18) The Rambler; A Periodical Paper, Published in 1750, 1751, 1752/The Idler

The Rambler; A Periodical Paper, Published in 1750, 1751, 1752/The Idler
London: Jones & Company, 1825. Original 3/4 brown leather over marbled boards in shades of brown and black. Leather is blindstamped with flowers at edges. Gilt lettering and decorations on spine. Leather section where title is printed is coloured black. Silk ribbon marker. Some corner and edgewear as one would expect in a volume of this age. Leather at hinges has begun to crack, but is holding. Occasional foxing, not affecting text. Newspaper article glued to front endpaper regarding a military transfer. Envelope glued inside back cover contains an 1829 newspaper clipping about Dr. Johnson. Old tape repair (3" at gutter) to back of title page of The Rambler. Pencilled "X"'s in margins of Table of Contents. The Rambler appeared twice a week, every Tuesday and Friday, from March 20, 1750 until March 14, 1752. It contained essays aimed at reforming the manners and morals of its readers. Topics included: "The folly of cards," "The uneasiness and disgust of female cowardice," "The cruelty of parental tyranny," " The effect of sudden riches upon the manners," etc. The Idler was a weekly essay (Saturday) written by Dr. Johnson for "The Universal Chronicle, or Weekly Gazette" from April 15, 1758 until April 5, 1760. Johnson's style was slightly different in The Idler essays: he continues his lectures on human life, but relates them to topics of the day. The Idler essays were often stolen and reprinted without credit in other newspapers and magazines, much to the chagrin of the Universal Chronicle's editors. The Rambler contains 351 pages, while The Idler has 111 pages. . 3/4 Leather on Marbled Board. Good Plus/No Jacket. Illus. by Engravings By Various Artists. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Periodical.
