. He moved in two opposing spheres of society - that of the respectable upper classes, where his patrons would be found, and among the less fortunate, of whom he painted actors, prostitutes and even a man suspected of being Jack the Ripper. This biography traces the life and artistic career of Sickert and of the other major members of the group - Spencer Gore, Harold Gilman, Charles Ginner, Robert Bevan, Lucien Pissaro and Malcom Drummond, each of whom has his own story and also brought something to, and took something from, the Camden Town Group. 96pp.. Exhibiting Mestizaje : Mexican (American) Museums in the Diaspora
Albuquerque, NM, U.S.A.: University of New Mexico Press, 2001. In this authoritative study, Davalos challenges the sometimes hidden, sometimes blatant assumptions that underlie the practice of creating museum exhibits, and asks what happens when people of Mexican (American) descent put themselves in command of the collection, display, and interpretation of their cultural products. Davalos pays particular attention to museum and cultural centres in major Mexican diaspora communities, including the Mexican Fine Arts Museum in Chicago and Galeria de la Raza in San Francisco. Throughout she critically examines Chicano, Mexican, Mestizo, and Mexican American subjectivities as they are expressed in curatorial decisions and practices, in educational materials and catalogue texts, and in the performances and other public events that accompany museum exhibits. That practice -- what Davalos calls 'exhibiting mestizaje' -- produces complex representations of Mexican (Americans). Davalos's analysis shows clearly that the value of mestizaje and diaspora lies in their ability to create a cultural poetics from fluidity and conflict. 264pp.. ISBN: 0826318991. First Edition. Santa Fe: Museum of New Mexico Press, 2003. For over three hundred years, the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe in her Mexican invocation has been celebrated in New Mexico. Miss Angel : The Art and World of Angelica Kauffman Eighteenth-Century Icon
London: Pimlico, 2006. A word was coined to describe the condition of people stricken with a new kind of fever when the Swiss-born artist Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807) came to London in 1766. 'The whole world', it was said, 'is Angelicamad.' One of the most successful women artists in history - a painter who possessed what her friend Goethe called an 'unbelievable' and 'massive' talent - Kauffman became the toast of Georgian England, captivating society with her portraits, mythological scenes and decorative compositions. She knew and painted poets, novelists and playwrights, collaborating with them and illustrating their work; her designs adorned the houses of the Grand Tourists she had met and painted in Italy; actors, statesmen, philosophers, kings and queen sat to her; and she was the force that launched a thousand engravings. Despite rumours of relationships with other artists (including Sir Joshua Reynolds), and an apparently bigamous and annulled first marriage to a pseudo Count, Kauffman was adopted by royalty in England and abroad as a model of social and artistic decorum. A profoundly learned artist, but one who is loved, above all, for her tender adaptations from classical antiquity and sentimental literature; a commercially successful celebrity, yet also a founding member of The Royal Academy of arts; the virginal creator of sexually ambivalent beings who was one of the hardest-headed businesswomen of her age, Kauffman's life and work is full of apparent contradictions explored in this first biography in over 80 years. 389pp.. ISBN: 9781844139316. Paperback. New/No d/j as Published. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. PAINTERS_EUROPE SWITZERLAND_BIOGRAPHY GREAT BRITAIN_SOCIAL LIFE ANGELICA KAUFFMAN ARTIST. more information
